Battlecruiser Q&A

CanadianGamer.ca's Derek Smart Q&A Part I is the first installment in a multi-part conversation with the 3000AD founder. Topics include some reflections on the gaming industry, the makeup of 3000AD, reasons for forming an independent company in an industry filled with giants, and his experiences getting games published. They have posted an accompanying batch of Battlecruiser Generations Screenshots.

"and his experiences getting games published".. yeah.. yeah.. yeah.

I've been hearing about Derek's "experiences" since 1995 or 96.

"BC 2000 was a POS; but it wasn't MY fault!"

"No one respects me!" .. "uhhh.. because I'm BLACK! Yeah.. that's it.. because I'm black." ..sheeesh.. ;-)

"I AM god! (Oh wait.. no.. just the "Supreme Commander"}"

Blah.. blah.. blah. Waaah.. waaah.. waaah.

I REALLY wish this "over-stuffed "super-ego" of a shirt" would fade away.. kinda' like John Romero (What ever happened to John anyway? ;-) .. never mind.. I really do know.).

Second chance Derek? NO friggin' way. I still have a $50 door-stop sitting in my closet.

that about sums it up. I can only assume that in a few days he'll hit his favorite Usenet haunts and start blathering incoherently again.

That mustve been an interview I missed. One can accuse Derek of a lot of things but I've never seen/read about him playing the race card.

I hope he comes here and posts some red-faced defensive babbling. Derek has a tendency to come to message board topics about himself.

Actually Derek has found an accepting home over at Tom Chicks site "Quarter To Three" forums:

http://www.quartertothree.com/phpBB2/index.php

I'm not a big fan of his games but his insights into the industry are pretty interesting.

Actually he seems to be "blathering" coherantly in this interview. Interesting read and he avoids the obvious temptation to flame people. Try reading it before you judge it.

He's been posting this kind of "I am the greatest" crap for over 15 years now, you'd think he'd get kind of bored with it or something?

"One thing is certain, I'll be right here with my niche titles, long after they've all faded from memory. It. Is. Inevitable"

Yes Dereck, the whole world agrees that your games (gameS? Has he ever done anything besides that BattleCruiser garbage?) are the Best. Fucking. Games. Ever.
How weird then that nobody buys them, huh?
He actually sees his sad devotion to his rather unappealing game as some kind of Uber MainStay Power, when everybody else says its simply a case of not knowing when to quit.

Whatever,,,

You may not like the guy.. Fine.. But I own BCM and its a magnificient Game. Sure the graphics are not the greatest. But it is hands down the Deepest, most entertaining Space Sim I have ever played.

So keep you dumbass *i have never actually played the game, I just post stupid @#$&* coments to yourself. And for your information.. BCM is selling VERY well. Do you really think that he could support his family, and small team of full time developers if he were Bankrupt all the time?? BC games sell like hot cakes over seas.. and pretty well in the states. Thats what he means by Nitch market fool. While the big game companies make one rehashed crap title after the next, he services an Audience of Gamers who really love a great Space *sim*.. Note .. moron.. that Nitch market means that not *everyone* is into that style of game.... BUT those that are .. STAY.

I swear.. some of you creeps are just plain Stupid..

What makes you think that Derek's only income is from BCM? Fact is you dont, so shut up.

And in the future if you're going to start calling people moron's how about learning to spell "nitch".

If Hellbinder has to learn to spell, you have to learn English syntax and grammar BabyJesus. Fair is fair.

*edit* And as for Creston, well he heeds to relax and read without preconceptions. Yes, Derek Smart can be irritating, but he's fairly mild in this interview. Why not wait until he posts something obnoxious and then rant, rave and vent about him. It would make more sense that way.

I seriously doubt that #11. Last time I heard, Derek was boasting an amazing "over 60k sold". That's hardly selling like hot cakes.

over 60k sold

First of all that was a while back. His last title BC V2.0 sold about 230,000 copies over about 24 months. Wich is really awesome for a Small Indie title.

Sure 60 thousand titles is not great for a Mass market big budget game. But is IS great for a Nitch title. Some of you simply seem incapable of understanding the concept of a Small Indy developer and what its needs are. This is the exact kind of mentality that is totally RUINING the game industry, and is what has brought us to one rehashed half-assed game being released after the next. No new ideas, no really deep interesting games. Why? because people like YOU and the black suits in charge are only interested in Ferraris.

If BCM sells 200,000 units at an average of 29.99... guess what. Thats.. right at 6 million in revenue. hell 60,000 copies at the current retail price of 49.99.. thats nearly 3 million. All for a team of 6 full time developers,, working out of their homes.. some living in Europe.

Can't you guys open your eyes just a little? and see the big picture? Of just how cool it could be if there were a lot more of these little guys, not wantign to drive 10 ferarris, all making totally origional, unique.. great playing gmaes? Like the mmorpg lineage for instance.. Which is now freaking HUGE, but the graphics are 2d.

Fairly hostile, I'd say. No thanks.

Yes, I matched the spelling of his nickname. I couldn't recall his exact spelling while typing a reply to your post insulting him and correcting his English. So glad you are not from an English speaking country btw. Lay off other peoples usage of the language and maybe nobody else will bring up yours.

*edit* Oh, and "daft"... really your insults need work.
