Vietcong Multiplayer Demo

A multiplayer demo for Vietcong, the upcoming Vietnam War shooter from Illusion Softworks has been released on the game's official website, and in spite of a completely swamped FTP server, has finally been mirrored by Worthplaying, and is now reasonably available. The description for the 72 MB demo is simply: "Death Match, Capture the Flag, Protect the Pilot up to 32 Players," and presumably now more mirrors will begin to appear. Update: The file is now mirrored on 3D Gamers, Gamer's Hell, Tiscali Games, and FileShack (registration required).

I must say this game looks very good compared to what I had expected. The terrain is convincing, and the environment is big. It gives you the ability to use the different weapons to their advantage. SMG's arent really much good in the open. I think the character models, as well, are better than expected. The eyes blink, they have normal human proportions, and the leaning is very realistic. Weapon-wise, you get a nice balance, and the M16/AK47 is not necessarily the best. The SKS is surely more accurate at medium/long range, and the Garand simply rules. They SMG's are good in tight too.

All in all, its a fun game, comperable to Global Operations, which was a fun good game, although it had a small following. It would be cool to see some maps with buildings and jungle (maybe rice paddies where u could semi submerge), and maybe an M 60 or M79 :P.

I remember seal team. it was a great game! but if you really liked seal team, you should rather try operation flashpoint. coupled with the nam pack2, its almost the same feeling as seal team, if not better.

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

I like it. Its on my list of games to get. There are a few glitches of course (if you are inclined, try setting the amounts of people to 20 rather than 32), like its is impossible to turn around fast when in the prone postion. Some of those tree trunks are really hard to try and climb and I think the 'hit' pattern for rounds that it takes to die is set a little high, other wise it is a breath of fresh air to not be fighting WW2.

ive learned not to trust peoples opinions of games nowadays, because it seems, most people are jaded to what a good game is, and people just like to say everything sucks.

so i tried the demo, this is a great change from all the ww2 FPSes, and i think this could be a really memorable game. the guns are VERY well done, nicely textured, and fun to use, i really like the environments, that and the crisp sound effects really add to the gameplay. this game just feels good to me, firefights in this game are so unique and fun, its scary to run around the jungle. this game has balls. i give the demo 4 1/2 balls.

Yeah the pings in my local area seem to be 80-100. It's do-able but I'm sure dedicated servers will improve this a lot.

As for gameplay/fun factor. I remember the first few screenshots for this game were an eyebrow raiser, but I didnt really follow the game's progress. Now after a few hours play this title is high on my must-have list. It reminds me of a great game a few years ago called Seal Team. Not many will remember that game Finally technology has advanced enough to do what that game could not accomplish.

I cannot wait to see the other maps and A.I.
It's going to be a sizzling start to 2003 with all these great titles being released.

Anybody figured out how to run a dedicated server without having to load up the game itself? If this is not possible then don't expect to see any good servers anytime soon. A console-based dedicated server is a must (linux would be good too).

not a bad demo ( and I HATE everything ) FPS could use some smoothing to get rid of the "nausea" effect...aim toggle , grenades dont need to be a 2 button push ( pull the pin , release when ready !) tweak some sounds , clipping , a GUI would be nice , and maybe some cammo for the VC and i think it could be a keeper...also i love the "my game rules --your a dick for liking that sh1t" flaming mentality this always disintegrates into...(SOF II had the best jungle levels EVER in colombia !)...and yeah , that "Nightfire" demo was a fucking joke !

It's the same type of guitar playing, but it's not Little Wing. My favorite version of Little Wing is probably SRV's though.

The VC tune is based on a Hendrix song called 'Little Wing'

Sting does a nice cover of this song.

Are you playing in 800x600? I experienced the same thing (/me cleans up the puddle of cornflakes next to the chair)

Switch to 1024x768, it improved things a lot for me.
Now only to find a stable server without team killers shooting me in the back.

the music is original, by the devs music engineer Petr Mores, is inspired by Hendrix but not a direct copy of anything he did.

its pretty. nice graphics and they are pretty fast for that grade too! I got stuck quite often, so the map should be tweaked a bit more. I didnt like some gun sounds like the M16 (too quiet and calm). and some keys should really be toggle ones like the aim key, lay down key and even the duck key since you rely a lot on cover in these jungle maps. it really hurts my fingers when I lay down behind some bush (holding down the key) and have to hold down ANOTHER key for aiming and then press ANOTHER key for firing. thats just plain stupid.

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

Jimi never released a song called Butterfly. The VC tune is based on a Hendrix song called 'Little Wing'

Belly Flop: Don't need to be old to listen to Jimi
