speculating that Valve plans on releasing Half-Life 2 by the end of this year.
Supporting their theory that the game of the year sequel is more imminent than
the lack of updates on its progress would indicate are hints they've
uncovered in an NVIDIA conference call, quotes from an ATI press release, and a
comment from Valve's own Robin Walker.

Seriously... yeah, the story was cliche'd, but there aren't a lot of options if you're making a FPS. You need a hero, and lots of bad guys for him to shoot. You can't exactly make that out of romantic comedy.
HL wasn't anything revolutionary, but it did do a great job of presenting the story and drawing the player in. It's one of those games where I kept playing because I actually wanted to see what happened next. HL2 would be way cool, but I'll believe it when I see it in the stores.
