Out of the Blue

"That's just the beat of time-the beat that must go on. If you been trying for years-then we already heard your song." Death or Glory (Strummer/Jones). More than any prior celebrity passing I can recall, I am shaken by the death of Joe Strummer. The Clash came about as close as anyone could to living up to the hype of being "the only band that matters" in their day, and by pulling the plug on the band in 1985 so shortly after jumping the shark in 1982, managed to live up to their own wisdom on the subject of rock longevity. I'm not sure The Clash weren't one of those 'had to be there' kind of things, so I don't imagine this means too much to anyone born after their moment in the sun, but for those of us who were there, I'd say the passing of Joey Ramone and Joe Strummer within so short a time of each other marks the end of an era.

Today, of course, is Christmas Eve for those who celebrate (and I guess even for those who don't), so allow me to pass along all due well-wishing on the occasion, I hope you have a happy safe holiday, and that Santa brings you everything you are hoping for.

Great to know that you listened to The Clash and The Ramones too, Blue. For some reason I didn't have you pegged as a punk rock kind of guy. Missed several chances to see the Ramones but I saw the Clash (without Mick Jones) twice, once opening for The Who.
It's sad to know that bands like Blink 182 and Sum-whatever now represent punk to much of the listening public out there. Oh well. Some of us know different.

I'll never forget the first time I listened to the LP London Calling. The music and lyrics of The Clash changed my perception of what I thought rock & roll was. 20 years later I still listen regularly to The Clash. I suspect I will break out every Clash/Joe Strummer album/CD I have. I will listen but I will be very sad.

$20c says that the probe is some type of camera. My pity to any woman foolish enough to volunteer for something like this.

As for the featherless chickens, that's actually for their benefit. Gets pretty hot in the middle east.

Edit: Hey Blues, I think you should add the "?" after "sick". At first I thought it was an article on A.I.

There probably wasn't a band that had more impact on my youth than The Clash. I still have the vinyl of "Give 'em Enough Rope" and "London Calling"

I'd like to say something profound on how much their music was a part of my teens/early twenties but Blue, as usual, hit the nail on the head perfectly.

At least this rules out the possibility of there ever being a reunion again (this isn't meant to be a glib statement either)

Damn Blue, I was all ready to congratulate you for taking a day off. Oh well, I can't complain when you do an update...

Hope everyone that posts here has a safe one the next few days. If you're like me and in the midwest, it's a bit snowy right now.

and that Santa brings you everything you are hoping for

Somehow, I don't see myself finding a copy of Doom3 and a geforceFX card under the tree tomorrow morning, but dammit, I can dream!
