Uru: Online Ages Beyond Myst to Begin Closed Beta Testing in January 2003 is the press release announcing that Uru: Online Ages Beyond Myst will be the title of the upcoming online Myst game, and that registration is currently underway to participate in the game's beta testing. Those interested can register for the beta on the game's official website, and here's a bit on the game, including the use of voice communication: "Uru will take advantage of broadband to deliver a continually updated, immersive environment and storyline, with content that grows, changes and evolves constantly. It will also be the first persistent world to support real-time voice communication. Uru is designed to appeal to a broad audience and enable players of all skill levels and interests to experience expansive ages of the Myst universe in a uniquely social environment. Playing their own avatars, hundreds of thousands of players will meet new people, all realistic impersonations of themselves, play games, solve mysteries and embark on a voyage of discovery with friends. Players will be able to customize their level of interaction with other players, choosing to play alone, with small groups of friends or in areas where they can meet new people." A batch of new screenshots and concept art accompany the announcement.

The complexity of the puzzles make the Myst games fun. I like getting stuck and having to shut off the game; it eats away at me until I get it, but it's more satisfying when you do solve the puzzle. I remember finishing Riven (probably the most challenging of the three) without any online help. Sometimes you just have to leave the game for a bit; the solutions manifest themselves eventually. The screenshots look very good, so I'll be interested to see how this one plays out.

graphics are looking pretty good, I wonder how it'll play...

#4, if you figured out the final number systems on your own in Riven? I'm astounded!

The graphics and environments look great. I've always loved the surrealistic and downright pretty worlds in the Myst games. It's too bad I hate the games themselves.

edit: ROFL Hyatus! That was hilarious.

Rolleyes at some comments..
I find this very refreshing to have at least something new in the MMOG genre.
Who said that Massively Multipalyers Online Games had to inevitably involve low-polygon knights in a more or less fantasy-related landscape fighting trolls endlessly? They're just games that are played online with a lot of people.. The Sims Online is the best proof of this.
Yay for diversity in tastes and in games!

Wow -- 8 posts and not one single person complaining about the Myst franchise and how "boring" and "cerebral" it is. Thank God there's a few folks out there who like using their brains in a game on occasion. I can't wait for this to come out.

Should have figured a game that actually takes brain power would puzzle you into wondering why would someone play it. But I don't expect you to understand! Mainly because it is too far out of your grasp and comprehension to understand and let alone to even have fun with. I on the other hand along with alot of other fellow beings, believe these types of games are very fun. They will immerse you into a new world where you are alone and secluded with peace and serenity void of the catastrophic world of todays online MMORPG's.

A) It will be an interesting departure from traditional MMORPG fare and show innovation and use the popular MYST Universe. It could have potential.

B) It's another publisher who sees the promise of charging $$$ every month and just tacks on a popular name (former best selling game of all time) and makes another crappy game, then wonders why no one likes it.

Are the original designers (any of them) working on this one?

I agree with you Schnapple, it *does* have possibilities...although the cynic in me does lean towards the screensaver scenario!

Would love to be proved wrong, it looks great!

"Wow -- 8 posts and not one single person complaining about the Myst franchise and how "boring" and "cerebral" it is."

My god, you're right.

I rented Myst years ago for the PSX(I have yet to see any
review mention any difference in gameplay and length between
this and the PC version(s)). I beat it overnight. Maybe
there's some significant changes in Riven and Exile I'm
unprivy to, but Myst was boring-as-all-hell. The only
reason I beat it was because I was a. bored and b. wanted
my 5 dollars worth.

I don't know why someone thought a MMO version of this game
would be fun, but then again, I don't understand the appeal
of the Myst and EQ franchises, so take that opinion with a
grain of salt.

Yes, it is being made by Cyan, the creators of Myst, Riven and RealMyst.
