Out of the Blue

I visited my friend with the Airport wireless network again, and it turns out whatever glitch that knocked me offline as I was departing the last time I tried this was temporary, because I was able to connect easily. As was pointed out in our forums after I first mentioned this, getting this to work on a PC with WEP enabled involves generating an equivalent WEP keyword from the Mac side for the PC side, so it's not without its tricky aspects, but the F.M. seems to have disappeared, so that's a relief. Cross-platform wireless networking... now we're talking!

The season has only been over for a week, but I miss Curb Your Enthusiasm already...

Play Time: Optical Illusions. Combining some familiar themes from past links here. Thanks jercilla.
Story of the Day: Musical chairs 'too violent'. Thanks TJZ-VerTiGo. First dodge ball, now this. What's next... Duck, duck, goose? (I didn't notice how old this was at first).
Media of the Day: Turban_hi.wmv. Thanks jercilla.
Follow-ups: Fight! Kikkoman. Yesterday's Kikkoman song with subtitles. Thanks Justin.
Kidnapped lawn gnomes return home. Thanks zombie69. At least I'm almost positive this was covered before.

I guess we could start with video and computer games

If anyone wants to remove 'competition' and 'violence' from elementary schools, they'll have to remove recess entirely from the curriculum. Playgrounds are cesspools of violence, greed, games of high competition, and social hierarchy.

Also, sports would be out of the question. And tests. Can't have kids with lower grades feeling inferior. In fact, school should be about how everyone is exactly the same as everyone else, and no one should have anything that everyone else doesn't have.

And then again, you could just become communists.

Luckily I knew this one already (scared the shit out of me). I'd really appreciate it if you'd check before posting scare flashes, I have a heart condition.

Ok, I don't, but I could have.

As for the cough syrup, do you work for them or something? Why send me to such an obscure brand? Never heard of it before.

Next time you have a bad cough give it a try. You will hate me and thank me at the same time. I can't imagine how they can manage to make that stuff taste that bad. It does work tho...

The idea is good until at the end with a "shocker". I am starting to hate those kind of thing now. I get some kinda of "Play-Time-Phobia". Can you warn us when "Play time" contains such material please? I personally get very into thinking those neat illusion until that the ferret(?) caught me totally off guard. Laugh at me, I don't care, but that almost threw me off the chair. Luckly my heart is healthy, but it really bothers me.

That's wild man...same game, though?

What do you call the one where you take chalk and draw 8 or 9 boxes on the sidewalk and the kids jump from one to the next? It's "hopscotch" here in the States.

Save your throat.

By the way, I want the ads to work.
Well, not the ones that bother nin at work (or anyone else for that matter).

For whatever reason, Blue just doesn't want our money. Until he says otherwise I'll support him the only way I can. By letting the ads run on my machine. I just wish I knew why some of them won't display.

Ah, thanks Pete and Oberiko. Indeed, we also have this game. In case anyone wants to know, we call it (translated) "Voyage to Jerusalem".

And I agree - sheesh, this game is considered too violent? And what's bad about the fact that fast kids have an advantage? That's the case with most children's games (and sports) and I consider it a good thing - at least that way kids get a bit of a workout and don't end up playing computer games all day.

Uh, before I get kicked for that last sentence: I obviously like playing games (otherwise I wouldn't post here) but I also think that children shouldn't do this exclusively but get some exercise once in a while.

There, that's my 2 cents on child education :).

Musical chairs is where you have X number of people and X-1 chairs. The chairs are usually arranged in a circle-like arrangement, each one facing outwards.

While the music plays the people walk around the chairs, when it suddenly stops everyone tries to take a seat. Who ever doesn't get one is then out of the game. One chair is then removed and the game continues as such until there are two people and one chair.

I find it difficult to believe that this is considered violent. When I was a wee one we would play neuter. You sit one kid down on a portion of the chain fence, then you have about 8 people on each side suddenly jerk it up at the count of three. The object was to see how high you could get them and/or to cause bodily harm.

Next to that, the massive 60+ people snow wars (complete with fortresses) was almost mild.

musical chairs
there are more kids than chairs, music is playing, chairs are set up in a cirlce, with seats facing outwards, kids walking around the chairs, music stops, kids try to sit down on seat. keep goin till there is only 1 chair and 2 kids. music stops randomly. great fun for all, even fun for adults(only works for adults if alcohol involved)

I can see them raising a generation of pacifists who never get anything done, because they're all terrified of offending each other.

Isn't that this generation already?

And I'm getting curious: what kind of game is "musical chairs"? Never heard of it, though I'm sure that we also play it here (Germany). Probably just under a different name...

That's simply out of control. We're a species that thrives on challenge and conflict, it's how we evolve. I can see them raising a generation of pacifists who never get anything done, because they're all terrified of offending each other.

soon there will be a link to violent behaviour to all these kids games, then they will be outlawed.

when they outlaw musical chairs, only outlaws will be playing it? or something like that

I never played musical chairs.

I love to go down to the schoolyard and watch kids run around and scream...

They dont know that I'm only using blanks.
