Updated Dungeon Siege Demo

Microsoft Game Studios has released an updated version of the demo for Dungeon Siege, Gas Powered Games' action/RPG. The new version 1.02d is a 197 MB download, which is 9 MB larger than the version 1.01d demo, and offers the following minor changes: "The duration for blood has been shortened and the flying debris of monsters in combat has been reduced, and in some cases eliminated."

It's all kind of like Diablo, except that you have followers and you kill more stuff. It's still quite boring after an hour or so though.

The single player of DS is very shallow. I've had fun playing the multiplayer on a LAN. MP over the net kinda stinks.

I ended up selling my copy of this game. It was def. hack and slash with very little story to pull you in.

The biggest advance they came up with was the 'only drink as much of your health potion as you need to' thing.

I'm not sure I can agree with this - to me, DS was a fun romp, but if anything one with a lot less depth and complexity than the Diablos. For me it was a game of running around and looking at the pretty environment and the new monsters that continually cropped up. Mindless, but mindless can be entertaining.

If someone reading this is looking for a game that's closer to Diablo with depth, I'd like to plug Divine Divinity. Even though I was turned off by occasionally quirky translation and godawful voice acting, it would be worth a shot for anyone interested, and I'd easily recommend it (and its demo) over Dungeon Siege.

Well, it certainly is aiming at the Diablo market/genre.

It is still a simple, shallow game...but a rich, deep Diablo-style game.

You sort it out.

Thinking DS does a lot for the genre as a whole,

I played through the demo and it was the same all the way through. Kill this group of monsters. Grab their stuff. If their stuff is better, use it. If not, toss it. Kill next group of monsters. Occaisionally you find someone that will follow you around and attempt to help you kill monsters. They are generally ok at it. It's all kind of like Diablo, except that you have followers and you kill more stuff. It's still quite boring after an hour or so though.

Yes, I would say that the demo is worth the download. The demo is not limited in features (as I remember), only in length, so it gives you a good idea of what the full game is like. I bought the full game for $20 and had a blast with it. I've since stopped playing it, but I more than got my money's worth.

The mod community does seem rather active though, one of these days I will get around to reinstalling the game and try out some of the great looking mods.

I own Dungeon Siege and found it extremely fun. More action than Neverwinter Nights, though NWN is good in it's own right. I think it's worth downloading the demo, especially if you like action-RPGs. And it has a growing mod community with some loayl supporters.

The demo is quite nice and lengthy IMO for a demo. I believe the developers stated that the demo is about 10%-15% of the complete game and it's an adventure. I don't have the full version but I did enjoy my time in the demo the first time. It almost sounds like they 'downgraded' this demo: less blood and less debris. I could understand the less blood as it stuck around for a while but reducing the debris doesn't make much sense. I suppose it might prevent the frame rates from dropping but I digress. The demo is a great deal of fun and you'll most likely enjoy it.

My advice for the demo is to have each character focus on only one weapon style. For example, if you acquire a person who has some skills in spell casting but none elsewhere then have them devoted to only casting spells. Whatever weapon style you have your starting character go with stick with it. That way they'll be able to use some of the cooler, high-level weapons that can be found in the demo. There didn't seem to be enough experience in the demo to have a diversified character who could use high level, specialized weapons and be skilled, if only partially, in other weapon types.
