>>>dvd. I mean come on... what is finally going to force game companys that require these 1+ gig installs to finally switch to dvd?<<<

Mmmm, here's a thought... When the majority of people actually *have* DVD drives on their computers? The theory "well they're better and faster and I have one so most everyone must have one!" hardly applies. CD drives are still the norm and companies are going to use what gets their product out to the largest audience.

>>>Also why the hell do I still have to have the CD in the drive after a 2.5 gig install and a SN?!? It's not like this is a mainly single player game, or that it's pulling ANY info off the cd's while you play.<<<

It's copy protection. Granted, it's a silly method, but it usually has nothing to do with accessing anything on the disc like you seem to angrily think. (Unless it's something like an RPG with huge cutscenes, but even thouse you can copy to your hdd.) And 99% of the time there's a nocd patch out within a week or two of any game's release anyway, so what's the problem?

Okay I think what you need to ask is not why it didn't come in a dvd case. But why it came on 3 CD's instead of 1 dvd. I mean come on... what is finally going to force game companys that require these 1+ gig installs to finally switch to dvd? I for one whould have liked to just have installed the game and then had the "movies" run off a dvd, I know it wouldn't have saved a ton of space, but it whould have helped. Also why the hell do I still have to have the CD in the drive after a 2.5 gig install and a SN?!? It's not like this is a mainly single player game, or that it's pulling ANY info off the cd's while you play.

Lastly: Why can't they afford for one of their biggest releases to put it in even a jeweled case... I got 3 cd's inside little paper sleaves. It almost made me fear installing a game from a company that's too cheap to afford a descent case. I mean if they arn't going to give you a case, what else could they have left out of the actul game? (Thankfully it looks like nothing)

I'm sure most of us initial shipped users got the orange manual. Keep this all in tact. In 25 years *SOMEBODY* will likely pay good money for it. Heck, I still have my original DOOM 3.5" Floppies in the original box with the manual. hehe.

I'm glad someone can run this thing full on. If I turn on everything (I run 1280x1024) along with Quincuxx on my Overclocked-watercooled XP2100 and TI4600 (315/710) Some of the maps (particularly inferno) Drop to 18-20 FPS. Cant wait for NV30, so I got a Radeon 9700 Pro and waterblock coming with a new XP 2600+ not far behind. Thank god for credit cards.

dvd movie owners would'nt stand for that.

then why do gamers? are we not as vocal as our dvd movie brethren? Or do we just accept everything they shovel at us?

why is it when it comes to games, publishers generally go for crappy dvd cases?
commandos 2 came on 3 discs, all squeezed on top of each other, sandwich style, mirricle they did'nt break

dvd movie owners would'nt stand for that.

dvd cases would also be easier for people to slip in their pockets and steal in the store, provided that they remove the tag so the alarm thing doesn't go off, DVD cases would be more eficient though, I hate having all these jewel cases hanging around, all my old ones get worn out and dont even stay closed or hold the cds in that well anymore...

I gotta agree with Schnapple. DVD cases make an incredible amount of sense. Even with the smaller boxes, the new game packaging still takes up way too much shelf space. DVD cases would consume half the space and provide better protection for the discs (assuming they use the plastic boxes and not the cheap cardboard ones).

some comments! I love this game...from 12:09 on Saturday we played for 17 hrs straight...16 people.

God i'm hooked. It has it's problems...but it is my new FPS.

SO perrty...now if i could find some servers that don't have LAG spikes...

stats rock.

screw the manuals...i got a regular one and all i used it for is the cd key.

screw the packaging...30 bucks after mail in voucher at eb...for all the mods and levels i will eventually play that's amazing. i have a damn binder for the cds...jewel cases suck. although i understand some people use cd racks...oh well. too bad.

did i mention the graphics are INCREDIBLE??? you *have* to have them maxxed out.

I hate when the game discs do not come in cases

say it with me now:

DVD Cases...DVD Cases...

Manual fits in there, discs come with protection, problem solved. And you can put 3 CD's in a DVD case - check out the Cleopatra special edition.

It really all depends on your definition of 'white'. I had no trouble reading it, not that there's any good information in there anyway. It's pretty much lacking on the verbs and nouns if you know what I mean.

I think that it is a...quirky color choice, but you can read it.

Then again, what type of self-respecting FPS gamer bothers with the manual? It is kill or be killed!

Edit: Some other quirks:
1. I hate when the game discs do not come in cases.
2. Insert the "Play" disc? I have a disc "1;" will that work?

Thinking UT was better for its time, but loving the frantic action of UT2K3,
Ray

You're both right. It's a cloudy background of both orange and white.

No, it's orange on white like the article said, Mr. Caps. I have one sitting in front of me and can attest to that.

There must be some blind people playing this game. I got one of the orange manuals and i can read it just fine, i dont have to work at all to read it. I'm also wondering how they gonna handle CD-Keys for those who switch manuals the CD-Key is on the back of it. They gonna just give them a new one if so will they disable the old one?
