Out of the Blue

Well I'm glad I mentioned that unsolicited pop-up dealie yesterday, because a forum comment made it clear that what I was suffering from was not a scumware situation, but rather a method for exploiting an internal Windows service. Thankfully indiv posted a link to the Stop Messenger Spam website, which clearly explained the problem, and how to solve it. Whew!

I'm amazed that more people don't have more personal firewalls these days either software (Blackice / Norton Personal Firewall) or some form of hardware (Netscreen 5xp / Sonicwall) that blocks these messanger spam attacks and a dozen others even before it gets to your computer. With more and more people going broadband, one really needs to invest in one. Their becoming a necessity just like Anti-virus at this point and the hardware ones let you do things like NATing but with stateful inspection. Before someone screams that their netgear broadband router has one, I don't trust those POS because usually they just mean some form of NAT with an access-filter.
