Electronic Arts Invests in Multi-Year Publishing Agreement with Game Developer, Digital Illusions

is a press release announcing a new publisher/developer relationship between EA
and DICE: "Electronic Arts Inc. (EA), the world's leading developer and
publisher of video games, and Swedish developer Digital Illusions, C.E. (DICE)
today announced a strategic investment and long-term publishing agreement for
video games made by DICE studios. EA has purchased a minority interest in DICE
and licensed the worldwide publishing rights for future products developed by
DICE."

If EA has a lock on publishing and (?) distribution... well, if EA didn't want to do their part I guess DICE could make games to amuse themselves in the office and not be published / distributed worldwide. It depends on their license as to what EA can do. Seriously though, I can't see even EA killing a potential cash cow like DICE for no reason. I can see them making lots of "suggestions" that DICE might do well to listen to though (cue Godfather theme...).

or maybe EA will just shut them down after a year like they usually do...

Actually, with the money DICE got from this deal, they are supposed to develop 3 games on their own - that EA later will publish/distribute. That means even more control over the production than with BF1942 (where DICE owned the IP, but EA funded the development). It's a bigger risk too, but if the games are successful, more money will stay with the developer (DICE) rather than slip through to the publisher (EA).

Now if only DICE can integrate some VOIP (ala Halflife), I'd be in heaven.
I'd rather not hear screeching 12 year olds curse at me. VOIP doesn't really help coordinate things in a public game, if no one listens to you it doesn't matter how easily you can communicate. I think apps like Roger Wilco and Battlefield Communicator get the job done just fine when you want to easily talk with clan mates.

I think the new maps are even harder for one or two people to dominate, unlike some of the original maps where one or two people focused on capturing spawn points could rule the game. The new maps absolutely require some coordination. Now if only DICE can integrate some VOIP (ala Halflife), I'd be in heaven.

The new maps really are good!
Played all night, my eyes hurt and fingers ake - the new maps are exceptional.
Good thing, hopefully a solid deal will help DICE to create games even better than BF1942.
