Black Hawk Down SP Demo

A single-player demo for Delta Force: Black Hawk Down has made its way onto the internet after being released on the cover-mount CD of a gaming magazine (thanks Tim Tibbetts). Apparently an updated demo that addresses some shortcomings in this one and adds the multiplayer component from the previously released demo of NovaLogic's upcoming DF game is in the works for a release in a few weeks, but in the meantime, no objections are being raised to the distribution of this demo, which can be found on 3D Gamers, FileShack (registration required), and Worthplaying.

I actually enjoyed it. I played it at 800x600 16 bit
normal detail settings on a P4 1.3Ghz 256 MB Ram, GeForce 2 Ultra. Not sure what samuelk's problem was.
Yep it was pretty damn choppy at times but it was still playable. I blame my outdated videocard. Overall I think they did a good job at recreating the movie but yeah the AI is dumb as a stick. I could deal with that and be my own 1 man army but your teammates crowd and block you and get you killed because they move up to close behind you. The bad guys are just standing around waiting to be killed in most cases. I liked this a lot better than the first demo (multiplayer) and I was disapointed that there was only 1 mission because I wanted to play more. I might buy this when it's marked down. I give this a 5 out of 10 but only because my sys wasn't up to spec for it. Otherwise I'd give it a 6.
Zippy: Obviously you haven't tried IGI2 yet.

Yes, the frame rate did suck at some points (someone mentioned that it slowed inside buildings - for me everything indoors was perfectly smooth. It was flying around in the copter that slowed things down. I've got an aging AMD 1 gig, with a Geforce 4600.) And yes, the enemy AI at close range was pretty poor ... But even so I still got a kick out of the game. Pretty intense action and it captured something of the feel from the movie. If they can tweak the slow downs I may be buying this one.

Played through the demo last night and I wasn't impressed. Contrary to most people here I didn't think the graphics were that bad, no Doom 3, but definately not bad. What killed the experience was the numbnutted AI. I think Wolf3D even had slightly smarter AI. What could have been quite entertaining was completely destroyed by the stupidity of both enemies and friendlys.

ok...a day later & i may have been a lil "over zealous" in my initial assesment...cranked the video settings up and noticed the frame rate drop was in the same & only spot (outside the the hostage bldg) (?) so it looks better than DF2 by far...AI may be on "easy" setting for all i know...who iam i kidding , i know i will buy it , i buy EVERY FPS just to satisfy my bloodlust...or maybe it was the vodkas after work today that soften my critique...OH FUCK IT...LARKS VOMIT IT IS !

I downloaded the demo after i read all the posts =)
It ran perfectly with all the settings on max...until I went inside the house. God damn! talk about choppy fps, I must have had 6-7 frames per sec. Bah, doom3 runs alot better on my computer. Oh well, never liked the Delta Force games anyway...too bad, it was a good movie.

Maybe... Jan 9, 2003, 22:34

... I was a bit harsh, I have played a few DF games. This appears to be a step up in the graphics department. Maybe an advanced voxel engine?

A lot of what was pointed out earlier is correct. AI is laughable and the players movement feels cartoon-ish. Not to mention the sounds need to be reworked. The players weapon sounds as if it's a block away....

Overall it leaves me wishing the demo included a few more levels to get a better feel for the game. And it leaves me again thinking of a lot of possibility that was wasted. If they can tweak the gameplay(the players movements)and make it feel more realistic and less cartoon-ish. I may get it just so my friend and I will have another Co-op game to play.

Otherwise I will pick this one up in a few months(summer) when it's cheap and I am bored...

I've played quite a lot of multi-player first person shooters, and of them all, by a long shot, the best damned multi-player around was Delta Force 2. I could care less how good/bad the single-player AI is. TKOTH is where it's at, and that's what I'll be buying this game for.

Sorry if i stepped on any toes there. ;-)
I just think it's not that bad as the most of you guys say it is. Novalogic is the only gamedeveloper that puts a fairly quality inside the ballistics of a firearm.
I played dozen of other tactical shooters.
for instance i shoot at a target 800 meters away. the moment i pull the trigger the target gets hit. we'll you know like me that a bullit has a travel period..
they even code that the bullit after a fair distance is dropping. No other game is coded like this..
I think they should get a little more credit than what is given now! that's all.

This demo recommended that I run it at 1024x768. I've got a AMD XP2200+ and a GF4 Ti4200 64MB. When I let it run as it recommended, I was getting something like 8 fps. There's just something completely wrong with the recommended setting running at 8fps on a machine like this.

I turned it down to 640x480 and it then became playable. Died about 20 seconds after landing, three times. Haven't deleted it yet; I'll give it another shot some other time, but this was a bad first impression.

@21: You can't stand "collective whining"? Has it occurred to you that those with complaints actually have legitimate issues with the demo? Or are you simply discounting their voiced concerns simply because you don't personally share them? People are entitled to be disappointed - if they look forward to a game and discover it's not what they hoped it would be, they have every right to express their opinion on such. If a majority don't like it, are they automatically wrong because one other person DOES like it?

Ultimately, a demo is supposed to be a reflection of the final product - a "preview" of what to expect. If the demo doesn't attract people's interest in buying the full product, what's the point of releasing one at all? If a demo is released and it's full of problems, it's only natural that people who discover such be wary of the final product as a result. Money may grow on trees for some to freely splash out on bug-filled or mediocre games, but most people don't enjoy that luxury. They want quality for their cash.

Well zaq, i think you got a point there.
But i just can't stand collective whining..

Doom3 looks very nice, but i am curious ive the gameplay is in par with the graphics. I think it will be the same find key open door game..

Deus Ex2 is the one i am waiting for

Sorry to burst your bubble joen51. But I've played tons of demos and tons of games for the last 10 years, and here is my conclusion.

9/10 times when they say this isn't the final look/feel of the the game because it's just a beta or a demo... it ends up being the same when it comes out. It's deadlines vs gameplay, and since deadlines are usually the priority of the "higher-ups"... that's what takes precedence.

You are fooling yourself if you tink Black Hawk will be any better when released.

And why shouldn't the public get mad if the GFX aren't state-of-the-art?

I'm still on a p3 700 and an old GF2 gts for that very reason. No games out now need much higher, and those that do at the moment are just bloated peices of garbage that aren't worth my time.

Keeping my fingers crossed for doom3.

This is a demo. NOT FULLY FINISHED YET! means its not finished.
Saying that this is the same engine they used is earlier games explains to me the viewing capability of the whiner.
I played the demo and i say it rocked.. sorry guys i've i can't make up a compliant ;-)

The AI is atrocious. Too bad because the game otherwise has some great potential. Flying around on choppers and whipping around in hummers shooting them sumbitches is hella fun.
