RtCW Retreats from Enemy Territory

Saying they would not be taking any interviews or making further comments on this, Activision sends along the following release:
id Software and Activision announced today they are canceling the retail release of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Despite a strong effort from talented developers, the single player portion of the game did not progress as anticipated. Canceling the release was a difficult decision made in the best interest of the Wolfenstein franchise and fans. However, we remain excited about the progress and direction of Enemy Territory multiplayer. Over the next several months the focus of our development will be to complete the multiplayer portion of Enemy Territory and provide it as a free downloadable expansion to Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

In Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Axis and Allied teams do battle in traditional single scenarios, or wage war through a series of linked scenarios in a totally new campaign mode. During combat players gain experience and skill, and through battlefield promotions are awarded additional abilities that remain persistent across an entire campaign. Additionally, new character classes like the covert operative class as well as an enhanced engineer allow teams to perform reconnaissance, steal enemy uniforms, and construct battlefield structures and military installations in the midst of combat to gain tactical advantages for their team. All new game modes, maps and communication abilities require players and teams to develop advanced strategies and tactics in the struggle for front line domination.

I was in elementary school during the Wolf3D's time and was seriously hooked on it, finishing all the six episodes on my HDD. I even learned to use the mouse in Wolf, but I didn't have the proper left hand controls (I think I used Ctrl and Alt for strafing.)

I fairly certain that many of Gray Matter's devs also experienced the original at around that time of their lives, and hooked them into PC Gaming in the same manner.

DOOM III on the other hand is a completely different affair. id's experiences with the original are unique, having created the game as well as played it. This will reflect on what elements they decide should be kept as a tribute, and what elements should be changed so as to keep up with the times.

I'd like to echo that praise (wow, positive things on a board ?). RTCW is in my opinion the best multiplayer shooter out there, no contest. The level of coordination and tactics required for a map like the beach just floored me.

Well, I've been a regular on RtCW MP since release. Things have gotten a bit stale, but a lot of very high quality maps have been released for this game. Frankly, for my tastes, Wolf is the best Multiplayer experience.....EVER. YMMV of course.

It just presents classes that are dead simple to grow into, and the objective based MP missions really foster good teamwork. I'd have to say, that since Quakeworld, and the first coming of the clans, Wolf has been the best gaming experience I've had. I'm sorry to see ET ccancelled, but I hope the MP portion comes out in full force, with a lot of add-ons (keeping the new character classes would be nice, as would General's top-down view). Single player wasn't particularly memorable, but RtCW is really all about the Multiplayer.

pancreas, most people probably never played the original to know it's "cheesiness"... everybody claims to have started back in the day, but a lot of these guys would have been in diapers / kindergarten then. I played it but didn't find it "all that"... the game that hooked me on shooters was Doom, so I'm crossing various appendages and hoping that Doom III is a good one. Slower paced, horror themed, but still Doom. Of course, when I want that old fashioned Doom feeling / playing style I pop Serious Sam in and go for it.

People don't seem to understand that the cheesy elements of RTCW were not in there for cheesiness' sake, but as a tribute to the original game.

I enjoyed RTCW as much as I did MOHAA. Two different takes on a single theme.

Heh, heh. Pretty good #38. And thank god, I really have no interest in those games. Except I DID like RTCW cause it had the zombies and all.

This is certainly not what one would expect from a publisher, making the good part of a full-fledged (priced) game available for free download.

This may be sort of off topic but aren't RTCW and Jedi Outcast sort of the same engine ? If so, has anyone heard anything about coming up with mission based multiplayer for Jedi Outcast ? Something along the lines of the beach landing or the stormtroopers storming the Princess's ship would be wild. Frankly, I was shocked that U.T. didn't really include it (and the reason I didn't buy it).

Sad news. I was looking forward to this. I'm very grateful for the free download and the integrity shown by not releasing something they weren't happy with.

Is there any word on if one team would be allowed to play zombies on a few maps or a map option ? This would allow those who don't like zombies to avoid games including them but allow those who would like tangling with them (or being them) to have that option.

Perhaps it was that the single player bit was never even started and so they decided to have a BF1942-esque free addon to their existing game and sell more copies of it, while not annoying the people who bought the game in the first place.

The more I think about this the more I get aggravated by the fact that this game will have NO bot support. That was the main reason I bought the original and the only reason I would bother with an expansion. Even with it being a free download I won't be there. This one has been off my HD for so long now I should just sell it.

I really wanted this game to be my favorite for a long while. It didn't even come close.

This must have been a super turd for it to get canned.

Hump - I put forth the 0.5 because this version is a step back from the original that went to Hungary. I'll move to 2.0, but it will be a reluctant move. I want to be certain we preserve the trollish image of the original frederickson.

It's quite a bummer to hear no single player action but I must say it's nice to see a free add-on to keep the Wolfy croud wanting more Now just to see a new Wolfy game using the Doom 3 engine!!

Oh and Fredrickson...

The SP portion of the game was started; I recall reading hands-on previews of it a few weeks back.

And it was going to be a stand-alone expansion; regular RtCW wouldn't be required.

It's very strange that they would chose to tank development like this, especially since I presume it was already well on its way

Perhaps it was that the single player bit was never even started and so they decided to have a BF1942-esque free addon to their existing game and sell more copies of it, while not annoying the people who bought the game in the first place.

I'm trying to remember what portion of this was shown off at QuakeCon 2002 - was any single player shown off?
