It's all Derek Smart posting - each under a different one of his personalities? It would be the ultimate "daily affirmation," a way for Smart to tell himself "You the man!" and really believe it.

Given his megalomaniac tendencies, it's not improbable that he has a few spare personalities cached away in that big head of his.

This all reminds me of why OldManMurray liked to pick on him...and Roberta Williams, when it comes down to it. OMM's favorite Roberta Williams quote:

"Back when I got started, which sounds like ancient history, back then the demographics of people who were into computer games, was totally different, in my opinion, then they are today. Back then, computers were more expensive, which made them more exclusive to people who were maybe at a certain income level, or education level. So the people that played computer games 15 years ago were that type of person. They probably didn't watch television as much, and the instant gratification era hadn't quite grown the way it has lately. I think in the last 5 or 6 years, the demographics have really changed, now this is my opinion, because computers are less expensive so more people can afford them. More "average" people now feel they should own one."

Yup, a pretty sad thread really. You should check out some of the others, *really* depressing reading!

Although the US Army should check out some of those members on the board for possible super-soldier material, they've got some special kind of endurance skills to put up with so much crap

Yup nin, he's pretty pathetic really. A cult is right - Cult of the Ass.

I personally like the idea of the BC games (owned several) but wish somebody would take the idea and do it properly, hell I'd settle on somebody who can actually deliver what they say.

Classic Smart. They guy should change his surname.

Yeah, he's quite the ass...I like the way he decides to ban someone and his toadies run and do exactly what he says. After reading the 2 pages, it reminds me of a cult.

I can't believe people are dumb enough to stick up for this guy.

Read the guy's post, and then read Derek Smart's post about it, 2 posts down.

I hate Derek Smart. Not because of his lack of fulfilling promises, but he's a f*cking ass. No one likes Derek Smart. May he go to a place of many hells.

Of course, if you read the posts further down, the only worse than Derek Smart is his stupid ass fanboi's who are worried they will be banned from his precious forums.

It just hurts to read it.

Shut the f*ck up, no one asked you. Last I checked, it was a free country and people can post what they wish, except for you two twits

Two? I think you missed the irony of Dr. Del's post.

And if it's a free country, why should they shut the f*ck up? And why should they need asked before they post? For that matter, who asked you? Or me?

One thing I can say for Derek Smart. He gets publicity. What other game has the profile of BC? Let's take the first I think of ... Car Tycoon. Got a few (generally mediocre, leaning towards bad) reviews. Now no-one bar a few fans gives damn. Who wrote that? God knows. Probably about 50 people in the world do and few of those really care. Who wrote that £5 space cruiser you'll see on the cheap shelves very occasionally? Why, that would be Derek Smart. For better or worse, people know his name.

Cheers,

It came from the first release fiasco and when Derek was defending himself on Newgroups. That's where it all started. People couldn't fathom that a developer won't take the stupid shit that the gaming community dishes out on a continuous basis.

No, he seems to like taking that shit on a continuous basis. Most sensible developers are above getting into that kind of slanging match, which is pretty much the only reason he is so well known online and offline noone knows who the hell he is.

Argh, sometimes learning something new can be a bad thing. ent to that flame war follies site, and was pretty much appalled at what i read. I really hadn't known much about Derek Smart or anything, but after having read several articles there and at some of the other posted links, I was quite alarmed that someone could be that, well, hypocritcal and inconsitent, to say the least. How long has this been going on for?

Usenet? I tried searching google and came up with a lot of posts about him. Anybody know of a location that I can go to to read his responses?

Sure, at http://groups.google.com/, just search for author:derek smart and his posts will come up. His responses all seem coherent and mild, however, considering all the personal attacks he was enduring (although he certainly does not have a phd from an accredited institution judging by his and other posts.). Most of his real gems come from support forums, where he tells customers that he doesn't care about them, their opinions, or their problems--nothing really all that interesting in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic (google apparently doesn't have the cache for the bc2k group, unfortunately).

@23 there was at one point a website dedicated to keeping the gems, the link I had doesn't work now - I get a 404 - however, did find these:

http://www.pathcom.com/~kenl/dsquotes.htm (DS quotes)

http://www.ivic.cncdsl.com/cyberstalker/pages/lawltr.html (the lawsuit - not sure if thats real or a hoax though)
