Playboy Game Unveiled

ARUSH Entertainment announces that production is underway on a game that sounds like it could be titled "Playboy Tycoon" (of course, you'll only play it for the articles). Here's the deal:
The first Playboy- branded game, which will be playable on multiple platforms including PC, Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox consoles, is targeted to be in stores in 2004.

The game, which is based on the world-builder simulation genre of video games, will allow players to walk in the slippers of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, establishing and building the Playboy empire and living the ultimate Playboy lifestyle.

There's so many jokes that could be made off this press release, it isn't even funny. Who's the marketing goon who came up with this one?

Maybe I'm jaded, but I can't specifically remember a time where I thought "Gee, wouldn't it be cool if someone came up with a RTS and you played the part of Hugh Hefner? I bet that would be a BIG seller!"

Maybe ARUSH Entertainment will do us all a favor and go out of business before "late 2004".

Well it's not like they haven't merged in the past, i.e.

Not to mention the onslaught of porno games on CD-ROM from the early 1990's that currently gather dust on a Hasting's shelf.

To say nothing of BMX XXX which will be censored on PS2 but not GameCube or XBox.

Gaming will survive. Bad taste will, too, apparently.

That was a great game. It was a horror game although it had some adult content too. The way it made you feel like you were going crazy that was just excellent!

From my post on a different message board, that applies here--:

Well, all I can say is that this is not going to be a raunchy game or a cash grab.

Ya, I know you've heard it all before, but we want to create something that is fun to play first and foremost. It will be sexy, yeah, but it won't be IN YOUR FACE OH MY GOD ITS SEX DID YOU HEAR ME SEX!! You know what I mean? It will be a game, a quality game. Although it is faaaar too early to tell, the game will likely be rated M, probably not T. This isn't boobs on skateboards, or some other attempt to pit poly breasts with an entirely unrelated topic. Will there be boobs? Probably...will boobs be the hook of the game? No...the game will be the hook.

Take that with whatever measurement of salt you prefer when biting off a chunk of publisher comments, but truly we aren't going to be trying to sell shock and sex...we plan to create a quality game with a quality license. This isn't Juggs or Black Tail the game...Playboy is classy, as this game will be.

D-Dogg,

What's your target audience?

Exactly how many copies do you think will sell?

Are you aware that certain retailers WILL NOT stock your game, based on content? (Have you followed the whole BMXXX controversy and retailers response?)

Exactly. If the game is the hook, they don't need the Playboy licence anyway.

Of course some of that can't be responded to for biz reasons-numbers projected....

Demographic is pretty broad but is definitely an 18 and older, mostly male audience. This ain't a FPS...but it's targeted to a mainstream audience.

Of course a major challenge will be that certain retailers will have issue with content, but then again content is not finalized.

Hey, I was suprised that Blockbuster rented BMXXXX, given they don't rent NC-17 movies. Apparantly they understand the ESRB's ratings system and that M doesn't mean X. That's pretty good...we actually watched the BMXXXX phenomenon closely as we had already put this concept in Playboy's hands before BMXXXX started getting headlines. Their experience applies in some ways, and doesn't in others.

Will there be controversy? Probably, simply due to the license itself...but we aren't interested in pushing the envelope and getting a bad-boy vibe to the game. Some may see Playboy as pr0n, but others see it differently. Think what you will, I'm just saying don't think this is gonna be SEX SEX SEX because it is a Playboy game. This isn't going to be an AO tittilating extravaganza...it's going to be a video game. It may not be your cup of tea, and that's fine...hopefully others will enjoy it.

Of course, you realize Walmart won't carry it, and they're only one of the biggest game sellers in the US. Companies change game content just to please Walmart (which is sad).

Playboy sucks anyway imo. The articles are boring and the women are so fake they look stupid. Maxim (including Stuff and Blender) is 100 times better even without the full nudity.

He cut the possum's face off then cut around the eye socket. In the center of the belt buckle, where the possum's eye would be, he has placed a small piece of wood from his old '52 Ford's home made railroad tie bumper. Damn, he misses that truck.

Can you honestly imagine yourself double-clicking on the playboy game icon on your desktop and playing this game for any length of time seriously?! Why not just look up PORNOGRAPHY on the internet if you want to see naked women? I don't see how the idea of running a playboy empire would be fun at all! Is this what computer gaming has come to? All image and no substance?

I say it's the people who impulse buy shitty games that give companies the impression that this is what gamers want...*sigh*
