Out of the Blue

Happy Super Bowl Sunday. I heard a radio commercial a while back that made the point that if there was anything that could qualify as National Man's Day here in the U.S. this would be that. I don't know if that's true, but there does seem to be the the scent of testosterone in the air. Maybe I'll go and warm up by crushing some beer cans against my head (though this time I think I'll empty them first... last time I tried it with full ones I made a huge mess).

Admit it though Bronco, I've seen fake fredrickson get to you a couple times.

I am vigorously defending the memory of the original fredster

And to nin - you do more to stir up the fake frederickson (ff for short) than anyone else around here. Keep up the good work.

I try not to feed the trolls but sometimes they're just so darn cute.

I try not to feed the trolls either, but sometimes I just want to beat them over the head repeatedly.

The fredster's fun to screw with...I'm not sure of he's a kid, a troll, on medication, or if english isn't his first language (or a combination of any of the above). But I still find him humorous, and try not to pick on him too much...

Even better, check out his previous comments. He actually gets on somebody else for complaining about the content of this site.

Erm, superbowl doesn't exist outside your small country. The rest of the world doesn't even know what it is.

Well, that's not true, I for one am watching the superbowl here in germany ever since it gets broadcasted (which is only for the past 3-4 years if I recall right).

There's a lot of drawbacks associated with it, though: first off you need to stay up all night up to 4 a.m. to watch it, secondly I still have a hard time to get hold of all that rules. But the most annoying aspect is that hardly anyone over here watches TV at that time of day, making it very unattractive for companies to buy ad time. Result last night? I had to watch one single stupid Burgerking ad repeated for 4 hours, every 2 minutes. Yes, the same ad and nothing else o_O

But beside that it's a very fun event to watch, a perfectly organized show with a little sports thrown in. I have no favoured team whatsoever, heck I don't even know a single player, but it's fun to watch anyways

I'm presuming it's got something to do with bowls and soup ?

I like the Raiders because of their players (Rice, Gannon, etc.), their team colors, and their fans. Raiders fans are rivaled only by the Browns fans in eccentricism (is that word?).
Not to mention that they have a history of being an agressive team.

I hate to admit this but I think the real reason most people hate the Raiders is because they're usually pretty good. For instance, who hates the Cardinals? You may not be a Cardinal's fan, but there's really no reason to hate them.

Plus the Raider's owner, Al Davis (who I swear is slowly turning into Angela Lansbury) seems to always be suing the NFL over something.

He, he, he...now I just need somebody to explain to my why people so love/hate the Raiders. I live in California, but I have noticed that this is most definitely not limited to the state.

Loving the Raider-themed commercials that they have on now,
Ray

I wonder about that, though, the displacement of ones "self" coupled with the emotion/thrill of the competition.
There are other aspects of it that create a personal association with the team/player(s) in place of actually being one of them. Sometimes it's that they're representing you, in the case of the team being that of your home town, and especially in cases like in college, where you are actually part of the "franchise" (and then there's the Buckeyes, where us central Ohio natives treat them as both ;). And you're always putting your own judgement on the line when you have a favorite team that you want to win. Them winning or not winning subconsciously reflects on your knowledge of the game.

Really, I think there doesn't necessarily need to be a personal liking of any team to enjoy a game like football. It's just fun to watch, at least for me. My mom doesn't usually like any sports, but with my Dad and I being complete Buckeye fanatics (even though he's the only one in our house that has gone to OSU), she's now the one yelling the loudest during the games. I think the ESPN commercial put it best with the different people yelling at the TV, "Without sports, there'd be no one to coach".

Yeah, I'm not sure what the big deal is about watching grown men getting payed too much money to run around chasing a little ball and touch each other. Somehow, though a lot of guys consider that manly.
You mean "paid"?

I wonder about that, though, the displacement of ones "self" coupled with the emotion/thrill of the competition. It has been updated with time, but it does honestly remind me of gladitorial combat. I enjoy sports for the challenge, exercise, and interaction, but I would rather play the sport than watch it. On top of that, I do not take possesion of any of the players and/or teams in my mind. I might be in awe of somebody or something, but that is about it.

I realize the apparent irony coming from a "gamer," but I would argue that there are a number of differences. That is not to say that there are no similarities.

You fix your mascara, I'll watch football with some close friends. You shop and play games in isolation, sports allows you to interact with other drunks, er.... people and have a great time!

Wow, I really have no idea where all of that came from, especially when expressing my view on sports. If you want to hate me, hate me for the person I am and not the person you have decided to make me out to be.

Wondering when I started wearing mascara %),
Ray
