Impossible Creatures Demo

An Impossible Creatures Demo (thanks HomeLan Fed) is now available, offering a 278 MB sample of Relic Entertainment's RTS game of mix-and-match critters. The demo offers "three single-player missions, a tutorial and two "player vs. CPU" maps. The Sigma Combiner is also included, enabling you to create your own army of fearsome creatures that are generated by mixing and matching the various parts of two different animals. Fourteen animals are included in the trial version, while 50 different animals will be available in the retail product." The demo is mirrored on 3D Gamers and Worthplaying.

I installed the demo and dxdiag says I'm running 8.2 now. Haven't ran into any problems though, maybe I'm just lucky?

This is weird.. After I installed it on my XP system, I had to reboot (dunno why.. no big deal).. after I rebooted I got this odd message that I didn't have DX9 properly installed, and I needed to reinstall. Heck as far as I knew I was still running 8.1a. (or whatever comes with the SP1) The game runs fine regardless.

8:

You only have to do all that if you don't want to install DX8.2... which as others have mentioned, isn't beta software.

IC uses some of the networking fixes for firewalls/nat etc in DX 8.2, so yeah, the demo doesn't need it (as there's no online play in the demo), and the game should play fine if you work around installing DX 8.2.

Heck, just install it. DX 8.2 shouldn't cause any problems, if it does, update your drivers (which you should probably be doing anyways right?).

The EZ Pad crap's not spyware, it's a DRM Suite. Spyware, by definition, installs and reports information without you knowing it. As you know EZ Pad installs, and you know which information you enter into it, how can it possibly be spyware?

Guys, the fileplanet "demo" was actually a multiplayer BETA. This is what the original guy was complaining about, not the demo. The DEMO doesn't have any of this DX8.2 stuff.

Nor does it have that EZ Pad spyware crappe the MP stress test beta had.

I just installed it... been looking forward to this game for a while now.

ahh ok, gonna say 8.2 doesnt even change directx hardly at all, it was some stupid little fix, and the demo installed fine for me in xp so what ever.

Game looks promising don't think itd take too long to get bored of making the creatures albiet as fun as it is atm.

No, it was officially released when New World Order came out. Works just fine on my end and I dont see any difference with 8.2.

Christ, No. 7, all that just to play a demo? No thanks. There's no reason why a professional company should be putting potential customers through those hoops. How many times have installers been done now? I would think they would have figured it out by now.

It should not *require* DX 8.2, but the installer will probably try to force it unless you remove/replace the DX files in the directory that's included.

There were people transfering around their PC Gamer copies, and the orginal guys cut the DX Files out of the demo and replaced them with similarly named blank, 0byte files. In that situation, the game will install and give some errors on 2k and XP machines, but does require one of the DirectX EXE's to install on 98 machines.

To bypass them, extract the demo installer, and locate the DirectX diretory. Replace the files in it with 0 byte files with the same name, and you won't overwrite your directx.

For some officially un-offical information from Relic about DX8.2, see this thread:

http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7332

Note that EZ Pad is NOT used in this demo.

So is this confirmed? does this exact demo want to install direct x 8.2? I've been looking forward to this game for a while, but I'm not going to risk having to reformat and reinstall all my games on an 80 gig harddrive...

The fact that your games run fine is totally irrelevant. Everyone's system is different. The point he was making is the demo forces you to install DirectX 8.2 whether you want to or not.

I don't know what Mr Wibble is moaning about, I installed the last Impossible Creatures Demo with Direct X 8.2 and it hasn't made a blind bit of difference to any of my games, they all still work fine, games like BF194, MOHAA SH, Age of mythology WC3 ,HL, CS, RTCW and then some, all run with no problem at all.

I tried the demo on the PC Gamer cover disk and it worked fine, didn't try to install any DirectX beta software.

As for the game, cool concept, being able to create your own units, but gameplay is nothing new.

This demo really annoyed me. I downloaded it a while ago when it was hosted on fileplanet for the first 20,000 users. I did not even try the demo out but I hate it, here is what it did:

Upon installing the demo it said something like:

"This demo requires Direct X 8.2 do you wish to install it now?"

I did not fancy installing a beta direct x so I choose NO and canceled the demo installation. Guess what, the little git installed it anyway, now alot of my favourite games don't work and I have to find some time before christmas to format my system in order for all my chirstmas games to work.

Guess the demo just can't take NO for an answer.
