Unreal II Patch & Demo News

A post to the Infogrames Forums by Legend's Glen Dahlgren (thanks Jim Canuel) has word on plans for both a patch for Unreal II, and definitive word on plans for a demo, something that was up in the air prior to this point (story). Here's the update:
I wanted to give you all a quick update about what's happening on the home front. While we Legend guys haven't been posting here as much as we'd like (things are still pretty crazy here), I assure you we have been reading your comments and concerns, and we take them all very seriously.

As you may have read in the forum already, we're planning on releasing a patch sometime soon. It should address a number of the issues that people have raised in these forums. As well, we're going to be releasing a demo, especially targeted at those of you who want to 'try before you buy'. It should be a great benchmark to see how the game runs on your particular system.

In a later post, I'll try to get you some specifics about both of these, but it shouldn't be too long until you've actually got them in your hands.

Update: This Infogrames Support Page (thanks Shacknews) has a new mini-patch that hopefully addresses crashing issues with EAX sound cards.

Chance,

In case you haven't figured it out yet, this forum was designed for feedback, both good and bad. Believe me, the game companies have people that read these boards to keep a pulse on public opinion. If people think Unreal 2 sucks, they want to know exactly why we think it sucks. Then can then take this information and look for recurring problems and eliminate troll posts. You can guarantee that other developers competing directly with games like Unreal 2 take our comments to heart as well.

They know they can’t please everyone, and they know some people are just highly opinionated and will complain about everything. However, if they see a bunch of complaints being echoed over and over by different people, then they have something to work with. The ones that have repeated over and over again most about Unreal 2 is the fact that the story sucked so bad, and the linear gameplay.

I don’t run a gaming company, but I do work for a software company. If we see complaints happening over and over, we will make changes to future versions of our software. I assume game companies are smart enough to listen as well. Being a gamer for 7 years now, I feel it is my duty to give specific feedback on the games I play. If I don’t, and a game like Unreal 2 disappoints me, how can I expect the games to get better in the future?

Shit, I wish I could get a job doing this. I’d love to get paid to play games and give my hardcore opinion. I don’t pull punches, and if something works awesome, I will let them know as well.

Zeph, I agree.

I said this in another Unreal2 thread, but my daughter playes Halo on our Xbox. She came into my office at home and saw me playing Unreal 2 and the first thing she said after watching for about 5 mins was "Dad, is this Halo 2?"

She does know the difference between the games too. She knows what Tribes2, Quake3, Urban Terror and other games are(although I do not allow her to play online yet because people are assholes).

Point is, she thought it was Halo2. My answer to her was "Yes, basically".

You know... maybe it's time for you to move on. If the damn game upsets you that much why the h*ll are you bothering to write about it? Chalk up one for experience and find something you like. I don't bother with the games I dislike. God knows I wasted enough time playing them to find that sorry fact out. Why waste more? I found the game moderately entertaining, if too short, and am looking forward to seeing what happens with it on the mod front. I think everyone who might have just run out and bought this game has heard peoples doubts / b*tches by now. That purpose has been served. We're at the whipping the dead horse stage now, aren't we? I've never really understood the propensity of gamers to do "b*tch threads" and burn their time... doing nothing about something they found unpleasant to begin with. I guess if that's what floats your boat, great... but it's pretty strange.

Unreal 1: Obvious, huge, generous amounts of love in their labor. They really threw their hearts and souls into and it showed. The game was so popular that it spawned Unreal Tournament, which many would argue was a good thing.

Unreal 2: <the following is fiction, but it sure feels like the truth>

“Well guys we’re making Unreal Tournament 2003, so I guess, sigh, we’ll have to put out Unreal 2.”

“Awww… really? More work?”

“Hey, can we make it look like Halo and use marines and stuff like Halo? I really liked Halo.”

“This is Unreal. This isn’t Halo.”

“Yeah, but we could make it like Halo. Halo was successful. Let’s make it like Halo.”

“Well there would still have to be Skaarj…”

“Hurray! We’re gonna make a Halo game!”

“I mean, um, Unreal 2.”

“Hey, can we use the same map parts like they did in Halo? That probably took a lot of work out of it for them.”

“No, but we just won’t work very hard at it. Whatever you make it will be accepted. If you want to make really good maps, then go ahead. If you are tired or just tired of working, then that’s okay too.”

“Can we just make a side-scroller?”

“Let’s repackage Duke Nukem. No one will know.”

“Yeah, gamers are stupid. They bought Warcrap 3 you know.”

Since i was introduced to Doom as my first shooter then that's the game i have fond memories of. Before that i only experienced what the Atari 800 offered If i played wolf then i guess Doom would have been only an incremental step up in graphics (z axis movement) better textures,models etc.. Unreal 2 certainly didn't capture the "spirit" of the first one. One issue that bothers me is the total lack of new shooters ala Hexen and Heretic and Wheel of Time. I like shooting machine guns as much as the next person but it's a cool feeling when you can place spells on baddies or your friends by turning them into sheep or the ability to fly for a certain duration
I like old dusty castles and creatures with strange abilities. Unreal 1 had castles AND space textures but still managed to intrigue simply cuz the graphics were so good. Generally, the two locales don't mix very well in single player. I really liked RTCW, the castles didn't seem to be out of place, in fact, i feel it added to the atmosphere.

My "first shooter" was wolfenstien, and I don't remember getting goosebumps from it. Doom was nothing special graphically, but cool anyway. Duke looked pretty sweet...all the colors. When the Quake 1 beta (Qtest) came out, I remember thinking it was cool but I wasn't impressed (with the graphics) until we were able to use Voodoos for graphics...then the world truly seemed 3D and amazing. I about shit myself when id released the "transparent water" patch and you could see people under the water. Unreal was the first game that was awe inspiring for me as far as looks go.

I don't think getting that feeling back will be a problem. STALKER will be all-around mind blowing I believe, as will DOOM3 (at least graphically), and DX2. The sheer scale and persistent world of Planetside will be something to behold.

I'm even gonna try my first MMORPG this year.(past ones bored me to death) "Star Wars Galaxies" which will have a game world depth unlike anything we have ever seen. For those of you who haven't checked out that game, you can spend hours reading about it on their official site, and it should blow you away. For the shooters like me, you can choose to get involved with battle. For pacifists, you can open a shop and make/sell shit if you want or do any of a zillion other things. Get this...if you decide to be a droid builder, they even built in a scripting language so you can give your droids custom scripts.....anyway....check it out. www.station.com Like I said, I've always been a shooter player, but this one looks damn sweet. I can't do it justice here, you have to spend a couple hours on their site to even begin to get an idea how deep this game is. The attention to detail and continuity in the "Star Wars world" is insane. I'm not even a huge Star Wars fan. It's almost in Beta 3, so it won't be in dev much longer.

I think the 3rd and 4th quarters of this year will be the long awaited (like 4 years worth of waiting) gaming renaissance. We will see some truly next-gen games.

Maybe that is why I am so hard on U2. It’s like one of the last of the old school shooters (at least for me). It seems retarded in the face of what’s to come this year, and certainly didn’t live up to the publishers hype, or the foundation the original Unreal built.

The next logical step for the visually jaded are 3D glasses. I know there's a few out there but they have some issues that have to be solved first before they become mainstream. As good as U2 and Doom3 are graphically, they still won't be able to capture the feeling we had when we played our first shooter.

The Engine is capable of much more than U2 offered. In fact, as I said before, I though the maps in UT2003 were way better....kick ass in fact. U2 felt rushed from graphics to story.

Just so we're clear, I actually just went out and repurchased DX1, and I am stoked to be playing it through again. It has more plot and story in the first damn section than U2 does in its entirety. This makes up for the fact that the graphics are lame by today's standards. A little story goes a long way in a single player game.

You don't have to agree with me, and I do have high standards. At $50 a pop for these games, I have every right to be critical.

It will be interesting to see what you say after DX2 is out. I think you have too high expectations for this or any single game to meet. As for the visuals in U2 not "blowing you away" -- too much eyecandy, from too many games, has left you visually jaded. It's like trying to catch that elusive feeling of your first shooter, your first ctf game, or any other memorable experience. It will never quite feel that way again... you can come close but not quite...

I agree 110% with your post Zeph. We've had a couple other Unreal 2 related threads on Blues that have since dropped off the "most popular" list. I posted some pretty detailed reasons why Unreal 1 BLOWS AWAY Unreal 2. I was really hoping for some more exploring and jaw dropping environments. The new Unreal engine is a marvel. It can do miracles, but apparently they didn't have time for those for Unreal 2. Not a single environment in Unreal 2 made my jaw drop like Sunspire and various other places from Unreal 1. Not even close.

To be honest, even though I hate UT2003's gameplay, I thought many of the environments in that game were MUCH better than anything I saw in Unreal 2.

Bring on DX2 so we can see what a real modern game is supposed to look/feel like.

I was really looking forward to this game. The original Unreal was utterly amazing. I was captivated. The Nali was a race that was well-developed, as they had reasons to help you, their own religion, and intricacies that made them more believable. The enemies were varied enough for me to enjoy the ride of infiltrating a nest of Krall or whatever. The pace was good and the environments varied well. The weapons were interesting. The scenery was incredible. The story was engaging.

Unreal 2 fails at every level. For one thing, it is completely obvious that this is a Halo rip off. The exoskeleton style armor, the marines, the way the machine-gun weapon fires, for starters. I miss the Nali. They drove the story very well. I don’t really care about the crew members, there’s no reason to select any of the response options except to continue the game because the game does not branch out in any way. I don’t feel very motivated to collect items. The enemies seem hard to see at a distance and they are a little too accurate in my opinion. They do move well. The environments & pace of the story don’t do anything for me. The biggest disappointment of all is the scenery doesn’t do much to compare to the leaps in technology of the original.

Unreal made your jaw drop and drool. When you saw sunspire for the first time, and realized how immense it was, you spent time there just amazed. Unreal 2 doesn’t have anything new. Oh sure, you can say, well the sun flares look good, or you can move electric fences around… SO WHAT! Even if I wanted to look around, it isn’t much fun because at the higher settings this game chunks about like a fag’s dick in tim’s butt. It sucks ass and I’m returning this piece of shit.
