I totally agree. MOHAA and HL were good games, but very linear. Deus Ex was quite good, but the best game IMHO has to be Morrowind. The main plot may be fairly linear, as there are basically only 2 ways to finish the main quest, but you are free to go wherever you wish to go. You can join any guild you like, but every action has it's consequences. Morrowind is by far the most interactive game I have played so far.

I don't really believe any game is truly non-linear, but that there are some that excell in it more than others.

In GTA3 you are usually given objectives with very few restrictions on how to achieve them. The broad array of options encompasses not only weapons, tactics and your interpretation of the storyline (Such are the limitations in Deus Ex) but even mission planning and the general style of execution. Though of course the objectives are very simplistic and the storyline is facile and trite compared to Deus Ex's.

I think the ultimate non-linear paradigm is to create a game that evolves according to your actions, and not just merely accomodates them like in most "non-linear" games. But this would be difficult if not impossible to implement within the current state of computer AI and as stated, testing procedures.

"UII is just another hash of an old title.... think Epic and then think EA Sports....Unreal 2004 next year anyone?"

Eh ? Unreal II is a single player game with zero multiplayer, think you are confusing it with UT2K3 - now that's turning into a bit of a 'Fifa-esque' affair, but don't quite see where you are going with that either, its an online game like the ones you are quoting as being "where its at" ?

For a start Unreal II is being developed by Legend - not by Epic (although they are overseeing the project) Don't see how it can be a re-hash since the intended gameplay is quite different from the first Unreal, and not to mention at least 4 years since the last one so the benchmark for single player games has risen a great deal (Nolf1&2, HL, Deus Ex etc).

If you are planning to warez the game before it even hits the shelves or there are reviews out then you obviously had no intention of buying it anyway. I'm no Epic fan but I buy my games, if I think its going to be crap I just don't buy, You are a thieving scum if you warez.

Games like this (mmmm let me see Unreal II, IGI 1, And that horror type unreal engine game thats was soooo great ... i forgot its name) SUCK!!!!

Sure yeah the first few minutes while you say nice gfx... good sound.... control system ok....... are good enough - but as soon as that 1st bad AI dude stands there, runs into a wall, takes 3000 shots and misses ......... its outta here. Gimme human players.... BF1942, AC2, Any Xbox live game but especially MotoGp, thats where its at and always will be. That's very true.

Deus Ex appears non linear, but as you say... it isn't really. It gives multiple solutions to problems and a lot of open ended ways to do things.

I liked the mission in the Versalife building. The MJ12 bit. You could either run and gun, or you could use stealth augs and cloak yourself, hush your footsteps and run past everyone. It was great to have the choice of how to do things.

It also helped being given so much info and story line about what was going on in the game, as it gave you a chance to form your own opinions on what was going on and how you wanted to deal with it.

But yeah, it's not truly non-linear. Just free enough to give a sufficient feeling of free choice.

Problem with non-linearity is that its a beotch to test, multiple paths or story trees are the way to go. I'm hoping that Deus Ex 2 goes to town on this!

Very, very, very few games are non-linear. Some (like Deus Ex) have story trees, but you do all the same things, then you have a choice, then you get back onto the track. Most of the time, non-linearity in games doesn't work very well, because the player will feel lost/get killed, and the story won't play out properly. Really, non-linearity is overrated, but story trees are underused.

GTA3 as some non-reality, at the expense of a crappy story.
You don't care at all about what will happen next. I wouldn't call Mafia "non-linear" since you end up having to followi the story.

Deux Ex is a good exemple since you can change it based on your action.

What would be better would be the non-linearity of Deus Ex's story with the freedom of GTA3...

That said, Unreal2 seems like a great game and why would you bitch because a game as gone gold?

Yeah I've played Deus Ex. It's just that IMO the GTA games are a better example of non-linearity.

Among more recent games, Mafia had some fairly non-linear GTA-style moments (You can blow cars up with guns too), but they kept the mission progression linear to get the pacing of a great story just right.
