Grand Theft Alibi

Teen says game inspired crime spree (thanks Robert Routley) is the latest story of someone looking in the mirror and placing the blame for their actions squarely on someone else, as it tells the story of a Wisconsin teen who blames the game Grand Theft Auto for "an auto theft spree involving about 100 vehicles."

Who cares about this kid. He is from Wisconsin of all places. I thought that state was marked for carpet bombing. It was the kid that did the robbing, not the game, and we all know about those kids from Wisconsin. They aren't exactly the most intelligent of the bunch.

No ones saying people should go and kill other stupid people, we are just saying that if someone is stupid enough to do everything in computer games, it would be nice if they would just play computer games where the stupid actions will only hurt themselves.

Well maybe he can hire Cochran and get the Chewbacca defense.

Chewbacca didn't steal cars. He's too big to fit in cars. Now why would Chewbacca steal a car if he's too big for one?

I just hope he makes sure his client wears a Chewbacca outfit to the trial.

The possible pain, suffering and sacrifice of discovery are by no means an excuse to remain ignorant.

The bartering of things sought earned are by a means which only little men can abide by and hope to achieve.

He's about to find out that when you get "busted!" in the real world, you go to jail. You don't wind up standing outside the police station about five seconds later.

And he won't be able to load his saved game, either.

100 cars?...I think I'll go see how many cars I can steal.

Well the CNN story isn't too clear about it, but it looks like he didn't steal most of those cars, he broke into most of them and stole stuff inside. He probably did steal a few, but not 100.

For that matter, it doesn't sound like he carjacked anyone, which is the main crux of GTA. If they had named that game series "General Crime Spree" perhaps the media couldn't latch onto it so well.

For that matter, if it was one kid doing a car jacking I can see how the parallel might be made. One adult doing 100 different crimes, presumably not on the same day or occasion, is not a corrupt person due to a video game, it's just a corrupt person.

Blame our court system for not laughing this guy directly to jail with a defense like this. It makes me sick to think my tax money will be spent on the court listening to this presentation.

He cut the possum's face off then cut around the eye socket. In the center of the belt buckle, where the possum's eye would be, he has placed a small piece of wood from his old '52 Ford's home made railroad tie bumper. Damn, he misses that truck.

On a side note, why don't all the drug dealers blame Drug Wars?

100 cars? That kid shows some real initiative.

I'm inspired! I think I'll go see how many cars I can steal. And when they catch me, I'll blame CNN for exposing me to this story.

Personally, I blame Final Fantasy for my problem of running round in circles looking for a fight, Civilisation for making me want to take over the world, Theme Park for wondering how big a rollercoaster I'd have to build to make people sick, Monkey Island for my beer... sorry... grog problem (not to mention my impulses to abuse people selling real estate, insurance etc by swindling them), Aliens for making me bite people's heads off and Command and Conquer for the occasional need to turn a rock track up loud while playing.

Of course there's a lot more problems I got from reading, but they're out of fashion now.

I think if teachers were still allowed to punish students at school with a good 1 meter ruler or paddle tennis bat shlacking, the world would be a better place today and shit like this wouldn't happen (as much). There are three main disciplines that need to be instilled into kids these days: a) discipline itself; b) respect, especially towards your elders; c) and a need to think for yourself and have a grasp of actions and consequences... You could probably come up with several more very important issues of raising kids, but we've been over this ad-nauseum.

He's 19 years old, though. Which means that he does in fact have to be held responsible for his own actions, unless he pleads insanity. And it'd be pretty hard to link a video game with legal insanity.
