UT2003 Gold

After a sprinkling of false rumors yesterday, a post to the Infogrames, Inc. Forums by Epic's Mark Rein (thanks JP) has word that Unreal Tournament 2003 has gone gold as of 5:00 AM EDT this morning, and the game is expected in stores by the end of the month. He describes the contents of the three CD distribution, which will include the game and its over 35 levels, tools including Maya Personal Learning Edition from Alias|Wavefront, The Karma Authoring Tool, a mod "starter kit," the game's Linux support (which is not mentioned in the packaging), including the client and the server. He also mentions plans for future related releases such as a stand-alone server which will not require ownership of the game, the UDE (Unreal Development Environment), a customized version of Gmax, and other cool features for a bonus pack. In a later post (thanks Unreality), Mark also lists the names of the 37 maps the game will ship with.

I too want to go to war. Freedom has always had a large price and the USA has always been determined to pay it, as there is nothing more valuable to a people than its freedom. Our soldiers are trained for combat situations and will prevail, on the other hand, innocent civilians living their ever day lives are not trained for combat and will simply die by Saddam's tyranny and terrorism.

And as a bonus we'll finally be able to liberate Iraq's citizens and give them the freedom they deserve.

Getting rid of Saddam, regardless of price, will cost so much less than not getting rid of him. To believe otherwise is extremely naive and shallow. And based on your calls for votes you are putting your political agenda above freedom and a chance at peace, which is disgusting.

WAY back in Spring of 99 I was a pretty good Q2 player but never used the railgun cause I had only 56k. I was strictly a chain and rockets man, if you know what I mean. Well, while switching mods I started to play on a custom map server and was insulted many times for having no skills. So I decided to go only rail because that week I got cable modem (albiet Analog, all that was available here, but it cut my pings from 300 to 180). Well I used only railgun in the Weapons of Destruction mod (where chainguns fire shotgun shells, MG's fire rockets, rockets fire napalm rockets, etc), and in about 10 weeks achieved a 40percent rate of fire and ranked as one of the top players in the mod. I will say that at first it was VERY tough, I spent a lot of time hiding. I learned, too, to appreciate my shots and not miss any that I could help it with. In time my rail was feared on every server I played on and I could kill 6 or 8 other players with 10 shots, even in close.

So give the hitscan time, you will appreciate the skills.

Like everything, you learn and adapt. I find i'm pretty used to the speed now. After playing on a server that was sped up for awhile, when i moved back to a 'regular' ut2k3 server, it seemed hella slow.

also relating to the (way) earlier posts...after playing instagib for a while, I came to appreciate the higher level of skill/precision required. When i moved back to a regular game, i found i was a little disdainful of certain playing styles(like those who solely rely on rockets and splash dmg). I don't know if that's exactly what some of you (grin) ole timers meant, but i think i can relate...

Personally, after playing a while, I find the speed just right when I am in a hallway or an area that isnt too large. Like in Bombing Run, the speed seems ok in the side rooms with the Mini Lion sculptures and high entrances to the two main big rooms. I think the Flak cannon could be speeded up 10 percent though, as well as the rocket launcher. This is because when I am in a circle strafe battle, say, like in the big rooms in bombing run, it really is too fast. I can't aim for the guy directly with flak cannon and can't aim for his feet with rocket because of the speed.

But, like I said, it looks ok on smaller rooms. In the deathmatch, I didnt have a problem at all on speed on the Asbestos map. One thing of bieng faster paced is that it makes you consider that if you dont make a kill you could die in 2seconds too.

There is no doubt that UT2K3 looks beautiful. But you won't be looking at it very much, unless you just get bored and most of the people have left. The graphics are really quite amazing and they don't slow down gameplay. No, that is quite apparent. You won't be looking at the pretty graphics because you'll be too busy working on your carpal tunnel syndrome with the game pace being so fast that hamster legs would be too slow; a race horse would appear to be slow in this game. Oh yeah, you can turn it down... like that's going to happen! ("Um, mr. admin person, can you slow it down?" "STFU, I'm twelve and I'm on crack. It's slow enough as it is!")

Yeah, so did you ever see those stupid ass movies where some guy runs past a car. Same thing.

UT2k3 does use curves on some maps, like the CTF map (at all those big curved spikes around the top outside the bases) and the valley map(the bone structures that leads to the top level of the shrine where one of the rocket launchers is) (names elude me right now) for example. The only thing is that for them to be rendered as true curves you need to be running it in GL not in Direct X.
I wonder how many people have tried running the demo in GL? It looks sooooooo sweet and performs ALOT better than Direct X with antialiasing on, even 2x, which looks really smudgy even with testure sharpening. The framerate is of course higher in DX without anti aliasing than it is in GL but has a more pixelly look (jaggies)
The character models of course dont have any curves but I think with the sweet ass job they have dont on the models and skins that and performance hit you would get from all those extra curves that having curves on the models wouldnt really add that much to the experience. The only time you are really gonna get a good close look and notice stuff like that on the models is when you're dead

Well Hi to all first of all...
I played UT99 from first minute on..so am able to tell you
my very obiective opinion about UT2003 in comparison with the legendary one.

UT1999 UT2003
Music: Good Excellent

Announcer Loved It. Some better/
Some shitty

Graphics GoodEngine/ UNREAL!!
350Mhz- but:
compatible 2003 and still NO
curves ??
EdgeOverEdge? SHAME!

Gameplay: 100% fun 100% fun /
but more aiming training

Weapons: Good balanced/ Good balanced/
Razor jack sucks ASM Shock sucks here:
Shit design and
shit 2nd firemode/
Weapons sre
better in UT99 Only
Translocator/
Rocket/
Rifle+secfire
became
cooler

WeaponSounds: Theres NotAsBrutalAsOriginal
truth but no
logic:
true sound!

Taunts: Funny/Great Absolutely
mega-keewl(demo/
beta )
exept femeile
voices.

Physiks: none-karma Reference-Class

Feeling: UNREAL more "lonely"/
AREAS s too big/
24 Player maps

Overall: >90scorefPS same but
possible not to
push his little
99-brother
from throne

There are minus-es and plus for UT2k3, well
as i remeber: UT99 was absolutely perfectly programmed and thought. For UT2003 the situation has become more difficult: things such as ADRENALINE pills, shield gun increases score, ore double jump, or wall-dodge/jump, but on the other hand,--trying to perfectionize old weapons ( ASM SHOCK/ BIO / SNIPER ) ...is very dangerous, because players of UT99 have their favorite weapon...and modifying it will decrease score .
I think...thsts the last thing i wanna say:

The perfect UT maybe something like that:

Curved Surfaces, Roundings, Old-Announcer with some NEW Announcer Taunts, In-game SAY: like where it was: in the upper left corner, not down in middle left screen ( which stupid idea ),The possibility to choose between OLD WEAPON CLASAS or the NEW one. Hmmmm and maybe some lessons at ID-soft...cant get it, 2,4 Ghz Machine and Geforce 4 Ti ..at 16 Players only 40 FPS ????? Well, take a look at UNREAL 1
300 Mhz and it still works and looks great till today...hmmmUT2003 should not be entitled like that because u need a new 2003 PC ??? !!!

Going to bed.
UT2003 will be a good game but:
some weapons suck
announcer is not the best
u need a great mashine
and if you dont train..aiming
u will be fragged away-..and i say
no game for beginners.

Kisses

One thing that I would add is that I actually think that the Hit points thing can go TOO high. Kinda like the difference between playing normal Deathmatch and hardcore mode in the origional. Hardcore was way more fun because the weapons did more dame so you could die easier. I find it a bit frustrating at times when you slam 3 direct rocket hits into someone who has 200 health and 100 armour and they hit the floor next to me and I die from the splash
I hope they add an equivalent to hardcore mode in the full version. To be honest I wouldnt mind a mode than ran even an little faster 9I am gonna get flamed for that I'm sure ) and the weapons doing more damage. I know you can speed the game up but it would be cool if there was a standar sped up game mode.

Yeah, I agree to a certain degree about the anouncer. Its not the comments that anoy me, its the voice. It does sound a little cheesy, like a gameshow anouncer, it should be a much darker, sinister voice, like the one in the origional UT. I like having the comments though, for me it furthur adds to the futuristic sport combat thing that I love about the game. I think they have done a good job of explaining things like re-spawning, saying how its new technology that regenerates you when you're at the point of death but that a side effect is that it eventually drives you crazy. Nicer tha just, "thats just the way it is ok, you respawn and can die over again, accept it" Didnt take a genius to think it up but at least they bothered.

I loved UT. I'm really lovin BF 1942. I dig UT2003's graphics and "more hit points" but I don't get the sporting mode. WTF? Why bother? Focus on the stuff that made UT great, like Assault mode! And kill that announcer please.

bring on the vehicles already

Personally, I don't mind constructive criticism. The only posts that get annoying are the "this game suxors" kind. If the game is that bad, beyond redemption, then you shouldn't waste your breath on it. Or bother the people who disagree. As for the more mundane criticism, well that's fine. That's healthy -- it breathes life into a game community. I think everybody who's ever made a mod has had some small gripe, some different vision -- why else make a mod? And I don't think you'll have anybody who thinks mods are a problem. Well, probably not. But you never know. Especially on a message board

Hmmm... as for the fresh air thing, I find the game evolutionary rather than revolutionary. It's like next years model of car. Shinier, slightly different, new, more mph, or fps,... you get the same kind of arguements about cars too when you think about it. The which is better / worse, it's a step forward / backward thing.

I really don't understand how you can say it's a breath of fresh air when it's virtually identical to UT. I do agree with you, though, about the introduction of adrenalin being a good thing.

...as to why anyone would bother to make a post when it wasn't positive: If all everyone does is rave all the time about something, it makes for rather poor conversation. I also think it tends to stifle change (after all if everything is fantastic, why change anything?)
