Renegade Linux Server Prerelease

Westwood's C&C Renegade Website now offers downloads of a new version of the Command & Conquer Renegade Linux "FDS," which our best guess is stands for 'full dedicated server.' This is actually a prerelease in anticipation of the next client patch for the C&C FPS, so rather than for operating an updated server at this point, the file is being offered to allow server administrators to test it out to make sure it runs properly.

If its in the bargain bin, i will probably pick it up. Well, after my tour of duty on battle for europe. Even though we are getting smoked by the allies its still a lot of fun. All you non believers should give it a try. i am in the day of defeat campaing, but there is also a medal of honor, wolfenstein, bf1942 available.

Pete, the sequel was canned, someone released some purported screenshots from it a while back and that made the news here at Blue's. The full game, patched does run better than the demo. Now that it's down to a budget price, I picked it up for $19.99, it's definitely worth it. I actually prefer it to BF 1942, even if BF is "prettier".

Don't judge games on demos. Both full version of Ren and BF ran a lot better in the final version then in the demo's on my system. At the time it was the lower end of the sys req's on both games... but now that my computer has caught up with the games it just looks/plays damn good. Ren's netcode is a lot better now then when it was released, but I still think it's best on a lan. BF I havn't touched in a while thanks for UT2003 and NS.(mainly NS)

Renegades when you connected to a good server has always been a great stable game. Their main problem was that everyone was trying to run servers from their homes and it really needed a big machine/connect to handle the load.

Also the main reason I havn't been playing it lattely (Like a lot of games) is because you need to put the damn CD in the tray every time you want to play. Last Time I went "Oh I think i'll jump into a quick game", being greated by a "No CD found in Drive" error just killed my urge and sent me back to another game that I didn't need the CD for.

If they do end up doing a sequal, I hope they license out for a new engine (UT2003 would work great), since that seemed to be where most of their problems where, along with people trying to run servers on connections that chouldn't support them.

Wasn't it reported here that the sequal was canned, due to lack of sales or unmet expectations?

The demo scared me away, along with BF1942. Mabey i will pick them up next year when they become more stable

Yea, this is a great online game. I usally have trouble finding servers, since it seemed that all the good servers (which are lacking when compared to other games) are always filled with 32 or so players. This is a GREAT Lan party game.

For $20 it is very much worth it. The single player game perhaps isn't the most original in the world but its lots of fun and theres always action coming at you at a fast pace. Plus, if you like weapons like me you'll be in heaven. Shitloads of weapons.

MP is the best though as it plays sort of like a cross between Tribes and a military simulation. Graphics are servicable but the netcode has always been shaky.

I played the game daily for almost 3 months wich is more than I'll play most new titles.

Free Dedicated Server.

It is played by many... It's a great multiplayer game. The best.

As for mod community... I just recently (this Saturday) hosted, on GameSpy Arcade a chat session with the mod team of C&C Reborn, a modification for Renegade to bring the Tiberian Sun theme to the game... With mechs, drones, AI troopers from drop-pods and all in multiplayer. You can check out the full chat log and links to screens and videos at http://www.planetcnc.com/community/reborn

Or check out the official website of this mod at http://www.planetcnc.com/ammo/reborn

I'm planning on hosting another chat session on GameSpy Arcade in just over 2 weeks with the mod team of Renegade Alert, a team that is making a TC of Renegade to Red Alert (the original), it's another great modification.

Some of the other mods in development include a StarCraft based modification, a WW2 based modification, a GI Joe based modification and many others.

I've seen copies of Renegades for less than $20 bucks. If there are still alot of people playing I'd be tempted to pick it up. Has there been much of a mod community? Does it run better than the "demo"?

We ( gaming.blueyonder.co.uk ) currently run 4 Renegade servers, which are pretty much always full. It's a fun game online, if you have a good team.

Anyone know if theres still a lot of people playing this online?

I was hoping that they'd go on with the sequel as I think the game had a really good chance at becoming a great MP experience with a bit more work.
