Out of the Blue

If you can read this within any reasonable amount of it being posted, then you, like I am, are in the minority. It seems that a bureaucratic SNAFU lead to the domain here disappearing from various DNS over the past couple of days. I'm told it will be between 24 and 48 hours of now before this clears up, but I have been able to access the site all along on my Win2K machine, I assume this has to do with the different way this OS handles IP resolution, but anyway, I'm pretty certain I'm in a minority here. Meanwhile, I think the mail server has been fixed, but the underlying domain problem is still preventing my mail from arriving, so it really is Defcon 1 here, but in an effort to keep from falling too far behind, and of course for the benefit of those, like myself, who can still access the site, I will continue to update (provided it doesn't disappear for me along the way). My apologies for this incident, hopefully this is the darkness before the dawn, and this will all proceed to piece itself back together fairly quickly from this point on.

Just pulling up to the site now for today, can see it just fine, so hoping issues have been resolved!

And yes, vouching for Blue's News reliability / uptime as a visitor since... 2000? I've lost count.

I would presume that Stephen is having his own technical problems with the site. If you will note, he put up the Saturday update, he put up the Aquanox story about two hours later, and that was the last that we heard from him.

Presuming the problems are not too bad, I would expect a verey late "Sorry, technical problems prevented me from..." update today.

Clearing out some of my old games,

Both of UGO's nameservers were not responding at all during the outage. They are now, hence the fact that it's working again. This wasn't the result of changes being made. This was the result of BOTH DNS's going down, for a long time, and that causing other DNS's to think the domain is toast.

The way DNS works is that the DNS servers for Bluesnews
namely NS1.UGONETWORKS.COM hold something called a ZONE file, this contains all the information for the domain, including things called A Records
that point the domain name at an IP Address
(A record is anything before the .bluesnews.com)
ie ftp.bluesnews.com , the FTP is the A record

when changes are made, it usually takes about 24 hours for the changes to be propogated throughout all of the bigger DNS servers.

It was most likely an automated server effected it
It shouldn't really matter what OS you use, you could use a HOSTS file that does DNS resolution for you but you run the risk that if the IP address changes, you will have incorrect information,

It was most likely that it was just some ISP's havent seen the reflected changes that were made.

best test is always nslookup
if you went to a command prompt
type
nslookup www.bluesnews.com
you will get details of what your local DNS server believes it is

you can then do
nslookup www.bluesnews.com ns1.ugonetworks.com
then you can see the results of what Bluesnews own DNS server is reporting it as

just some useful info there for you all

All those other sites are owned/run by huge corporations, which can afford all sorts of redundant hardware backup and huge 24/7 tech support staffs and whatever else they need.

Blue is many things, but he's not a huge corporation.

Please do NOT target my IP Address for any DDOS attacks!

Also unlike other sites, Blue doesn't muck around with excessive graphics. Everything is in a nice, simple, clean -looking layout that doesn't take long to load. While some sites try to wow you with graphics they spent months working on Bluesnews realises that it is the content that is important.

Hell, not only is it usually reliable, it keeps on going where many other site I have seen have folded in on themselves in five dimensional space and were never heard from again.

Keep up the good job blue.

#29 you have obviously not been coming here for a long time. Even taking into account this latest spout of difficulties bluesnews.com has been more realiable over the past 5 years than 90% of the other websites i've been to.

I'm the webmaster at Australian Game Zone (http://www.agz.com.au), and I have also experienced some of the same difficulties as Blues here at times. 99% of the time it is due to nothing we have done, but either server or "net" issues that we are unable to resolve ourselves! I've been visiting Blue's News for years now, and have only suffered about a 1-2% fail rate (on seeing the site) - and that's from Australia!

Congrats to Blue's on the site... GREAT WORK!
