DOOM III Q&A

There's a DOOM III Q&A on Gaming Invasion talking with Tim Willits, the lead designer on id Software's upcoming DOOM III (unless I miss my guess, this was conducted waaay back at QuakeCon). They discuss his inspirations in pursuing a career in game design, working with John Carmack, how DOOM III is coming along, challenges the game has presented, the most impressive feature of their new engine, multiplayer support, mod support, supporting lower-end hardware, weapons, per-poly collision detection, and more.

Rolphus does have some good points, but- it sounds like this new DOOM doesn't have much in common at all with the original. It apparently has a detailed plot driven storyline with no co-op, where the original had a paragraph of story and some of the best coop gameplay to date. Were they not feeling that the new game could stand up on its own merits that they had to use a popular brand name they controlled to boost the sales? Or did they could just want to go back and develop the storyline that comprises the DOOM universe and have a little fun with it? I sincerely hope it is the latter.
I'm just a little worried, since storyline has never been known as id's strong point.
