@33 - according to the www.3000AD.com website you need to run the setup.exe in compat' mode for Win98 in XP to get the installer to work. After that you should be okay.

I just downloaded the BCM Hi quality demo, and (running Win XP Pro here) I tried to install it and it says "The operating system is not adequate for running Battlecruiser Millennium Demo"

what a joke. (and yes, my system specs are MORE than adequate.)

haha that would be cool if he got a guy to mars. And i would have to say he has influenced computer gaming more than any other individual.

I guess the good side though, about how saturated the gaming market is... is all the NEW talent that will be working on computer games, now that is a actual career.

Hopefully the ongoing expansion in the abilities of computers and graphics will keep Carmack interested. I remember seeing something in an interview in which he thought they could achieve real time photorealistic graphics within about 5 years. If that's his goal he might be one engine away, as I gather the Doom III engine is supposed to last about that long (in terms of it's ongoing development and licensing). Maybe the engine after that will be his "Holy Grail".

We all know he doesn't care about games and game design really, but he has continued to build game engines (if not the best ever every time). He can quit and retire at any time. But he doesn't. "

I don't actually remember where I read it, but it would seem that Carmack is going to make one more game engine after the Doom 3 engine, and is then going to quit as he (in his own words) "has solved the same problems in games (ie creating engines etc) 20 times over, and is looking for some new challenges".

It will be a sad day when John stops making engines, but who knows, perhaps his own space agency will be the first to get a guy on Mars

But he is correct about how the industry has gone to hollywood. Now all you see are games just designed to make money and thats it. Ideally it should be the other way around, but that will never happen.

And even at times, the Indy devs, if they make a game and get rich thats it, money goes to there head....

um bungiee anyone? lol perfect example.
(consoles game sells are like 4x more than computer sales...)

um look at valve. They release half life. they get mad rich. They plan on TF2 and HL2. and whatever else. But then cs comes along. Takes valve a lil while to figure it out, but they realize they can make money off this mod. And they do, and the cs edition sells more than the original HL.And they are still making money off cs. Then you see TF2 never coming out.... And they release 2 addons to the game just to make more money. And where is HL2? are they evening working on that?

And its like what are they doing now? they are all fucking rich as fuck? How old is Half-life and since when did that same team make a new game? they don't need too since they made so much money. But will they keep making games or retire at 30 years old? Or make a game in the next 5 years once they run out of money and need more? if they run out of money.

The only person that money hasn't got to is john carmack and other few developers. I mean how rich is he??? but he keeps writing game engines. We all know he doesn't care about games and game design really, but he has continued to build game engines (if not the best ever every time). He can quit and retire at any time. But he doesn't.
And how most companies will buy his engines over lithtech.
I mean come on DIRECTX sucks compared to opengl period. But with DX9 maybe that will all change.

Anyone remember the good old days, dos, all those games? totaly addicting... fun and rad.. When the market was lame as hell and people were making games because they wanted 2. now its like people makes games to put on the shelf....
And maybe your lucky when you find a good game. BF1942 in my opinion is probably one of the better new games, but it still comes short because imo for a few reasons.

Right now all your seeing is tactical shooter clones now...
because of the success of Counter-Strike.

remember all the warcraft 2 clones. omg over 50 RTS games being developed at one time...

But yeah that is how the market goes. Someone makes a kick ass game, then you see like 10-50 clones come out that are simliure to it, to make money. Kinda like how the mexican channel rips off all the american shows, but does a really crappy job rofl. But i guess that is cool because hopefully we will see some BF1942 clones (full terrain and vehicle battle online games)
If there is anything really cool about bf1942 its going to be the mods. I was planning on starting one but im lazy... :(.
and why the fuck am i wasting my time writing this.....

Heh. And spelling isn't a part of language usage? Oooh... you've graduated to "turdmuffin", I'm impressed. Much more American sounding. And juvenile. You disagreed with someone elses post and rather than discuss it reasonably you insulted his English. And got called on it. Normally I don't worry about peoples English usage outside the classroom, especially on the internet, but I think you needed to see how irritating that petty tactic is. Get it yet?

Creston: I noticed the quote, but your post just seemed an overreaction to what he actually said. *shrug* I guess you have your reasons. If he irritates you that much you still need to relax though I don't think he's worth a stroke...

Hellbinder,

Perhaps you were unaware that Derek already 'owned' millions before he ever started in the gaming industry, and that it's these millions that are supporting him and his crowd of 19 freelance guys. Notice that these guys are being paid for the work they deliver, iow, it's not like he's paying them 100K a year (presumably).

Oh, and no 13, when you suggest that I read an interview first, it would have helped if you had noticed that I actually quoted a section from that interview. Kinda hard to do that without reading it, right?

Sure, he frames it without the curses, rants, flames and other stuff he's become notorious for, but to me, underneath this minor coating of civility it's still the "My Games Fucking Rock And The Rest Of The Industry Fucking Sucks" crap that he's been spewing for years.

Which is my opinion, last I checked I was still allowed to have one in this country

What a totally pointless comment....

No.. Its about the fact that you guys need to respect the indie Developers more. For the Incredible battle they put up, just to stay alive. Soley to produce cool, and interesting games.

Is there even one other indie developer in the entire world you can name? or what games have they produced? i can name a few because I pay attention to stuff like this. You may not like Derek Smart, but imagine where his company would be if he was not the totally Cocky, Terrel Owensish, Outspoken, Dude he is.

Hell, i get pissed off at him all the time for is Slaming of Ati all the time. I have gotten into HUGE flame wars with the guy at Beyond3d. But that does not mean that i dont like his game, or the guys perseverance in a tough industry.

Fairly hostile, I'd say. No thanks.

Yes, I matched the spelling of his nickname. I couldn't recall his exact spelling while typing a reply to your post insulting him and correcting his English. So glad you are not from an English speaking country btw. Lay off other peoples usage of the language and maybe nobody else will bring up yours.
