SWAT Urban Justice Delayed

10-David is reporting having confirmed with Sierra reports that SWAT: Urban Justice has been further delayed, and now the next installment in this series of tactical police games is not expected until 2004. They have also posted an update to their story, reporting the game will not be shown at this year's E3.

Looking at Raven Shield, I don't think the use of the Unreal engine would be a mistake for Urban Justice.

The Unreal engine is 4+ years old as well. And wasn't the whole point of the Takedown engine its superior handling of ballistics? I have yet to try Raven shield- downloaded the demo yesterday, haven't had the chance to try it yet. But I always was under the impression that Unreal engine is more arcade style than realism (like the Q3 engine is- which is why Return to Wolfenstein sucked).

That's the thing, though...the TakeDown engine was based on the SWAT 3 engine, which started development back in 1998. Based on some comments I've heard, when Sierra went to finalize the build of the game, they discovered it couldn't support the NPCs. Hence the whole engine was scrapped.

Looking at Raven Shield, I don't think the use of the Unreal engine would be a mistake for Urban Justice.

Hopefully they have decided that they made a poor choise when they scrapped the Takedown engine in favor of the Unreal engine, and will re-build the TD engine (or even use a new engine - Doom 3 perhaps)?

Although the reasons behind this delay remain officially unknown, I'm pretty sure it's because they've gone ahead and switched to the Unreal 3D engine (the same that's powering Raven Shield, or at least a similar version). There are two reasons to believe this: 1) the former executive producer plainly stated this switch had begun after he'd left, 2) the current developers have hinted that the screenshots on 10-David have exactly zero bearing on how they'll resemble in the final product.

It's also worth noting that about 50% of the development has left in the past year. That 50% represents some of the top talent, including a majority of the original SWAT 3 development team.

The further fact that Sierra has no intention to show UJ at E3 is disconcerting for fans because it only lessens the likelihood of the game being released in Q1 or Q2 of 2004. That means the game could actually not even reach completion till Q3/Q4 2004.

Not showing UJ on this years E3 almost makes me think they aren't happy with the graphics engine. Wich I can fully understand coz UJ didn't look that stunning to me as SWAT3 did when it came out. Hope they get it right though, they arcade thing they are making of it does not make me happy:(

What's the prob with the heart beat sensor OneNightStand ? Its an actual piece of 'real world' equipment (from the R6 books too)

With the mass exodus of key members of the design team i knew it could not bode well for the game but a delay till '04? Bleh!

Heard Rod Fung said he was not happy with how the series is being changed from being a tactical simulation to being more arcadey.

If i want arcade style FPS i have a ton to choose from, and i really hope that the delay might mean that UJ is closer to its roots.

Well, there is still Raven Shield(minus the heartbeat sensor) to fill my needs.

Hell, they can pretty much rebuild the entire game in that amount of time... leaves you to wonder just how bad a state it's in right now? So it will be over a year and a half delayed(un-officially of course).

Geez must be pretty screwed up if they're delaying it til 2K4. Too bad, I really enjoyed Swat 3 and was looking forward to this sequel

I just checked out the recent screen shots. Pretty good use of the Quake 2 engine.

...I wonder what is going on with the game. It has already been "unofficially" delayed a number of times, but I had previously thought that it would be out this year. I was expecting a late '03 release, avoiding a number of other titles due for the same mid-year time period, but I was not expecting something like this.

Shrugging, going to be playing RS and IGI 2 in the meantime,
Ray
