Sims Online Preview

GameSpot's promised epic Sims Online preview has been posted, as Geoff Keighley: Behind The Games The Endless Hours of The Sims Online offers another of Geoff's trademark insanely detailed previews that describes production on the upcoming MMORPG that will place the player in the challenging role of a human being. The article takes advantage of his Maxis access to offer behind the scenes info about the project and the millions (as in 25) of dollars that have gone into creating its millions (as in three) lines of code. Included is a biography of Will Wright and a history of prior Sim projects, the idea behind taking the Sims online, the daunting prospect of competing with games like EverQuest, the ongoing appeal of the little people, the audience The Sims attracts, some design issues they had to overcome, testing, balancing the exploitative tendencies of hardcore players with those of more creative types, crunch time, delays, expectations as they gear up for launch, and (believe it or not) more.

..this will be the first MM game where the girl avatar you are chatting with is actually *gasp* a girl. This could really help out with the nerds getting dates!

We all remeber how Myst went to the number one spot way back when. Most gamers didn't get it, but thats what we have all over again. I personally don't know if I'll get this game or not. I did play the Sims for awhile. I can't believe I actually enjoyed it. Its just not my style but there it was. I guess sometimes you just need to play something more layed back. And besides, this is good for the nerds of the world. Your at your pc in your room, and yet at the same time your sorta developing a social life, in a sense. I guess the whole be who you want to be has mass appeal.

Spent two hours downloading the 1.2 gig game, then a 112MB patch. The very first house I entered, there were a bunch of people clicking away at computers.. then one of them bellowed for "MORE FOOD PLZ". Quit, uninstalled, deleted.

I mean really, why pay for a sim LAN party when I could go to a real one for free? =)

First I don't consider my family members the 'lowest common deominator'.

They are learning how to bridge the gap between casual players and 'l33t' players. Their goal is to make the game fun for 'n00bs' and hardecore gamers. Not sure if they can do it, but why would anyone not want them too try?

I think TSO will become deeper as time passes. If they can maintain the balance for both types of players remains to be seen.

yes, it will be a revolution. it will be a bad revolution. publishers will realize that dumbing games down for the lowest common denominator = sales.

Agreed. TSO will be the biggest thing to ever happen to the video game industry bar none.

It's going to not only get more people to play video games that have never even considered playing one, but is going to get them all online as well.

I'd go as far to say it will be a video game revolution.

I know a lot of you 'hardcore' gamers like myself are like wtf how could anyone like this game.

But I have family members that have never touched a video game in their life that are playing the TSO playtest as much as I have played EQ and DAOC in the past.

It's so much fun to them. And it's fun for me too playing with them, something I never thought would happen.

Total and compleate... Oh course I was expecting a LOT more from an online simes game. But heck I can't even break in and steal peoples stuff... now what kind of game is that ^_^;; I was play testing this for a while and I just can't find why SO many people like the online game so much.
