Uru: Online Ages Beyond Myst to Begin Closed Beta Testing in January 2003 is the press release announcing that Uru: Online Ages Beyond Myst will be the title of the upcoming online Myst game, and that registration is currently underway to participate in the game's beta testing. Those interested can register for the beta on the game's official website, and here's a bit on the game, including the use of voice communication: "Uru will take advantage of broadband to deliver a continually updated, immersive environment and storyline, with content that grows, changes and evolves constantly. It will also be the first persistent world to support real-time voice communication. Uru is designed to appeal to a broad audience and enable players of all skill levels and interests to experience expansive ages of the Myst universe in a uniquely social environment. Playing their own avatars, hundreds of thousands of players will meet new people, all realistic impersonations of themselves, play games, solve mysteries and embark on a voyage of discovery with friends. Players will be able to customize their level of interaction with other players, choosing to play alone, with small groups of friends or in areas where they can meet new people." A batch of new screenshots and concept art accompany the announcement.

"It was a slideshow, and polls have shown that the vast majority of purchasers didn't make it past the second level. I doubt an online version would go all that far."

Don't know if you've been paying attention, but they did make two sequels which also made mountains of cash, so I imagine there were a few people who made it past the second level (there is no set second level, you choose your path). Goes without saying that I'm a huge fan of the franchise, and I imagine I'll play for a month or two, but they'll really have to blow my mind to keep me shelling out money every month. That goes for all MMORPGs, though.

No, but an ellipse is 3 dots. Ellipses are perfectly acceptable punctuation, whereas "alot" is acceptable nowhere. An ellipse, for those of you that don't know your grammar, is used to show an incomplete thought, or to end a sentence fragment.

Myst sold well to show off graphical capabilities in the early mid 90s. It was a slideshow, and polls have shown that the vast majority of purchasers didn't make it past the second level. I doubt an online version would go all that far.

#25 It's completely 3D and different from the slide show format, amazing that you bothered to type up a four paragraph rant without even reading the press release?

I enjoyed Riven, but it was ridiculously hard and not as rewarding as the other two titles. I still really enjoyed it, though. I highly recommend Myst III: Exile. The 360-degree panoramic view adds a lot to the game, and -- though it was made by an outside developer -- it managed to stay true to the original look and feel of Myst. It's probably my favorite of the trilogy.

I can understand why a lot of gamers don't care for the Myst franchise -- they're hardly a thrillride. But these games are so creative and visually rich that that I think it's a shame a lot of people judge them by the technology behind the games.

Yes now you too can click hotspots on stupidly rendered background images and turn your wildest dreams into a highly sophisticated game that requires alot of left and right turns. Now, as if the other mindless puzzles and annoying bullshit that so called "rpg's" try to feature nowadays was not enough, you can incessantly click levers, twist gears and do other mindless activities after this game has been thoroughly tested by a lab of monkeys descended from Project X.

What is so striking is the fact that the website is almost a carbon copy of what you will get. It is truly awesome how the site manages to capture the look and feel of playing this game. How did they do that!??? I mean, wow, click the book and you enter the online site of the Mystical Myst...ohh wow...

Myst: the worlds first online interactive....web page game thingy....Not only that we get the privelege, NAY let me say the honor, of using that quality UBI Soft game listing system, which we all know works so well for Ghost Recon.
"It will also be the first persistent world to support real-time voice communication."

Yes, I cant wait for this.

"Go left. No wait go right....no no no !!! RIGHT I said....awwwww fuck."

There is nothing like taking 1990 technology and repackaging it, charging people to buy it, and then hyping the hell out of it.

Will this one have gore or nudity? I hated how sanitized MYST was. I after I solved the Under Age and saved the teen cheerleader in distress, there was sex but it just faded away before I saw any in-out-in-out, didn't show anything. And then, in the Military Age level when you use the rocket launcher on civilians. No gore at all. Not even body parts flying out.

Is Riven good? I finally got around to playing my bro's old copy of myst on the ps about 6 months back, and was wanting to pick up the second and third installments. Would I be wasting my time?

UGH.

I am a Myst fan boi (w00t!), but even I was driven insane by Riven.

Wow -- 8 posts and not one single person complaining about the Myst franchise and how "boring" and "cerebral" it is.

Holy Crap! Myst Fanboys!

Just kidding really, Myst was one of the first games I played on my first 'real' PC. Still have the install CD around here somewhere.... now I gotta install the bugger.

Yes, it is being made by Cyan, the creators of Myst, Riven and RealMyst.

"Wow -- 8 posts and not one single person complaining about the Myst franchise and how "boring" and "cerebral" it is."

My god, you're right.

I rented Myst years ago for the PSX(I have yet to see any
review mention any difference in gameplay and length between
this and the PC version(s)). I beat it overnight. Maybe
there's some significant changes in Riven and Exile I'm
unprivy to, but Myst was boring-as-all-hell. The only
reason I beat it was because I was a. bored and b. wanted
my 5 dollars worth.

I don't know why someone thought a MMO version of this game
would be fun, but then again, I don't understand the appeal
of the Myst and EQ franchises, so take that opinion with a
grain of salt.

I agree with you Schnapple, it *does* have possibilities...although the cynic in me does lean towards the screensaver scenario!

Would love to be proved wrong, it looks great!

A) It will be an interesting departure from traditional MMORPG fare and show innovation and use the popular MYST Universe. It could have potential.

B) It's another publisher who sees the promise of charging $$$ every month and just tacks on a popular name (former best selling game of all time) and makes another crappy game, then wonders why no one likes it.

Are the original designers (any of them) working on this one?

Should have figured a game that actually takes brain power would puzzle you into wondering why would someone play it. But I don't expect you to understand! Mainly because it is too far out of your grasp and comprehension to understand and let alone to even have fun with. I on the other hand along with alot of other fellow beings, believe these types of games are very fun. They will immerse you into a new world where you are alone and secluded with peace and serenity void of the catastrophic world of todays online MMORPG's.
