On Half-Life 2

German gaming site Gamestar.de (thanks HalfLife.de) has an article up (translatable by Babel Fish) speculating that Valve plans on releasing Half-Life 2 by the end of this year. Supporting their theory that the game of the year sequel is more imminent than the lack of updates on its progress would indicate are hints they've uncovered in an NVIDIA conference call, quotes from an ATI press release, and a comment from Valve's own Robin Walker.

But Half-Life 2 is going to be "Game of The Year", and they're gonna get it from over 40 different gaming magazine publications just like last time...and it's gonna be for a damn good reason too.

This game has been in production since the FIRST Half-Life was RELEASED! They pretty much took ALL of the profit from the First Half-Life and threw it into Half-Life2...

Don't beleive me? Check this out:

I just get the feeling HL2 will be nothing more than a polished up version of HL with a different storyline.
Yes, I too have an overwhelming suspicion that Half Life 2 will be a sequel to Half Life.

That's about the funniest thing i've ever read.

Didn't Omikron start out as a "one block" project?

After 15 years of playing games, no i'm not 15, I think i've finaly learned to stop listening to the hype and just judge the final product for what it is. So many games promise so much but end up falling by the wayside. If HL2 ends up taking the HL universe to better and greater places then so be it. Yet if it ends up just being a big name to make bucks I won't be suprised either. Expect the worse, hope for the best?

I agree with Scottsman (post 97). Ever hear of Warren Spector's "One Block" idea? The game area would be very small, only a single city block. But all the dev time would be spent making EVERYTHING being able to be manipulated. You could walk into any room in any building in the block, and use any item. The game could be a shooter, a murder mystery, and online RPG,...who knows...the point being you would have TOTAL freedom.

Everything has NOT been done...this is only the beginning!

The fact of the matter is that "Everything has been done" in the FPS genre

There was a quote awhile back of a Patent Clerk who once said something to the effect of "Man has invented eveything there is to invent"

This was in 1890..

If you can't think of new innovations for the current crop of FPS's than you have, quite frankly, a sorely lacking imagination..

But even if there wasn't anything left to revolutionize, that would be a pretty piss-poor reason to NOT make a sequel.. SO long as it's fun, who the !@#$ cares? Why bother playing a game unless it's to have fun?

After the 2 main Valve guys got filthy rich, the smart one retired & is now sailing for the rest of his natural life. This is why Valve hasn’t been able to do TF2, can’t do CS2, & won’t finish HL2.

About 2 years ago I wrote an editorial for a website I worked for that stated as much. I made the audacious comment that, quote, "Half Life 2 will never happen, much in the same way Casablanca 2 or Gone with the wind 2 will never happen".

You see, you cannot improve upon a classic of that magnitude. Any articles you have read (Like this "German" one) telling you something to the contrary are not to be taken seriously. The fact of the matter is that "Everything has been done" in the FPS genre, and all they can do is re-create another Half-life game....only this time use a more powerful game Engine.

Is that what you want to see? Perhaps you do, heck, I would too...but I don't see Valve doing it.

HL2 would receive too much anti-hype...it would be destroyed by hardcore fans and passed over by casual fans who had never played the first one. Really though, FPS's like Deus Ex and System Shock 2 have already improved upon HL's original formula of "FPS on an epic scale" So don't hold your breath waiting for this.

What made HL great was it's impossibly large and well-designed levels, it's "boundary-free" level progression (Copied by the first Unreal game too) and it's imaginative enemies and neat plot twist halfway through......

Though it begs to be mentioned that the latest OXBM has an article that speaks about the strong possibility of HL2 being Console only.

Ohhh...that would be a riot.

Rajajuruman, I would recommend not speaking of things that you know nothing about..

FACT: Half-Life was ALWAYS planned to be a retail game, which is Valve LISCENSED the source code from id.. You don't spend several thousand dollars for the Quake engine to make a freebie mod.

FACT: Half-Life was first built on the ORIGINAL Quake engine.. Valve later took bits and pieces of the Quakeworld and Quake II source, but it was the first Quake engine that they started and did most of the work with. This is all ultimatly meaningless through, since Half-Life's engine was composed of about 70% of Valve's own code by the time it was released (And the number has jumped up even higher with some of the recent patches)

Half-life was only hyped as much as every other game in it's time, up until shortly before its released when game reviewers were able to play a near-finalized version. It was only then that the "best game ever" accolades started appearing.

Of course, in order for HL2 to be as revolutionary as Half-Life 1, they'll need to put in some revolutionary features. But they put some revolutionary ideas into the original Half-Life (The Skeletal animation system, the blended color lighting, lighting fast level load times and advanced AI to name some) I don't doubt its within their power to do repeat the event. Wether they WILL pull it off, I have no clue, but when I first heard of Half-Life I wouldn't have expected it to be nearly as successful as it was.

Now if Valve could just strangle Counter-Strike, I would be a happy man

I could care less how revolutionary HL2 is (i.e. open ended, trendy physics, etc.) Following a set line along a story is just fine as long as the story and presentation are interesting and well presented. I'd be very pleased if Valve shipped a sequel with solid single-player gameplay. Valve does not need to reinvent the genre again, just deliver a great game. I think if the original HL was done today with current visual tech, it still would be fun. I hope for two things: HL2 sticks to pure single-player, without too much team or squad yadda yadda. One of the components of the original that I loved was the lone-wolf-you-against-the-government player predicament. Two, that Valve draws generously from the rich "Black Mesa" universe.

Eh, the only reason FPS today have so many advanced features etc etc is BECAUSE of Half-Life. HL changed the whole fucking genre. And after Half Life was released, anything that didn't measure up in storytelling, scripting, or overall gameplay was knocked down with low reviews.

Maybe a few of you will remember that Half-Life was originally planned as a full conversion for Quake 2. Somehow, Valve was able to get their shit together in such a way as to attract Sierra for publishing rights. At that point, HL became much more hyped than it already was. And yes, I also feel that most of the hype was just that and did not reference any HUGE breakthroughs in the somewhat young genre of FPS. Okay, so the scripted parts were nice, and the AI wasnt half bad. Other than that, it was still running you down a straight rail the whole time.

Fast forward to now, when FPS games get a new face practically every week. If HL1 was released nowadays, even with enhanced graphics and stuff - it would not fare nearly as well as it did. So, if HL2 is going to be as "revolutionary" as the 1st one supposedly was, they are going to need to put some SERIOUSLY bad ass features in.

For one thing, I am tired of indestructable environments. Im not talking about a bottle or a table, but a whole damn building. If Soldner is able to pull it off well, and they have solid netcode - then they will surely rule the tactical fps scene for a while.

I really have a bad gut feeling about HL2, there's just something in my mind that makes me think that Valve was a one-trick pony.

Half-Life came along at the right time, when there was the tech to do some nifty stuff that could really 'wow' an audience, but the people that developed this tech were more concerned in the tech itself rather than the game that went with it, so HL had the perfect stomping grounds to be revolutionary.

But will HL2's entry be as warming? Given, there are still a LOT of things we have yet to touch in an FPS in terms of involvement, but I'm not convinced that we have the tech to do anything mindblowing at this point.

I just get the feeling HL2 will be nothing more than a polished up version of HL with a different storyline.
