Playboy Game Unveiled

ARUSH Entertainment announces that production is underway on a game that sounds like it could be titled "Playboy Tycoon" (of course, you'll only play it for the articles). Here's the deal:
The first Playboy- branded game, which will be playable on multiple platforms including PC, Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox consoles, is targeted to be in stores in 2004.

The game, which is based on the world-builder simulation genre of video games, will allow players to walk in the slippers of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, establishing and building the Playboy empire and living the ultimate Playboy lifestyle.

The reason I don't like porn is nothing to do with prudishness, and all to do with the fact that it's exploitative and wrong.

Why do people get so worked up over nudity? The women are pretty... well some of them are anyway. So what's the problem? If I had a body as good as some of them do, I wouldn't be shy about it either. Game has a better chance in Europe. They aren't quite so prudish over there.

Rock Climber I may be the pathetic loaner or whatever else you want to call me, but I've never seen the "members section" of playboy. For I'm not as hard up as you obviously are. I think it is no big deal. They have an idea that might work. Would be great if no nudity in whole game, or even just a little bit. And it comes out to be good.

Then you'll have to take your hand off your prick and the other off your credit card as you subscribe to yet another month of "the members" section.

Bah, this game really doesn't sound particularly appealing to me either, but I honestly can't say at this point... people just seem to be acting stupidly.

It doesn't seem like they mean for the game to be porn. I don't think they expect to have people beating off to it. They don't put roller coasters in games and expect people to get motion sickness and puke. It's just a license. And why is everyone so bothered about seeing boobs? Hell, I'll be the first to admit I like seeing boobs. Not to say I believe they should be in my games, but the fact remains.

Not all Tycoon games are for non-gamers. Well, they are nowadays, but they haven't always been. Transport Tycoon is pretty good, and Rollercoaster Tycoon (the original, the sequel is the same thing re-hashed... boring) is incredible. However, midway through RCTs lifetime (after they released Added Attractions) things went downhill.

The amount of Tycoon games out now is obscene. Mall Tycoon, Pizza Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon... Heh. My ex-gf showed me Zoo Tycoon a few weeks back. You can't even begin to imagine how unimpressed I was.

Anyway. The franchise is getting out of hand.

I don't entirely get how this game is hoping to benefit from the Playboy branding. If people want porn, they'll just look on the 'net. If they want a good Tycoon type game then there's a million and one out there already.

I just don't get how it increases it's appeal to either camp by using this kind of crossover. Anyone looking for porn is not going to play a computer game to get it - not one of this ilk anyway. Anyone looking for a computer game like this is looking for a game, not porn; and if they want porn in addition to their games they'll look on the 'net.

I really don't think this is going to work.

What I find amusing here is that many of the same people aghast over the prospect of seeing a few boobies (in a game that will probably be more about business than sex) would probably fight for the right to play SOF or GTA3 - "well yeah... sure there's sex in GTA3 but you don't actually see any of the naughty bits - plus it's really fun".

Guys, this is a Tycoon game. The only point of making the Tycoon series is to sell as many copies as possible. They're not made for us hardcore gamers nor are they some sort of mecca of innovation in game design. We're not talking Deus Ex, here.
Tycoon games aren't for gamers, they're for those normal people who stare at you blank-faced when you mention your Geforce 4. They're designed to be fun for their target audience, which isn't us, because we are a minority.

@43 - how do you know ? So far there is pretty much nothing there at all from whats been released - a concept to do a 'worldbuilding' game, nothing more. Until they actually get into development and render some purty virtual boobs this is all just pointless speculation.

Besides, Playboy mag and TV show full frontal nudity so why not in the game ? The speculation over content here is totally based on our perceptions of what the Playboy brand is - you could argue that 99.9% of that is tits and ass and a bit of the other (especially more of the other no the TV side). If you are developing a game based on that brand then surely that's got to be some of the content, if not the main driving force, otherwise you are developing simply a 'playboy' game (note the lower case 'P') and as such bears little or no relation to Hugh's (soft)p0rn empire.

EDIT: scratch above, couldn't actually give a toss tbh - don't know why I'm bothing posting so I'll stop now.

one thing though - it will be interesting to see what the actual content / game will eventually be... I see from the PR blurb that XBOX is a target platform - MS did that whole stamping of feet when an adult developer wanted (and succeeded) in producing an interactive adult product for XBOX, either going to be totally dummed down or half-assed. Maybe both! Yippee

Halt. Please. This game will not show genitalia. Topless, maybe (probably) but not genitalia.

Like I mentioned earlier..the game will be sexy, but it won't be sex. There is a HUUUUGE difference between the two.

It will also be rated by the ESRB and will likely get an M...it will absolutely not even come close to getting an AO. That's not what we're about, and that's not what this game will be about.

Ok Weas if Playboy aint p0rn what is it ?

Lots of ladies showing off their genitalia in a variety of poses certainly seems like porn to me... having seen the Playboy channel I certainly don't think it was woodcraft I was watching!
