UT2003 Gold

After a sprinkling of false rumors yesterday, a post to the Infogrames, Inc. Forums by Epic's Mark Rein (thanks JP) has word that Unreal Tournament 2003 has gone gold as of 5:00 AM EDT this morning, and the game is expected in stores by the end of the month. He describes the contents of the three CD distribution, which will include the game and its over 35 levels, tools including Maya Personal Learning Edition from Alias|Wavefront, The Karma Authoring Tool, a mod "starter kit," the game's Linux support (which is not mentioned in the packaging), including the client and the server. He also mentions plans for future related releases such as a stand-alone server which will not require ownership of the game, the UDE (Unreal Development Environment), a customized version of Gmax, and other cool features for a bonus pack. In a later post (thanks Unreality), Mark also lists the names of the 37 maps the game will ship with.

...OR, maybe you just need to learn to think and react faster. I'm totally adjusted to the speed now and have no problems kicking butt.

He, he, he...am I the only one who played UT and turned up the speed for even more challenge?

Playing (online) B1942, TFC, UT2K3, and DoD and the moment,

Yes, I agree on some points you have here, just that you and I are somewhat old school when it comes to fps, although as I said there were plenty of cheats back then, just more now cause time has spawned many more, and because they cant win against truly good players without cheats, a for real point. I just think that if you are waiting for something better, it may be a long wait, most games now have been done over again and again, fps, rpg etc to the point that it is hard to believe that any new ideas exist out there. I mean the only reason carmack is doing Doom again is because no one wants another quake again, it is just part of the american way to capitilize on something once it is successful, like movies, they make things like lethal weapon 1,2,3 and so on, it does not mean it is a bad movie, just popular enough to make another. I dont forsee any kind of really great creativity out there except the war shooters, like dod, or cs or the online games like bf1942 which give you a host of things to do other than just shoot, and the ONLY reason those are popular at ALL is cause they give you a different kind or more realistic view with a mission to be achieved. I really liked Medal of Honor for its reality check, very nice indeed, but i am a long time fan of unreal and will always support there games unless and i mean UNLESS they do another ut, then i will quit buying there ut games, but love what they brought to the table with the fps genre, they at the time were the only one who gave the game a real depth of view appoach, like you could look and snipe half mile away, very nice for sure.

1) Destructable terrain.

No not in, not worthwhile to me.

2) Destructable environment.

There will be exploding items and such. Can do it in Uscript.

3) Environmental effects: day/night, fog, rain...

Some levels have rain, fog, or snow.

4) Adding more weapons: create new weapons or re-incarnate some of those best weapons from other games....maybe a weak gun with a secondary fixed range teleport, flame-throwers, ice weapons

Yeah, shoulda been some new weapon ideas, the current ones are kinda run of the mill.

5) Player choices that can impact the game: armor that slows you down, encumberance for carrying massive loads of weapons/ammo.

This will happen in single player.

6) Different shielding systems : maybe something that protects against high energy, another protects against mechanical etc...but only one can be used at a time.

One shield ins enough IMO.

7) More items that you can pick up that can impact the play. Again, perhaps inspiration from other games can be sought....

Not in this type of game, supposed to be sport like, and that would make the playing field not level.

I think a lot of the cooler stuff will be in the final game.

Too bad the motherfuckers sold out to the CPL, and made the game gold before they fixed a lot of the problems! I would rather see the problems fixed than have crap like what you're mentioning in the game!

Yep, there's a load of ideas out there already about mods to change the gameplay a lot. That's great! You'll most likely want to learn some UScript though since there are so many ideas as opposed to UScript wizards heheh.

RF added a lot of depth with destroyable terrain, I would have also liked to see that included. However this would require heavy modification of the actual engine and I'm sure just plain impossible through UScript.

Sounds like you need to find a mod team Sharpei Diem. 5-7 sound feasible. BTW, I just won a match in Antalus (? sp -- the outdoor dm level) with the much maligned lightning gun. Last two kills came with it as head shots. It is not as "good" as the old sniper rifle, but with practice it gets better. I don't miss the old sniper rifle much (although I was quite good with it) anyway -- I prefer to mix it up. Anyway, if you have time to scope in, and with the player speed that can be difficult, it seems to work well. Should be all right on larger maps.

*edit* BTW I like the player choice / encumbrance idea. It allows the player to select his advantages / disadvatages (armor vs. speed, ammo loadout vs. speed, etc.) without the artificial restrictions of a class based system. One add on -- an endurance system (with a meter for the player to see), so that players move slower as they tire / load up and perhaps some shake in the aim as well. That would certainly make for a different experience than regular UT2k3.

I was wondering what could have been added to the game to increase my enjoyment of it(keep in mind, having not seen the final product, maybe one or two of these are there...):

1) Destructable terrain. Probably the best feature of Red Faction, this would have blown me away. Just imagine the tactical possibilities....Knocking bridges down, collapsing a roof over someone, digging a hole, or carving a sniping platform. I'm wondering if the multiplayer limitations prevented this...

2) Destructable environment. Ok, if you can't blow holes in the terrain, ripping apart vehicles, trash containers, trees, etc would have been wildly entertaining

3) Environmental effects: day/night, fog, rain...(imagine firing a rocket cluster into water and produces a localized fog effect or a missed bio-round turning the terrain into a sludge which slows the opponent)

4) Adding more weapons: create new weapons or re-incarnate some of those best weapons from other games....maybe a weak gun with a secondary fixed range teleport, flame-throwers, ice weapons(what was that gun called from duke that froze people)...maybe classify weapons into groups: high energy, mechanichal, laser, etc and allow a player to only carry one of each group.

5) Player choices that can impact the game: armor that slows you down, encumberance for carrying massive loads of weapons/ammo.

6) Different shielding systems : maybe something that protects against high energy, another protects against mechanical etc...but only one can be used at a time.

7) More items that you can pick up that can impact the play. Again, perhaps inspiration from other games can be sought....like holograms, rear view camera(pick it up and a miniscreen opens in the corner showing u what's behind), jetpack, displacer, hovering autoturret, computer assisted target identification(see targets easier, maybe their health/armor)

Any other ideas?

I thought it was fast too, but again, that's the nature of evolution...and agree with the post that you can turn down the speed if you prefer(or look for the servers that do, Anyone know if this is displayed in the server id before connecting?)

I agree that sometimes the game can look a bit like Benny Hill on crack... but for the UT old-timers, try turning the speed down to 75%, make the game a LOT more enjoyable in my opinion.

Unfortunatly, this really only applies to people who are running servers, playing on a LAN or just enjoying botmatch.

But give it a try, you'll probably enjoy it a LOT more.

You know you can adjust the speed of the game hence the players speed of running, host a game and you can place commands for game speed to slow it down for the wimps.

The game rocks period!

Hey, don't think that there won't be suits in the future that help people perform amazing feats. The army has ordered such a suit from some uber secret scientists =)

Also, don't forget cybernetic implants...

Part of the coolness of sci-fi is realistic type stuffs, like you mentioned. But the other cool part about sci-fi is that it has no rules, no borders, no boundries. Sci-Fi is whatever your brain makes up. And granted, some of it is stupid (Star Trek), but some of it is also very very good (BladeRunner, Terminator, Predator, The Matrix, 12 Monkeys, Mystery Science Theater 3000, books by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournell, Jack Vance, Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Orson Scott Card). Thank heaven Sci-Fi isn't bound by the limits that YOU set for it. If it were, we would've missed out on a lot of cool stuff.

I'm glad i'm not the only person who thinks the player speed is moronic. I had plenty of other gripes about this kiddie-game, but left that one out for some reason.

#115: "...you won't be playing this one for long."

Yeah, just two or three years I liked UT and Quake III. I still play both. I like what I've seen of this one too. If you are bored / don't like it... go away and play what you like. And post about that game. Why argue about this one -- do you think you are going to make converts? Constructive criticism and comment is one thing, the "it's just STUPID" bit just means you are wasting time on something you obviously don't like. Now that's a strange way to spend you're leisure time...

And so is this game.

Part of the fun in games is to make them realistic like good science fiction, where you can suspend your disbelief and really get into the game. That's what makes a good game great.

With the pace at this speed, there is no possible reality. People can't run 50 mph. It's just STUPID!

Add to this that the game is not very much different from the original and you find a game that leaves you flat. Like old pop in the fridge, you won't be playing this one for long.
