Out of the Blue

Lately I've had some serious glitches with my gaming computer, and as a temporary network troubleshooting effort as much as anything, installed a couple of games on my work computer as a control test. As it turns out, this measure may be more than temporary, as this machine seems to not only clear up the problem I was addressing, and plays everything I've tried so far flawlessly, in spite of this machine's use of Windows 2000 Professional, which Microsoft readily admits is not very well suited for game playing. Go fig.

R.I.P.: Bee Gees singer Maurice Gibb dies. Thanks ZigZang.

Play Time: Inter - Face. Thanks Sharon.
Link of the Day: Rocking horse toilet. Thanks John Coke.

Speaking of glitches... anyone else have problems with Blues yesterday? I wasn't able to see any of the news for the latest day yesterday... all I saw under the date header, in fact, was the "over a seventh of a billion" blurb at the bottom of the date, then the previous days header and all of that days news.

I thought it might be a browser glitch, but it happened with both IE and Mozilla so... I dunno. I expected to find a comment about it today, but haven't seen anyone else mention it yet.

Windows 2000 Professional plays games better than any other OS I've ever had.

There are a few older games (that came out before Win2k was released) that I can't get to work under 2K, but every new game runs flawlessly.

I've compared it with WinXP, and 2k just rules.
Makes me weep to think that Microsoft is ditching 2K support in favor of eXtreme Pain in just 2 years...

Assuming this isn't a joke, and I don't think it is, can anyone imagine even one of these things being sold? Where do you put it, over a hole in the backyard? How about those sturdy legs... and are those footpegs made of rebar? Please, someone explain this to me.

I recently saw a documentary on the Gibb's. Very talented family, very nice people. Sad to see such a nice, talented guy die so young.

2K and XP Jan 12, 2003, 15:57

Having tried both, I have left XP on my main games playing machine. I like some of the features it has, and I turned off everything else. Personally, I took the short time to get things sorted just how I like it, and I have never had a problem with this OS, so it's here to stay.

MS really did screw up somewhat when they named the next business OS (and continuation of it's NT line) 'Windows 2000', having gone 95, 98, 98SE, most would assume that 2000 comes next. Still, not even billions of dollars can buy you common sense.

I'm probably posting the bloody obvious here, but people do realise that photo and the close up aren't the same picture. Firstly, the ring is narrower on GWB's finger. Also, the ring is further from GWB's knuckles than in the close-up.

BTW, I use Win2000 for my games (and everything else) too. 98% of games run fine. The only ones I haven't got to run find only fail because they deliberately check the OS and fail if it's not Win9X.

Cheers,
Quboid

I've been totally happy with 2K performance...I've known at least 2 other people besides myself where XP just eats itself and refuses to load one day. No thanks!

Oh, and you call it "eXtreme Pain", I just call it "Ex-Pee".

Microsoft saying that win2k is not for games, is purely marketing.

They know that Win2k is a very stable Windows platform, but that there is no recurring revenue in that OS. So, unless they push new technologies and quickly quit supporting Win2k, people will have no reason to change to another OS. Specifically XP, which is built around subscription content and media control.

So they simply turn out the marketing team to kill 2K on the desktop, and get it replaced with XP. Saying games are no good on Win2k is part of that.

(oh, and I've never had a problem with Win2k and games, or much else for that matter)

For what it's worth - I also had this problem (the system file would somehow go "missing or corrupted") numerous times, like once every other boot up, and so did a lot of other people. I figured a quick and dirty way around it but it was still a pain when it happened. Microsoft's solution at the time would be to tell you how to restore your system without ever addressing the cause - probably because they didn't know. I think it had something to do with the timing between the ram and hardrive during shutdown. Anyway, since I installed the service pack, I haven't had it happen once.

I don't really give a hoot what OS Blue is using to play games, I'd just like to hear about WHICH GAMES he's playing. I miss the little anecdotes about what games were being enjoyed in the Blue Tower.

WarPig[doh], thanks for the heads-up! I'm sure I'll eventually have to cross that bridge again (say, once something isn't supported under 2K and won't run), so I'll keep that in mind.

Maybe I'm dreaming, but when Win2k first came out IRC it was hyped as a gaming platform but there were scores of games that it wouldn't run. They released some pretty big fixes / service packs for that IIRC. I remember one list with over 100 games on it that "would now run under Win2k". It was embarrasing for MS (so what's new there). Give XP a couple of years and multiple service packs and I suspect it will be as good, or better, a gaming platform than Win2k. Xp is it's direct succesor, it wouldn't make sense for them to continue support for an obsolete OS forever (and let's face it obsolete in computers doesn't take long).
