Unreal II Patch & Demo News

A post to the Infogrames Forums by Legend's Glen Dahlgren (thanks Jim Canuel) has word on plans for both a patch for Unreal II, and definitive word on plans for a demo, something that was up in the air prior to this point (story). Here's the update:
I wanted to give you all a quick update about what's happening on the home front. While we Legend guys haven't been posting here as much as we'd like (things are still pretty crazy here), I assure you we have been reading your comments and concerns, and we take them all very seriously.

As you may have read in the forum already, we're planning on releasing a patch sometime soon. It should address a number of the issues that people have raised in these forums. As well, we're going to be releasing a demo, especially targeted at those of you who want to 'try before you buy'. It should be a great benchmark to see how the game runs on your particular system.

In a later post, I'll try to get you some specifics about both of these, but it shouldn't be too long until you've actually got them in your hands.

Thanks to everyone for your support.
Update: This Infogrames Support Page (thanks Shacknews) has a new mini-patch that hopefully addresses crashing issues with EAX sound cards.

is the one that lets you run the game without the damn "Play Disc" in your drive (I have a home and a work machine, I don't want to carry the disc back and forth). Unreal 1 had a simple fix for this, and it doesn't seem to have stopped the pirates - I guess InfogramEs just plain doesn't like its paying customers.

Single Player ONLY shooters are not this short. Even AvP was longer than this, and it was one night per campaign (though does come with multiplayer). Two nights of play for $50 with no multiplayer to extend the title is a ripoff.

I wonder what the hell people are smoking when they say the gameplay is "only average" and nothing new. That should be said of SOF2, a disappointment for me -- it was just run & gun!

Unreal 2 has a variety of mission objectives (rescue, defend, etc., not always just "Kill enemies and find the switch." THAT'S "average" gameplay.), varied environments, original weapons, and of course, delicious graphics.

I also wonder what the hell people are smoking when they say Unreal 2 is too short--all shooters are too short! Deus Ex is the only shooter (and it's not really a pure shooter, either) that I DIDN'T beat in only two sittings.

Technically and Artistically I'd give the game a 10. Top notch visuals, atmosphere, and layout.

Bugwise it was bad when EAX was on, but when I turned that off I had a perfectly smooth game experience all the way to the end.

Plot and Length of Gameplay wise it was an absolute 0. It has to be the *shortest* FPS game I have *ever* paid $50 for. Not to mention the plot was absolutely horrid and a retread of an already-done-a-million-times Sci-Fi plot.

The ending of the next to last mission and the ending of the last mission were just terrible. The sudden "burst tranmission" with perfectly calm voices in the middle of such a hectic situation is just without belief. It really looks like Legend ran out of money and decided to just end the story where had finished up their last level completed at.

I'm not going to spoil it here, but come on. Waste of $50 even without any crashes.

its probably your machine rather than Unreal 2, like a low spec (lets face it the min requirements are a total LIE!)

it seems pretty rock solid apart from the EAX crash

I firmly believe Unreal 2 screwed up my OS as I have constant OS spikes the instant I loaded the game. I checked forums and did all kinds of trouble-shooting. After checking the forums I found that the game is completly buggy and unfinished. Later on when I have free time I'm going to complain to the Better Business Beureu of Infrogame's product policy. Its very unfair to people that pay for their product.

I'm sorry to say so (and you DO have a point there, sort of) but UT2K3 sales have been FAR FROM disappointing. In fact, it has sold extremely well. What UT2K3 lacks for now is online players. Partly due to the very different nature of UT2K3 compared to UT, but mostly due to people not having systems which can run UT2K3 fast enough (remember, for online games like UT2K3, framerate is very important, a lot more than single player games)

Hey John. How are ya?

Your insinuation that I lack experience is incorrect. I have been playing video games for years. A wide variety.

As for the making stuff up part, I did not realize this was a court of law. I thought this was forum. Of course I cannot prove what I said.

I believe if you are intelligent, you should be able to put the pieces together. News reports of infogrames disappointment in sales of Unreal 2003. News reports of Infogrames financial situation. The state of Unreal II as released to stores. No demo before the release to stores.

If you are smart you can put it all together. If not, you don't have to believe me. What do I care?

It's a fair point. If the game doesn't work then there's no way they can stop you returning it. I mean, the store might have returns policies coming out of their ears, but they can't override your basic statutory rights (that's what they're called in the UK anyway) to a product of satisfactory quality.

It's just a shame that people can use that as a loophole to buy a game and copy it, then return it, thus hindering the rest of us who might be returning it for legitimate reasons.

Damn pirates.

Especially targeted eh? I've got news for him, EVERYONE wants to 'try before you buy'...the only reason some people bought the game without 'trying' it is because they forced us too What a wanker...

no retrun policies are only for people that don't stand up for themselfs go along with what they are told. trust me i have returned many a game to places with no return polices. if the game doesn't work for you i recomend you do the same, the beter busness bueru always comes in handy if you run into any hassle.

presonaly i have the game and it only crashed once for me but i had done heavy tweaking to the ini to try to get it to run decent on my machine. the preformce on this game is abismal, it doesn't mater if you have the minimum system requirements or a high end system like i do, no mater how low you turn the settings the game will dip below 30fps at multiple points.

i will be shocked if the patch improves things enough to be impressive, i am still desideing if i will return the game myself or not.

I hope the patch works. Nearly a week later, it still won't start up after selecting difficulty and then crashes. You've got to love those no return policies. $50 down the toilet if this patch doesn't work(not to mention the hours of frustration). That settles it. I'll never buy a game without a demo again no matter who makes it. This game simply wasn't ready yet.
