Ok, I have a question or two. Are all the security attacks on IE purely because of bad programming or are they just aimed at IE because it's the most used browser? Are the other browsers really bulletproof or are they just being ignored? I have to admit I use IE because it works and I don't know any better. I do make sure I update it every time there is a new patch... which I admit is fairly often.

-----------------------------------------
Of course I could be wrong... but really, what are the chances of that happening twice?

What is tabbed browsing? I might check into one of these front ends to see what they are all about.

I'm still waiting for all these scaaaary "security holes" in IE to actually affect me.

See... that's the funny thing about security holes. Once one affects you, it's too late.

I've never been run over by a car. Doesn't mean I've decided I don't need to look both ways before I cross the street.

I use IE. It works great. I'm still waiting for all these scaaaary "security holes" in IE to actually affect me. I've been a web developer for 10 years now, and I've been using IE since version 4.0. I'd love to be trendy and whine about it, but it works great for me.

I use Netcaptor (another IE front end) for the best implemented tabbed browsing I've seen yet, translation (damn Japanese sites) and pop up protection plus more. Really nice!

Maybe try running a defrag then to get your load times in tip top shape, sir!

Okay... this is just getting silly. Are all Microsoft Apologists this persistent?

I have a Norton Speed Disk scheduled to run one night every week, and I'm running off a RAID array of 2 WD 120GB 8MB Cache (special edition) hard drives... you just can't chalk this up to my hardware. Especially when Mozilla seems to load on my system about as fast as IE. Obviously no config problems here.

Jeff

Edit: I had a theory earlier that you were clocking a repeated load of IE... I tested that by repeatedly opening IE windows, and by about the 5th or 6th one, they were indeed loading in a second or less. Want to know something even cooler? I did the same thing with Mozilla, and it was even a little faster than that.

I love Mozilla. I use it all the time. It has way better features and security than IE, and it doesn't really load any slower (with Quick Launch turned on, of course). I love browsing in tabs and never seeing pop-ups. I very, very rarely run into a broken website that doesn't render properly or has some feature missing -- But that means the website designers suck and the site is broken, it has nothing to do with my browser.

That's what I really hate about Microsoft and IE. They take all of the official standards and bend them to their will... This makes designing websites a pain in the ass, unless you don't do your job properly and design for one browser or another -- in which case you should be fired, and you are missing a lot of potential customers/visitors, etc...

That's your system asking for more RAM.

Um... no.

I have half a Gig of RAM, and right now (with lots of stuff open) Task Manager is telling me I have 195016K (physical) available. Why is it so hard to believe that someone is having luck with something other than IE?

That's your system asking for more RAM.

And quite often I'll use IE to quickly look in a folder I have while I'm browsing the internet.

Yeah, I like IE better [...] Worth a look if you love IE and want some of the features it lacks.

True, there are other products that take IE and tack on a lot of the features you can find in Mozilla or Opera, but that doesn't generally fix the two biggest problems I have with IE:
1) It's still a Microsoft product and feeds the monopoly. (This point is obviously an irrational one, but it sways me nonetheless.)
2) It's still the biggest online security threat on your system. Microsoft has shown little to no interest (beyond lip-service) in plugging known holes in any kind of timely manner. They'd rather sweep them under the rug so Joe User doesn't hear about it, rather than fix it so that it doesn't impact anyone.

Remember about 6 months ago when someone discovered a flaw in IE's handling of SSL that let a very simple script intercept your transactions and spoof the remote server you were sending passwords/credit cards/whatever to?

Scary.

#8 thats bull shit. I have an athlon xp 1.4 GHz and my IE takes a fraction of a second to start.

Uh... first of all, true for you does not mean true for everyone. If you're going to use grown-up language, use grown-up logic.
Second, I would bet a month's salary that you "measured" the time to open IE the second (or some successive) time. If I launch it now, yes, it does take less than 2 seconds. (Fraction of a second is still stretching it.) When I launched it for my previous post, it was the first time I'd pulled it up since I rebooted a few days ago. (Since it's not my browser of choice.)

Can you use those browsers to view your files on your hard drive yet? Without viewing it like an ftp site that is?

What? Why on earth would you want to? Don't you have an operating system to do that?

Yeah, I like IE better, but its behind the times in popup blocking and tabbed (multiple page) browsing, and a few other things, so I use a front end. Currently I use Avant Browser, but MYIE2 is pretty good as well, maybe Crazy Browser... Worth a look if you love IE and want some of the features it lacks.

I'm trying opera out right now. It loads just as quick as IE I noticed. I found it annoying to have to close a million useless toolbars on my first time loading it and is there a way to make the main bar icons smaller... they're way too big. Also I noticed that on one of the regular sites I go to it doesn't show the buttons on the site at all. Nice. Well I gave it a shot and I like my IE better

Edit: Also file navigation is ugly.
