I think the biggest problem with HoMM4 is that there is very little to no strategy in any given battle. Because you can take as many units into a battle as you want, 99% of all battles are a foregone conclusion from the second they start. I trash the computer's town which has 30 defenders with a mixed group of 100 units, 20 turns later he brings a group of 400 units and trashes my 100 units.
Where's the strategy in that?
That, and the fact the AI is STILL non existant (and has to cheat to make up for it) made HoMM4 a rather big disappointment.
Master of Magic is still King. God, I wish someone would make a sequel to that.
Btw, anyone who's eager to relive some old turn based fantasy gaming heaven, you can download MoM from the underdogs (
http://www.the-underdogs.org/). Getting it to run with sound is a chore, but if you don't mind not having sound, just run the shortcut to the main .exe by letting Windows assign EMS automatically, and voila
(Btw, if you DO download from the underdogs, consider paying them a buck or two, they're an awesome site doing awesome work.)
