Ugh...WMP6.4 plays 99% of my movie files. Quicktime, last
time I had it on my PC wouldn't even do fullscreen. That
looks like, well, ass on my TV. Especially when streaming.

DivX is still the best. Realplayer may not be great, but
at least it does fullscreen.

You can also get Phoenix, its based of the mozzilla core. It has everything that IE has, all the shortcut keys work in it. Its only 10 megs, and it runs fast.

When a popup would happen an icon apears on teh status bar, if you click that icon you can let that www site send you popups, or not.

If you want to never se another pop-up again just start using Mozilla as your web browser and then you can select whether or not you want to allow scripts to:

Open unrequested windows (Pop up Ads)
Move or resize existing windows (no more sites that force fullscreen)
Raise or lower windows
Hide the status bar
Change status bar text
Change images
Create or change cookies
Read cookies

After using Mozilla for a long time I can't stand IE anymore.

AdAware is probably the best piece of software ever written for the Internet user. My brother in law got himself a Dell (it was real cheap), then was foolish enough to install Kazaa on it. He complained to me that his computer was running slow. I checked it, and found that his commit charge was running at 280MB. This seemed excessive.

So I installed and ran AdAware on his computer. It found 158 instances of Spyware (although about 60 of those were just cookies), not just from Kazaa, but from Dell itself too.
After killing all of them, his commit charge had dropped to 176MB...

AdAware rocks.

I wish those guys from Adaware would next make something that just KILLS popups, no matter where or what. If it works half as well as their spyware killer (it's called Trackware now?), it would be the biggest thing since sliced bread.

As for the messenger spam, I got hit with that two days ago, supremely annoying because I was just laying down the smack on some ignorant mortal online. Needless to say, Windows 2000 feels that a messenger window is FAR more important than your online game, so it kicked me out. By the time I had figured out what had happened, had killed the messenger window and had gotten back online, I had ofcourse been killed. Grrr... Wouldn't surprise me to see that people IN online games now use messenger to distract their opponents

Btw, that www.stopmessengerspam.com website... It's funny how that idiot is talking about how to stop messenger spamming, when HE was the one who spammed me in the first place! I've sent him a rather "friendly" email in which I say nasty things about his parentage and sexual habits.

With all of the changes that I have been makig to my computer in the past week or so, I have been lazy about dealing with my firewall and/or ad-removing software.

With the new version, I just deleted a meager 73 files.

You can stop it by running CMD(command prompt) under NT and typeing
"net stop messenger"
Or by going into services and stopping it there.

I'd add one thing: If you go into control panel/admin tools/services and stop it there (as Mashiki Amiketo mentioned second) you can also change it from an "automatic" service to a "manual" service. Then it will no longer start everytime you reboot.

You're probably talking about Windows Messenger spam, which is an annoying type of spam that takes advantage of built-in windows messaging capabilities. See http://www.stopmessengerspam.com/ for a sample picture of what messenger spam looks like, and I think the page talks about how to stop it (turn of the windows messenger service). Putting a firewall in place to intercept the requests is a fine solution, but you'd be better off learning what services your computer is running and turning off the services you don't need.

It basically causes your system to display a message and uses no extra software on your side...they just need an ip. If you think this might be the case, check your firewall. I've been running a free version of ZoneAlarm for a couple months now and no self generating pop-ups.

That Dream Portal link is so incredibly stupid it actually pissed me off.

When is the animatrix movie created by the guys who made Final Fantasy (the movie) coming out? The parts seen in the preview are ubercool!

But the lack of solid updates for it made me switch programs, I'm using Spybot - Search and Destroy now.

A very decent program, and finds everything and gives a rather nice description of each item and what the program does and who makes it. Privacy policies from each company, optin/optout info. Nice.
