Out of the Blue

As a clever interim alternative to acquiring a late-season snow-blower, I am contemplating the alternative approach to snow removal represented by denial. I'm taking the clue from some of my smarter neighbors, who have figured out that if you shovel, you end up with thin layers of ice upon which folks can slip (as I did in my friend's driveway last week), but if you leave your walk unshoveled, it gets avoided altogether. This plan was actually prompted by the fact that my shovel now seems to be broken from this winter's festivities... when you scoop up a pile of snow, the blade of the shovel swivels and immediately re-dumps the pile. Sort of the snow equivalent of a dribble glass (maybe after I get a snow blower I can sell it as a novelty).

No kidding, I wiped out walking across a median to a blockbuster near me. Didn't see the ice.. feet just flew out from under me and I slammed down on my arm/side.. hurt like a bitch the next morning..

We've gotten a crapload of snow this year in the mid-hudson.

Exactly. I think it's best to shovel off the deep stuff but leave an inch or so of snow. There's nothing more slippery than a shoveled sidewalk with a little refrozen melted snow glazed to it. Walking on crunched down snow is pretty easy.

Of course I could be wrong... but really, what are the chances of that happening twice?

To me, the shovel sounds like the scoop on the herring-sandwich-eating-robot invented by the Meximegalon Institute for Slowly and Painfully Working Out the Stupendously Obvious, in one of the Hitch-Hiker's Guide books. Y'know, the scoop was angled so the robot could pick up the sandwich, then when it stood up, the sandwich fell out again, so it picked it up again...

BTW, I am trying to get the noisy ads pulled... bad enough they play sound, but to get the same noisy ad in more than one spot on the page so that it competes with itself is crazy.

Thank you. I've had to resort to something I hate doing. Can't wait to stop.

Whatever happened to roving bands of kids wanting to make a little money shoveling drives and walkways? I'd gladly shell out some money for that.

I've pondered the same question myself.. there are lots of kids around here too... guess they're all just lazy, spoiled or both?

at least 'round these parts, an unshoveled walk can result in a ticket from bylaw enforcement.

Not sure what the law is, but a couple of the neighbors don't really have sidewalks, so it's hard to picture how they could shovel the grass in front of their houses.

Anyway, I gave in and shoveled -- I'm not as good at being antisocial as I would like.

Vincent, those kids still roam my neighborhood. The going rate (swear ta God) is $30. I've paid more times than I'm willing to admit.

The problem with snowblowers is that you may only need it once a year, perhaps twice. The more logical solution would be to band together with a few neighbors and either buy a "community" snowblower or hire a service.

I still enjoy the shovel method, though, most of the time. Takes longer, but you get more exercise.

After reading that I'm still divided on the issue of if he should of been arrested or not.

According to statements given the police, a customer complained to Macy's security that Downs and his 31-year-old son, Roger, were arguing with a group of individuals, and "was afraid of what might happen."

It sounds to me like Downs (the T-shirt guy) wasn't following his own advice.

You know, I really should have mentioned this earlier in the season, but a good alternative to a snow-blower when you have the champagne powder we've typically been getting this year is a leaf blower. You end up looking like a walking snowman when all's said and done, but it really does a great job of quickly clearing the driveway/sidewalk.

And hey, it could be worse Stephen. I bought a (used) snowblower last summer, thinking I was all set for winter. When we had our first six inch snow here in NJ, it worked for one pass down the driveway - then broke. I didn't get around to getting it fixed quickly enough and ended up clearing the driveway in the Blizzard of 03, one heavy shovel full at a time.
