New Jedi Knight Shooter?

HomeLan Fed is reporting on a tidbit dropped during an Activision investor's conference call that a sequel to Raven's Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is expected to be released during fiscal 2004 (mid 2003-mid 2004 by more traditional calendars). There is no official confirmation of this report, nor is there any indication which combination of the franchise's splintered titles this project might carry, as it could be considered Dark Forces IV, Jedi Knight III, or Jedi Outcast II.

What I don't understand is why user ID's are allowed to be reused? Any other forum that I've registered with ensured that the name I chose wasn't already in use. Seems like it should be an easy feature to implement. No?

At first it appeared that these totally uncreative people were just modding the user name slightly to mimic their victims hence the Tony!!! Tony!!!!. Now it does appear that duplicate user id's are possible. This seems kind of strange thing to plan for, but then again who would have thought that people would do this just to be stupid.

And since we're on the topic of trolls I'd like to request/recommend (yet again) the ability to filter out posts from specific individuals. I'm not talking about banning. They can post all they want to, just let me decide if I want to see the post.

Up to the recent debacle I would just ignore certain user names...no real need to filter.

I believe the person to direct these questions to is Bagpuss, he wrote the code for these boards. His website says that V2 http://www.chatbear.com/v2/ of his software is due to be released soon. Maybe 2.0 will address these issues?

I've had email exchanges with him in the past and if I recall correctly he said that this board is a modified version of his regular chatbear board.

He reads these boards so maybe he'll respond.

Wasn't hard to tell the difference between your rational posts and the trolling. annoying to have to put up with that type of juvenile stupidity though. It's like having to check everyone's ID before you can be sure it's them...

That wasn't me. The sig was Dr. Del's. One of the many Dr. Del's.

If you look back (or think back) you'll find that me and Dr. Del first met across a heated debate about Hitman 2. SO it's unlikely that we're the same person

I've been signed up on this board for years, but only really started posting lately. Del has been around a while.

Instead of trolling anonymously, the kiddies are now signing themselves up with the same names as some of us (see Tony!!! et al) and then trolling while looking like us in order to give us a bad name.

It's kinda lame.

Chance: I'm the original Von Helmet, though people often misquote my name as Von Helmut.

Further... I barely ever swear. Like, practically never these days. So if someone is using my name and using naughty words in the post, then it's 99% likely that it's not me.

You're probably thinking of X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, X-Wing Alliance. Seems they have scrapped those in favor of the Rogue Squadron model (Rogue Squadron, Starfighter,Naboo), which is probably more console-friendly.

I can't recall the names of them right now, but they were the fighter simulations that one had you playing for the Alliance while the other the Empire. You followed the path of your particular pilot and went on missions, a few mission's as seen in the movies would happen every now and then. I loved those games to death, they redid the X-Wing version once multiplayer became popular but the game didn't turn out too well. I really wished somebody would up date those with todays graphics and physics engines. And make those star destroyers huge and beutiful.

Well, this Von Helmet has only 17 posts... I seem to recall far more posts from a "Von Helmut" -- probably the original. Some slight change to the name allowing what is essentially identity theft. All the posts under this Von Helmet are signed Dr. Del and are characterized by his usual trash talk. IIRC there is anothr "Dr. Del" as well. This is just some troll who likes to cause additional trouble by immitating other posters.

*edit* Remember the different Tony!!! posters -- the original had three exclamations with the name and the immitator had two IIRC. The joys of posting on an unmoderated board.

*edit* Just click on the profile and check the post count and consider "old names" with only a couple of posts as suspect / fraudulent.

Who knows?

However, I did not take notice of the original name of the poster and focused only on the name listed at the end of the post.

Either name, isn't the result the same?

Shrugging,
Ray

Although Deus Ex actually allowed you to regain your stuff after a small section of sneaking, so then it became more of a cool challenge rather than a "dammit, we've already used all our weapons, and we still have six levels to go, oh well, we'll just knock the player out and take all his shit".

Which, indeed, I frigging hate.

oh, and you're welcome indiv

Doh! Thanks Scottish Martial Arts and Creston, I do remember what Katarn says at the end of the game now. Shows how memorable the end-game sequence was for me.

I think there are actually more FPS that force you to loose your shit, and then regain it all.
Lots of games even do it in the middle of the game!
Half-life had it in the middle, and even Deus Ex had it..

<random gaming rant: on>

You know, I am really tired of the whole "Oh, look! Your character lost all of his/her weapons/powers for this level!" design.

It is not that they cannot do it anymore, but too many games just toss it in as a way of adding something "new" or "challenging."

<random gaming rant: off>

Missing those huge, living SW worlds/levels,

Hi Jedi Master,

No I haven't read Traitor yet, I'm still in Edge of Victory II, so Traitor is quite a long ways away yet. Is that the soonest the punk actually becomes bearable? Man, I wish they killed him instead of Chewie...

Btw, Raven has ALWAYS done three games at once. Jedi Knight 2, SoF2 and Quake 4 were all in the works at the same time. Same as with Voyager, Jedi Knight 2 and SoF2 etc. Goes back quite awhile.
So yes, Raven COULD be doing it

Personally I think Raven makes very playable, very fun shooters. They aren't the BEST shooters around (Raven needs to hire a writer I think, someone who can add unexpected things to a story, drop some red herrings, surprise and whack you every once in awhile. I hear JMS is looking for work ), but Raven still makes very enjoyable games, and I usually pick their stuff up without reading reviews. Last company I did that with was Origin, way beyond before EA fucked them up.

Well ok, Ion Storm Austin is another one, but I mean, sheesh, that's ***Warren Spector***.

Btw ****spoilers****

Kyle does not give up his Lightsaber, Luke says "I know, I'll be happy to hold your lightsaber for safekeeping."
To which Kyle replies, "No, I think I'll hold onto it for now."
After which Jan slaps his arm and says "Ha, I knew it! Lando owes me five credits!"

Sheesh, I have REALLY played that game way too much..

But yeah, they need to come up with some other idea besides "oh, you lost all your forcepowers! Gain them again!"
AND they need to go back to JK1's system where YOU got to choose which force power gets upgraded, instead of THEY choosing for you. I mean, the whole argument of "it makes levels very hard to playtest" is bullshit anyways. The ONLY forcepower that makes a difference in a level is Force Jump, so instead of making your level high enough so that ForceJump 1 or ForceJump 2 can't jump over it, you just make it so that ForceJump 3 can't jump over it.
void(main)
{
If level z-axis < 16
do level z-axis = 20
}

That can't be too hard, can it Raven?

Creston

You sure he gives up his lightsaber? As I recall Luke asks if Katarn wants to give it back but Katarn replies that he'd like to hang on to it. I still have my save games on the hard drive so I'll have to check.
