American Conquest English Demo

Following the release of the German demo last week (story), the downloads page on the American Conquest Website now offers the English language playable demo for this upcoming strategy game centered around the influx of Europeans into North America, the 221 MB file is mirrored on 3D Gamers. Here's the description of the demo, which arrives just in time for Columbus Day: "The demo includes a mission, in which you are able to play on the side of the spanish invaders against the native Maya tribe. You will be able to get an idea of the detailed graphics as well as on the intense gameplay. A small tutorial at the beginning of the game helps you through the first steps to establish a colony and recruit your men. The demo offers additionally a limited multiplayer mode in which you are able to test the game over a network or the internet."

OK, here's a mini review for people unsure. This is based off only a short gaming stint so don't take it as gospel.

Gameplay: Run of the mill RTS, following the same formula that Age of Empires used with little innovation.
Sound: Also the usual.
Graphics: Very impressive. Great textures, excellent water. It even grabbed the player's god view and took me off to see a waterfall my troops came across which did look excellent. The saving grace.

Overall: Nice graphics on a standard RTS game. 7/10.

Worth downloading? If you've got a good connection and you don't have much to do, it's worth a spin particularly if you're a fan of the genre. If the download takes more than about an hour and you want to use the bandwidth for other things, you won't miss much.

Cheers,
Quboid

I would have to agree with Rseman on this subject. Too many idiots would ruin the rating system because of some vandetta against a company, programmer, or type of game. I would use the rating scale like I currently use these boards. Look for the few posters I feel contribute to the conversation with information to help me decide if I should try the game, software, or hardware in question. If the rating system got put in place I would still only value those I felt I would trust with said rating.

I don't know if you've ever tried it, but go to movies.yahoo.com and check out the "reader reviews" of movies. Sometimes it makes me laugh, sometimes it makes me want to go on a killing spree -- it depends on the day. Besides, I would just look at Ray's ratings anyway =)

A simple star rating would suffice, even with some biased rankings it could help persuade others to try the game out.

Or we could just post our regular comments like usual. It seems to be working, except for everytime there is a fps game. "My id is better than your Epic! but not as good as my monolith, but thats nothing compared to my Valve!?" or something like that

It's an interesting concept, but difficult to police and make it a useful addition.

Anonymous posting was killed because idiots post. Now we have registered idiots.

The same problem would occur with a game ranking system. Someone who didn't like Epic would rate an id engined game higher and vice versa. In the end, the ranking system would be ignored completely, quite possibly, because it would be full of irrelevant BS by people who didn't have a clue.

In the perfect world this would be a nice addition. But really, I think this would be a waste of Blue's effort.

You get a feel for some of the people who post here, whether or not they're with it or not. For now, I'll just take notice of those I feel I can trust to be sane and fair. I suggest others do the same.

Although it would be neat if this was ever done, I would not see it as something that I would really use; I would think that it would be too subjective, especially considering the people that visit the site.

There are a few obvious stinkers, but I otherwise make an effort to try out a great majority of the released demos in case I stumble upon that one rare gem that is really fun to play.

Besides, I want to implement a way to donate to the site before we do anything else.

Willing some gaming news to happen :),

A ranking system is a great idea, but not only should people give it rank, but they should be able to comment on why they gave it that rank.

hmmm how about it blue? Put in a rating system... it can even just be a general rating system for like articles... but for demo's it would be considered a demo rating.

Well I'll have the demo in an hour or so... so after that I can write up how it is. Right now it's hard to get into mirrors.

New demo and no idea what it's about so don't know if it's worth the d/l? do we need some kind of ranking system on blues to give us quick feedback if it's worth it?
