Ships Ahoy - BF 1942: The Road to Rome

EA Ship Battlefield 1942 The Road to Rome for the PC is the press release announcing the Sicilian campaign expansion for the World War II combat game is now available. On a related note, Mega-Battlefield1942 Mega-Bf1942 + Editing (thanks Tiscali Games) has 2D overview maps of each of the areas included in the add-on. Here's a bit on The Road to Rome from the press release: "Focusing on the Italian and Sicilian campaigns of WWII, players can choose to fight on six new maps including Operation Husky (Sicily) and the battles for Anzio and Monte Cassino. Each map contains highly detailed environments featuring elements such as Italian houses, Mediterranean trees and the Monte Cassino Monastery. Controllable vehicles are the heart of the original Battlefield 1942 experience and The Road to Rome delivers by offering eight new vehicles, including the German BF-110 and British Mosquito twin-engine fighter-bombers, in addition to the more than 30 vehicles in the original title. There are also new Italian, British and German vehicles and anti-tank guns."

Let me warm up a bottle of milk and grab the burp rag. Games out of box that dont work well isnt an EA exclusive, but I think you should give it another shot, its a full on blast to play, and with www.bfstats.com, makes it kinda fun to see how your doing.

All I know is it played like crap when I *bought* it and I, therefore, took it back. I don't condone EA's practice of finishing a game after release. If it's not playable upon the day of purchase, forget it. I won't pay for the privilege of being a beta tester.

See... now you just sound like you have a vendetta against EA. Are you seriously implying that they are the only company to do this?

Would we like games to be more stable on release? Sure. Are we ever going to see a world where all games (or even a significant percentage) are bug-free on launch? Not as long as the complexity of them continues to increase.

You got your money back... you just said so... so why do you still vent such vitriol at EA? BF 1942 must have worked well enough for most of us, or it wouldn't have the phenomenal popularity it does today. It didn't work for you at launch, and that really is an honest shame, but you act like EA did that to you on purpose.

Orpon, I don't care *how* the game plays now. All I know is it played like crap when I *bought* it and I, therefore, took it back. I don't condone EA's practice of finishing a game after release. If it's not playable upon the day of purchase, forget it. I won't pay for the privelage of being a beta tester.

And OF COURSE Battlefield is getting all kinds of support now. Why? Because it's a hit. If the game had done just okay, EA would have left the damn thing unfinished and moved on to the next Sims expansion. Speaking of expansions, look forward to seeing "Battlefield 1942: Milking the Cash Cow" and "Battlefield 1942: Give us Money" some time in the near future. No doubt that "Sims Online" disaster is gonna leave EA looking to milk their successful products for all their worth.

What's this? Someone else that doesn't care for BF1942? I thought it was just me and everyone I know personally. As far as I'm concerned EA wrote the book on "How to make a marketable game without having to concern yourself with quality." Come on, is decent client-side prediction too much to ask for? "

Have you actually tried the game?

The network is super since the december v1.2-patch was realesed. And there sure is client-side prediction. With yesterdays 1.3-patch things got even moore smooth, but that is just icing on the cake as far as the netcode does. Other updates had a much more obvious impact...

Do yourself a favour and try this baby out, have not had as much fun since Quake came out back in '96...

And by the way - read the devs already got milestones written in stone for patches up to 1.7, so there will support for BF1942 for a looong time to come...

Ditto.

Dont have Road To Rome yet cos the fekker isnt out here til Friday in the UK, but the vanilla game runs mighty fine now in 1.3 - it was perfect in 1.2 as well but the new additions in 1.3 are superb I find. The new sounds (which some people dont like) are pretty sweet, especially the engineer rifle because I use that class more often than not.

Not had a single problem in 1.3 so far, but the one bug thats been in the game since it shipped still remains - in spectator view when you die, it still sometimes punts you to the very bottom left of the map. Its hardly a major annoyance though and doesnt affect gameplay whatsoever.

I have no idea how this game played with the original release, since I've started with 1.2. Anyway, no lag for me, the netcode is just perfectly stable.

You can't even read the text in this game. Who picked the font for this thing? I love MOH:AA but I loathe this game (original release version). Too many vehicles, not enough infantry tactics. The way people play it, they should do away with infantry altogether. And Lag Lag Lag. I think people have different perceptions of what they consider lag. Because this stinkin' game takes forever to load and lags with 32 players. Period. If someone could tell me why myself and three friends (all with broadband connects & fast rigs)should buy this game & the expansion, instead of playing MOH:AA, I'd love to hear it.
