Splinter Cell Demo

In a surprise, the PC version of the Splinter Cell Demo is now available this evening, rather than tomorrow, as planned. The 101 MB file offering a sample of the stealthy third-person gameplay of the upcoming PC version of this Tom Clancy game is available from 3D Gamers, AusGamers, FilePlanet (registration required), FileShack (registration required), Gamer's Hell, and Worthplaying.

I have an AMD 2100+, 512MB DDR RAM, and a 128MB Geforce4 Ti4600. I'm on the 41.03 drivers, as they're the highest drivers that I can use that will still let me play DVDs on my PC. (For some reason, with any drivers above 41.03, when I try to play a DVD under InterActual or PowerDVD, it will say "The TV out port is not working properly.")

Well, with Splinter Cell, some shadows (like those on Blaustein and Madison's bodies) look buggy and blurry, and sometimes I can see lights through walls and doors.

"Just fooled around with it and it runs great on my system.

More specifically, screw the Xbox version!.

I am using XP (home), an Athlon XP 2100, and a 4600 (drivers 41.09).

Can I have a w00t? Heck, a chugga, chugga, w00t, w00t for that matter.

Noting that it even plays decently with my Wingman Cordless,
Ray"

Now go fetch me Gran Turismo 3 and Dead Or Alive 3.

Here's something fun to try with the demo if you think it's too easy: Try to get through the whole level without touching anyone with your hands or shooting them. I'll give you one hint: bottles.

i accepted that challenge.. did it on normal dificulty for starters.. i'll try the harder setting later..

definately gets your heart beating playin it that way.. and definately played through using trial and error.. trying to figure out how to get past each section without getting shot at or touching/shooting anyone..

there was one close call where i alerted someone to my presense then just crouch-ran to a dark corner and backed against the wall.. the guy walked within inches of me, then decided to let someone else handle it..hehe

the only time i ended up using a can, and believe me, i tried using it in many instances.. but the only time i actually used it was to distract the guy from computer at the end.. i had just enough time to check out the computer then run back to the dark corner...

i've got one little nitpick about this game.. those goggles are pretty easy to see being lit up and stuff...even when i am in pitch dark shadow.. you'd think the enemies would see those goggles gloing and at least investigate.. but nay.. ah well... its minor

Splinter Cell (which is far more fun on the couch with a big screen and 5.1 BTW ).

I just tried the PC demo last night and I was amazed at how crisp the graphics looked when compared to the XBOX version. I do prefer the XBOX version mainly becuz of its movement controllers while the PC's has better aiming. To me, movement is the most important of all. I did notice a few expected graphical shadow issues in the PC version though.

Meh, to each his own d00d. I'm currently just as good in UC with the duke xbox controller as I am in UT on my PC. It really didn't take long to adapt. But I digress, this should be about Splinter Cell (which is far more fun on the couch with a big screen and 5.1 BTW ).

I typically do my best to ignore trolls and resist responding but, I really like your idea. Since I gather Blue is against banning individuals (understandable) why not offer the user the option to block individuals much like you can block email from specific senders? Anyone else feel like this is a good idea?

I would say DX9...most games do not properly support it yet and little glitches like that are bound to come up until full, non-beta drivers are released and game developers have made the switch.

Simply not the case. I was having the same problem prior to downloading DX9.

Hey #42 are you insane?

We are consumers and pay money for this crap. We shouldn't need to play on such an inferior device as a console controller. In FPS's, there is no contest as to which one's better. It has nothing to do with being old school.

regarding:

People touting mouse look over console controllers are such dinosaurs. Get over it. If you're a gamer, you adapt. I haven't even noticed in years. Console games, PC games. They're all good.

BTW I agree, console games are good. But don't defend the controller. It's a piece of plastic you paid good money for. XBox's is particularly bad.

Do the hostage trick on the fat guy near the morgue with the laptop thing on his chest. If you hit the use key, Sam will interrogate him and get some cool conversation going on. Try interrogating him again after you find the bodies, I like the lines:

Sam: Who is Gaishi?
Man: He'll kill you!!
Sam sticks gun closer to man's ear
Sam: Oh really.

One thing I don't like about the demo is that you're forced to pistol whip your hostages. Sometimes I just want to shoot him clean through the ear and out the other side, maybe to shock the police watching you nervously.

Oh ya, stealth is where it's at with this game. I seldomly shoot anyone, it's a last resort. Try getting past the guys upstairs at the computers by shimmying along the pipe on the ceiling. Or playing mind games with them by flipping the light switch.

The best part of this game is being able to decide if you want to save at a checkpoint or not. Usually, if I'm not entirely pleased with my performance up to that point or if, after the fact, I realize I could have done something a lot more cleanly I say no. Replaying parts of levels is actually even more fun than the first time around. Great game.

The night of it's release I got through the demo so fast I was let down. But I tried it again last night... and the beauty of this game like some of the other Clancy titles(Ghost Recon especially) is that you are rewarded for thinking.

First time through I just went straight for the throat killing everybody with the pistol. Second time I started playing with the interactive items and shooting out bulbs and sneaking up on people. I had ten times more fun.

So like Ghost Recon, if you slow down, watch the enemy and use stealth, then ambush them... your enjoyment will increase immensely.

My favorite part was as I sat in shadows a guard rounded the corner. I shot out the light above him. He turned to look at it and said, "Oh, my god. What the...", then his limp body dropped to the floor. The fun of this game will be finding new ways to take out the enemy. I'll try the hands off approach tonight, thx.

edit: Somebody please tell me that Sam has the use of a knife at some point in this game.

This game is AWESOME. I have a Gforce 4 TI 4600 and a 1.5 amd and it runs smooth with quinquix...2x fsaa. I notice that there are some small texture problems and that the hughs of lights dont fade behind solid objects. Anyone else have this problem? I wonder if its because I installed DX 9 or if its my drivers for my card ( I have the latest), or if its just the game itself in a premature state.
