Out of the Blue

Vin Diesel to Start Videogame Company on GameSpy.com has word that Vin Diesel is entertaining the idea of starting his own video game company. There's not a lot of precedent to predict how this will fare, though if the reverse of this situation (game authors making movies) is any indication, I have a dire warning to share with Vin... just remember the Wing Commander movie...

#6: I actually thought the Super Mario Brothers Movie was handled relatively well. They gave it an actual stand alone plot, the acting was excellent(even the NY accent girls worked). The characters were decent. And being what it is the premise was interesting. I think the best thing is that they managed to take all the games and re-write everything more-or-less from the premise up, yet still be true to the games. And it was witty. Even as a bad movie...compared to most other video game adaptations its friggin' Shakespeare(and unlike Lara Croft it doesn't rely on Marios' breasts).

#15: I don't think the opening credits to the first movie were that spectacular. I'm not going to get into it but I think the movies were decent just took the wrong aproach to the whole story arc.

As for Wing Commander... I have the habit of being able to like almost all movies, cuz I look at them as a critic, as a aspiring pro, as a geek, and as a fan. for once all four of these hated it.
The acting was surprisingly good considering the two leads... And I'm actually glad it's 'submarine in space.' and Chris Roberts is a great guy...
...but Roger Ebert puts it best when he said:
"These actors, alas, are at the service of a submoronic script and special effects that look like a video game writ large. ``Wing Commander'' arrives at the end of a week that began with the death of the creator of ``2001: A Space Odyssey.'' Close the pod bay door, Hal. And turn off the lights."
At least he didn't "HATE HATE HATE HATE" it... Ebert's the man...check out his reviews for Pearl Harbor and North.
www.suntimes.com/ebert ... Funny stuff.

Didn't they just prove that wine wasn't good for you a few weeks back?

However much you may hold your opinion dear on the relative quality of Wing Commander and Star Wars, you are in the extreme minority there. Not that Ep 1 and 2 are particularly good... it's just that Wing Commander is particularly bad. The acting was wooden, the plot contrived, and fans of the original games were let down by acting and a plot WORSE than Wing Commander 3.

And I think that's the real tragedy... it may have been a mildly acceptable movie in its own right, but it was based on a great game, and the comparison cannot help but be made.

On a personal level, I thought the movie was ok... except I hated the portrayal of the Kilrathi, the art direction on the ships, and the mediocre acting of the main character. After those (core, vital, important) points are overlooked, the movie was not that bad.

Maybe something was lost in the translation:

The producers and sponsors of this film are in no way responsible for any injury or death as a result of viewing this film.

Once again proving that poor quality in a film can kill the audience.

A sequel? Wooo!

Seriously, I liked the movie. Of course it's more or less a submarine flick in space, but so what? It's fun.

Oh come on.
Wing Commander might of been a terrible translation of
the source games, but I thought it was a good movie in and
of itself. Hell, it's getting a sequel. SOMEBODY must of
liked it.

Besides, it's better than Eps 1&2 of Star Wars(last 15 mins
each of both films excluded(25 mins if you count the credits
as part of the movie)).

ZDNet had a news article about panhandlers on the net and I couldn't find it, so I checked here which I was sure someone sent Blue the link for it as a "Loser of the Week" in OOTB.

I know that www.pleasehelpdon.com has gotten some publicity on the net in the past, but this article was actually about someone who actually had people send her money. If anyone has the link, please post here. I would like to read that article.

DOOM has been in and out of movie production hell for ages. Paramount are the latest to have a crack - there was a story on Blue's a while back:

at first I thought it was a satirical page.

anyway, what the seller has "budgeted" to bring it up to livable specs is ridiculously low. Whoever bids on it better expect to pay about 10 times what the seller is quoting (likely more) to make it livable.

Anyone remember the days of the original DOOM games? I remember back when I read most of my gaming news on Usenet (anyone remember alt.games.doom?), there was so much talk about DOOM: The Movie. I don't know if it was just internet hype of if there was actually a legitimate plan to put the game on the big screen. The idea eventually fizzled when Quake came out, but then there was a less-hyped talk of Quake: The Movie.

If any game that I currently play were to go to movie format, I'd like to see a movie based on IL-2 Sturmovik- preferably with the actual planes flying instead of CGI

people will buy it simply because Vin Diesel has done it.
