Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Preview

The Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Preview on GameSpy discusses progress on the upcoming single-player focused Counter-Strike game, which recently shifted production from Gearbox Software to Ritual Entertainment. Based on a visit to Valve Software to see the game first-hand, they also make some inquiries about the developer shift, eliciting this response: "Gearbox has completed its contribution to Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and Ritual will be running the day-to-day development responsibilities from here through launch" (though their own impressions seem to contradict this: "After checking out Condition Zero, it's quite obvious that Ritual has basically started from scratch"). The article goes on to describe changes in the upcoming version 1.6 Counter-Strike patch before offering impressions of gameplay, including the interface, the kinds of scenarios included, weaponry, AI, graphics, special effects, and more.

Are you aware of the work it takes to write a new engine from scratch? A hell of a lot. They are working on the "Valve Engine" for HL2, TF2 and CS2. It takes a lot, not to mention the story/script writing, game design, textures, themes et cetera.....

Be patient, they'll let us know when they are ready, I'm not going anywhere and neither are you. Play Natural Selection, that's good stuff, play other games, it doesn't matter because before you know it we'll have a crapload of new screenshots for their new project(s).

I for one am excited. People like to dog Valve and talk about how they can't code, using the HL engine as an example. Well that's a bad example, hacking an engine up can make things run pretty bad for anyone. Stats on their new renderer should be interesting. I'm excited to see what they'll have in store to compete with iD, Epic and Lithtech.

(I type the following in a friendly and non-confrontational manner, and with all due respect to BRM...)

I complain because, unless you play a lot of multiplayer, those 3 + mods don't mean jack. Half-Life was originally known for it's great single player mode, and that's what a lot of people want Valve to do again. And other than the "They Hunger" series (which wasn't Valve), I'm drawing a blank...

So where's the new game?!

>>> Jesus, for a company that released one fo the greatest games of all time Valve has nonetheless managed to make themselves look like fools repeatedly since.

That pretty much sums up my opinion of them...

I keep having flashbacks to an Eddie Murphy skit (can't remember if it was in Raw or Delirious) about "WAHT HAV YOU DONE FOR ME LAT-LY EDDDDIE?!" And that's pretty much Valve. They keep milking Half-Life and they keep putting out patches with small enhancements, but I want to know where the new GAME is?

I cant believe how people can actually complain like this.. Half-life is fully supported and updated over 4 years after the initial release, and valve has through its strong support of mods and by making 3 mods themselves(!) managed to GIVE AWAY 10 times the content of the original game that i bought 4 years ago, most games from that period are just old games that cant offer more extras than an old homepage with broken links, come on guys you spent like 40$ on this game FOUR YEARS AGO, and you basically have valve software working every day to provide new, free content for your game ever since. This is what sets HL apart from every other game in history, and to me its really fine if they dont release TF2 or CS2 or whatever, until they have "milked" half-life of another 500 mb of free good content. Good games takes time to make and why would YOU want them to focus on a new retail game if they GIVE you 5 new games for free. Half-Life sales are increasing every year(according to Valve, i read it somewhere) So its a win-win sitiuation. As for new update I would rather quote Homer Simpson and just say keep'em coming and point at the table infront of me..

I could be totally wrong, but from some of the previews from way back when, it seemed like Gearbox was essentially done with this game. It seemed feature complete and like they were just shining it up. All in all, the shift to a new developer seems a bit odd, of course we're talking about Valve so that isn't surprising. The dead horse is losing shape due to the endless beating. Please move on.

Jesus, for a company that released one fo the greatest games of all time Valve has nonetheless managed to make themselves look like fools repeatedly since.

I would imagine that many other gaming companies look upon those 'fools' with envy. Name 4 other companies that could spend that much time in R&D (if that is what they are doing) and still be solvent. And no, 3DR doesn't count, they are too obvious to name.

I really enjoyed HL and TFC. They lost me with CS mainly because of the cheating and my lack of time to find a clan. I hope that somewhere they are working on a new game. The media blackout is a real bummer.

I don't think those player models look as good as the ones Gearbox had. Also, I like botmatch single player games better than linear story driven single player games so this change does not sound good to me. They do say in this preview that there will be some bots though, so maybe we will get both? Who knows anymore. Maybe they will surprise us. It looks like the game will sell at bargan price range so it should do well.

I don't think they will include the graphic content that Gearbox created because then they will have to include them in the royalty payments. It works the same way in music, If we get someone to play a bass part on the album but then he is booted, we have to redo the bass part so he does not get a piece of the action even if his part sounded the best. Seems like the game industry works just like the music business with all the drama and egos clashing. Teams create free mods in the hopes of getting in the business or "signed" just like bands create demos and the publishers are evil just like the record companies.

Bit scary at Ritual starting from scratch - if for no other reason that the pure amount of wasted cash.

It's the same engine, with a few enhancements including new explosion/particle effects, volumetric smoke & specular lighting effects.

I'm not able to read the preview since I'm at work, but just out of curiosity did the engine change? If so, I would say this might be half interesting. I don't care much for CS, but I can't seem to get enough of DOD.

I am SO looking forward to this game, I haven't played CS for eons!

I'm going to speculate that the reason that production was shifted to ritual from gearbox for this reason:

So, where Gearbox's version of Condition Zero played more like a multiplayer simulator, Ritual's version truly plays like a single-player game.

Ritual are currently amongst the leaders of single-player game development, and I think that Valve really wants to reach the largest possible audience with this one--after all, isn't it time that they started earning some new money? (Surely the sales of Half-Life must be tapering off by now)

Something else that comes to mind though, is that it seems as though Ritual has been given the keys to the entire CS franchise... I wonder where Gooseman and the rest of the original CS team are going to fit in after this?

Anyway, here's hoping we don't have to wait too long for the new release.

So in essence what we DON'T know:

Why Ritual has taken over from Gearbox; internal politics is always so darn obscure. I'd love to know the *real* reason though

What we DO know:

-In CS1.6 patch will be available before CZ hits the stores.

-The patch will have new weapons and maps, but the hi-poly characters / textures will have to wait till April

-New items being added: a blowtorch, a camera, and radio-controlled bombs! Wow, sounds pretty good.

"we've added stuff like shooting from around corners, jumping around corners, shooting while diving or shooting while jumping through a window."

I dont know about you, but that sounds like PR bullsh*&t to me, we shall see. If true, weeeeheeeee.

And if 1.6 finally does arrive, it will be worth it, even just to witness the noob revolution that day 1 brings. (because hax dont worx suddenly)

It is a download I am really looking forward to...
