On UT2K3 Lock-ups & Patch Plans

The Unreal Technology Website has word on a short FAQ they've posted with suggested solutions on what to try if you are experiencing random-lock ups in Unreal Tournament 2003. Also, a post to the Infogrames, Inc. Forums by James Schmalz (thanks Unreality) describes what's in the works for the next UT2003 patch, including IRC chat in the in-game server browser and enhanced key-binding support, along with accompanying screenshots showing off the new features.

Anyone know how to bind Mouse4 and Mouse5 in this game? The binds menu in-game seems to have them mapped to Left & Right, respectively. I like using the side buttons on my intellimouse for voice commands or to toggle to a specific weapon.

Gee is this even more of an example of how they delayed the game so long so it would be a perfect release, and how they fixed all the bugs from the demo?

Epic can bite me, I'm so glad I didn't waste my money on this game.

Devster, I'm using a Logitech dualop mouse with four buttons: the two regulars, a wheel, and a side button. If I remember correctly I didn't have any problem binding the 4th (side) button to alternate fire (for example). But I think the way I did it was the old Quake3/Tribes2 standby, by binding it to another key outside of the game and then binding that key to the function you want. In my case, the 4th button is bound to F5 in Windows, so when I pressed it in UT2k3 it bound F5 (and thus the 4th button) to that action.

I know it's not really what you're asking, but it works.

(EDIT-) And to Ratzo– It's not a total loss, as you seem to think. I (for one) haven't had any lockups or issues with the game. Although it's similar to T2... So many people seemed to enjoy hopping on the "it sucks!" bandwagon without ever trying it, simply because they heard that "everyone" was having problems with it. But back to UT2k3... I've gone through the SP portion and have played a fair amount of MP. Zero crashes, zero freezes. Hell I even have the Evil Trio(tm): an AMD Thunderbird, a VIA board, and an SB Live! soundcard, and the game runs well for the hardware that I have.

Morgan19 - bleah too much work; plus I like how mine are set up for browse-y goodness now. in Q3 (iirc), I edited the .cfg manually to reference "MOUSE4" and "MOUSE5" (similar to how "MOUSE1" and so on were in there). maybe I'll try that here...

oh, and thanks for your help, Ratzo.

I have the brand new Logitech cordless MX 700 mouse and the goddam wheel won't function in UT2k3. I even used the registry patch for gamers at the Logitech site and it still doesn't work.

I'm running WinXP Pro so anyone who has gotten it to work, let me know.

You'd think after several years that Logitech would've fixed this issue.

Oddly enough, I've got a similar setup: the dual optical Logitech mouse (corded, not cordless), XP Pro, and I'm using MS's IntelliPoint software instead of Logitech's mouseware. I've found that scrolling "response" and general functionality actually works better using the MS software, so you might want to give it a try. It works fine even though it's not an MS mouse... You might lose some Logitech-specific functions like that little Web app that pops up with forward, backwards, etc. "buttons," but I never used that anyway so it was no loss. If you do try it, let me know how it goes for you.

A few weeks ago this thread would have been topping list above under "popular threads". A strange silence seems to have spread now that this game has been released. So what's up? Do you guys who bought it like it? It doesn't seem to have quite the following I expected upon release. On Gamespy stats it's rather low on the list of current games being played.

Thoughts anyone??

The game has only been out for a week and a half, it will take a little more time to build up a playerbase. The system requirements are also higher, which may be dampening sales. The game itself is good and runs fine for me.

Devster, if you use the latest IntelliPoint software for your mouse, you can use it to assign mouse buttons for specific programs. For example, my fifth mouse button is assigned to F12 for UT2003. I-game, I assign my TL to F12 and it works fine with the mouse. Built-in support would be better, but this works and since it's program-specific, it doesn't affect anything else.

Is this the patch that is going to make this game fun like the first UT. This is the most boring piece of garbage I have played all year. If not, at least replace that stupid ass announcer so I can enable it and know what is going on in the boring game. I am waiting for the UT classic mod that I hope someone is working on to restore the fun. It has a great new engine and I love the Karma but what a disapointment with the gameplay and sounds.

It is kinda funny how we have BF1942's fun gameplay but slow buggy technology and UT2003's great technology but boring gameplay. Too bad we can't combine both games into one like Unreal 1942 or something and have a great game to play. Maybe I should make a mod for UT2003 like BF1942 since it supports vehicles and big terrain maps. Maybe my rants will get the fanboys hyped up and put this thread up in the popular threads so Sparrow will feel better. I give up.

I for one enjoy the game. It is a welcome break from BF1942. I have yet to run into any problems with the game. No crashes or lockups.

I think the problem with the lack of players is two fold.
1.The initial lack of dedicated server only files.
2.It's close release to BF1942 and the cost. Fortunately I have the cash to spend on 2 games within a month. Many people do not. I think people will slowly pick it up.

BTW, if you can play this game with everything cranked it looks amazing...I get fragged all the time because I keep looking at things.

This game rocks. People are to busy playing it to write here I guess. What I want to know is if they have an official fix for the CD check not enabling you to play. I had to download the crack and now have to go to system file to start the game every time. Other than that I love it. Well, some of the levels are too cramped, but other than that I love it.

Agreed, it's a lot of fun. I picked up BF1942 a week or two before UT2k3 and I haven't touched BF1942 since. Too bad it's past the return date. UT2k3 really is a lot like UT, obviously, so it's a good bet that if you liked the first you'll probably like this one. But a bunch of the reviews have also hit on another good point, and that's that the game's a lot like Q3, also. So the Q3 people might be surprised by the game as well.

I don't agree with this. A better way to word this would be, if you liked UT and you liked Q3, you will probably love UT2k3. But, if you loved UT and thought Q3 was ass (which it was), you won't like UT2k3. If you didn't like UT, but loved Q3, you are an iD fanboy and probably won't try UT2k3 despite the fact that it was designed just for you.

Red

[Edit] P.S. The UT2k3 review listed today is very good (in my opinion). Any UT or Q3 fan should be able to tell if they'll like UT2k3 after reading it.

I am having a lot of fun with the game so far. I love bombing run. It's the best new gametype to come along since CTF. I play mostly instagib CTF and BR. I still am nowhere near as good at 2K3 as I was at UT, but then it took me a while to get that good at UT in the first place, so I'm giving it time. I think it's a tougher game than UT really. A bit faster paced and requiring more accuracy. The adrenaline is a neat addition, and while I didn't like the way the doublejump and strafejump worked at first, I've gotten used to it now, and even like it. All in all, it's a good game. Only time will tell if it will become as popular as UT. It looks like a lot of the UT clans are going to either switch to 2K3 or at least play both, so there should be a pretty good player-base soon.

Man, I really want to buy it. Unfortunatly, my computer has a crappy 10Gig HD in it. I still have 2 gig free, which is plenty for what I do (development). $80 would buy me a great HD, but I am having trouble spending $140 (HD + game) just to play this game right now, and this game would be the only reason I would need to upgrade at this moment.

I just wonder how many others are in my situation. Is this game worth $140?
