posted their impressions from participating in the testing of the new version
1.6 beta of Counter-Strike, slated for release tomorrow. They discuss the new
version of the Steam content delivery system that provides the beta, the updated
Valve Graphical User Interface, impressions of the new stuff included, and more.

where they have also posted some
screenshots from the beta.
Is it just me or do those screenshots from gamehelper remind of Doom2?
Either way CS is looking way to dated to draw in any new players. I'll stick to SOF2 thanks.

I'm guessing that alot of people who don't play games simply for the uber-far-out-pushing-my-computer's-limits graphics or realism might want to pick this up...
there are screens of the FAMAS/Riot-Shield in action... they're a ways in though.
EDIT: to those of us who already own the game... we just get a little more.

The graphics certainly aren't anything special anymore, but then nobody has really cared much about the graphics in CS. It's the gameplay that makes it so popular. Nothing else has yet come close. I played SOF2 for a while, hoping it might be a CS-killer. It fell quite short. As did Global Operations, another game touted as a CS-killer. Sooner or later someone will make a game with better (or at least as good) gameplay than CS. It just hasn't happened yet.

Might be fun, but I don't have a copy of HL anymore. Someone borrowed mine and forgot to return it. The only one I can find in stores is that one that comes with all the extra stuff and costs like 40 bucks

i doubt doom3 will put much of a dent in cs popularity, thats comparing apples to oranges.

If you haven't yet, try the RavenShield demo. It absoltely destroys CS.

I tried Urban Terror for a while. It's an ok mod, but it doesn't beat CS.

It looks as if our friend Oblivion is a victim of social proof. Popularity != Quality.

I do agree that there are some aspects of CS than UT just cannot touch (like weapons physics for example). But the map design in CS is just plain bland (and the engine being 6-yrs-old doesn't help).

So you are saying that McDonalds food is "quality"? It may be good sometimes, but it's really more convenient than anything. You need to think through this a little bit harder. . .
