Out of the Blue

Hide the cats and grab the pooper-scoopers, the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is once again in town. I've mentioned before, this was how MrsBlue and I would get our annual Airedale Terrier fix when we were city-dwellers and could not (or would not) keep a dog. The Airedale has not fared so well in the competition since the days of FDR, but it's always nice to have a rooting interest. In reality, the show is fairly bizarre, and frightfully similar to the satire presented in Best in Show, right down to the commentary of Fred Willard/Joe Garagiola ("how much do you think I could bench-press?").

When I was shopping for my TV, which both Circuit City and Best Buy carried, CC felt a lot more like buying from a fast talking used car salesman.

I've noticed this in the past, but I would say in the last year or so, anytime I say "Just looking" they go pester someone else. Of course, I buy low end stuff like games, so buying a TV or something with big $$$ could be different.

The theory of them cutting commission could be true, and would explain a lot.

Yep, I wouldn't trust a CC salesperson any farther than I could throw them (and I'm not very big, so it wouldn't be far, but you get the point). I came to this conclusion way back when they were pushing their Divx players. I knew all the drawbacks of the things when I went in there. I was looking at regular DVD players and the salesguy wanted to show me the Divx players. I decided to humor him. So I go look at them with him and stand there hardly able to keep a straight face as he tells me lie after lie about them. How there's no difference in quality or content, how it's just as flexible as a DVD player, etc. It was several years before I ever set foot in a CC store again. I was just completely disgusted by them. But, if they wanna sell me a Gamecube that cheap, then I wouldn't have anything against picking it up. I've got a decent tax return coming in a couple weeks. Trying to decide whether to blow some of it on a Gamecube or on a 9700pro

you're better of getting the cube if you are in college...

has alot of good drinking games.. Super monkey ball2 and smash brothers.. to name a few...

now ps2 does have to some great collection of single player games,, but it lacks a good party game.. probably becuase of the lack of four player port... or maybe ps2 owners are lonely gamers?

I actually just heard that Circuit City is in big financial trouble and that its workers no longer get commission.

I haven't been in Circuit City for quite a while, but I used to enjoy going there. Back in the "good old days" around like 1993 or 1995 or something, they very frequently had all CD's for $10.88 or less. That usually beat anyone else's prices. This current week they have all CD's for I think $11.99 or less, which is still very good for today. The store also had a nicer selection of audio equipment than Best Buy, at least several years ago when I shopped there.

Circuit City is a great place to pick up older games (Playstation or Nintendo 64). I've seen huge stocks of them, things you don't see at most places.

About the Cube deal...

I called Nintendo since I didn't think you were allowed to do this if you bought the Mario Sunshine bundle, and they said that even though it's not part of their offer, each retailer can do as they please. So I called the local CC and the main number (1-800-THE-CITY) and they guaranteed me that I could still get the rebate if I bought the Mario Sunshine Bundle. I made my point very clearly that I had not seen this offered anywhere else, and I said that I was almost positive their site listing was in error, but they assured me that if it was listed like that, and they saw it since they can check the site while they talk to you, that I will get it.

If you don't want a Mario Sunshine bundle, they are offering the black or indigo consoles (not platinum) for a mere $139.99! That's $10 cheaper than anywhere else!

My friends are telling me I'm foolish to buy a Cube, and I should get PS2 ( no I don't have that yet either!). I certainly would have both (and maybe even an Xbox... or maybe not ), but money is tight because of college tuition. And I figure that before too long Sony will go ahead and cut PS2 to $149.99, so I can get it then and pick up a ton of cheap games for like $20 or $30. But right now I really wanna play Metroid and then of course Zelda, so I think I've made up my mind.

At best buy, you can wait 20 minutes in line. At circuit, you're practically tripping over cashiers wanting to take your money.

Where I live there's a reason for this. When I was shopping for my TV, which both Circuit City and Best Buy carried, CC felt a lot more like buying from a fast talking used car salesman. I have no idea if this is true or not but it felt like the sales people at CC were working for commission while the BB people weren't. Maybe something as cut and dried as a game console wouldn't be like this but when it comes to a product that a person might actually need an extended warranty on it wasn't even close.

No offense to anyone here who might work for CC - that's just the way it is around here.

Of course I could be wrong... but really, what are the chances of that happening twice?

I think they're supposed to offer the $159.99 w/o a free game (besides the included mario), but more power to ya if they'll do it. I think circuit city has free shipping (ground, I'm sure) right now, too. I've been buying a lot more stuff there lately, since they have the same stuff as best buy, but no lines halfway halfway through the store to check out. At best buy, you can wait 20 minutes in line. At circuit, you're practically tripping over cashiers wanting to take your money.

I think you'll really enjoy the cube. I also recommend Time Splitters 2, and I see a lot of places have it for $29.99 now. Rogue Squadron is awesome, too. And Zelda. And Smash Bros. And Soul Calibur 2...you get the point, you're going to have a great time!

OK, I posted about this yesterday, but I've been researching and calling places all day, and it seems that you can order the GameCube with Mario Sunshine and Memory Card 59 (the bundled pack) for $159.99 at www.circuitcity.com, AND also receive a free game (Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 0, Starfox Adventures, or Mario Party 4). According to Nintendo, the deal only applies to the plain console for $149.99, but they said each retailer is handling it themselves. And circuitcity.com is the ONLY site out of like 10 I've checked that lists the free game being eligible even if you buy the Mario bundle.

What a deal! $159.99 for the system, Mario, Metroid (my pick), and a memory card! Choose the "express pickup" option, and you don't even have to pay shipping or tax!

Anyone else looked at this?

"frightfully similar to the satire presented in Best in Show"

Uh, yeah. That's because the Best in Show people watched the Westminster show and based the movie on it, in ways. There's no way Fred Willard could have come up with the Garagiola impression independently.

I love watching Westminster, though, even if the Dachshunds never win.
