UT2003 Gold

After a sprinkling of false rumors yesterday, a post to the Infogrames, Inc. Forums by Epic's Mark Rein (thanks JP) has word that Unreal Tournament 2003 has gone gold as of 5:00 AM EDT this morning, and the game is expected in stores by the end of the month. He describes the contents of the three CD distribution, which will include the game and its over 35 levels, tools including Maya Personal Learning Edition from Alias|Wavefront, The Karma Authoring Tool, a mod "starter kit," the game's Linux support (which is not mentioned in the packaging), including the client and the server. He also mentions plans for future related releases such as a stand-alone server which will not require ownership of the game, the UDE (Unreal Development Environment), a customized version of Gmax, and other cool features for a bonus pack. In a later post (thanks Unreality), Mark also lists the names of the 37 maps the game will ship with.

Maybe its time to speed up shooters' pace. Maybe thats why this game is faster than my ferrari. The first step in the generation of gaming was the 3D Accelerator. Even then everyone was skeptical about it. Opinions flamed and people were at each others throats. Now eveyone has one. And are still at each others throats about which is better. Perhaps this is the next step. Speeding up the gameplay. I bet by 2005 almost all shooters (ie. Quake 4, UT2K5) will be this pace or maybe faster. I used to think counter-strike was too fast. Now its a perfect pace. This is the next step. The next one after will be a Virtual Reality suit that you strap to every part of your body and are attached to a tread-mill type contraption and become UT2K3.

I personally think that UK2k3s gameplay is a breath of fresh air. I think that it has truely captured the spirit of "Sport Combat". Anyone who has spent any time online playing against REALLY good players will know that it hasnt been made that much easier on the n00bs. I am pretty damn sharp and usually paste most of the players on servers, but then theres always the times that one REALLY good player comes on and NO-ONE can touch them. 40 kills 0 deaths and the rounds over in 5 minutes. As far as spam weapons like the Flak cannon, if you pay attention to the spread on it you will notice that it spread out over a much smaller area than it did in UT, bounces much more predicably and evenly and requires more aim. Sure n00bs are gonna get a few kills here and there, thats luck and chaos factor. But no matter what weapon they have they cant hit you if you arent where they're aiming. It doesnt take long to notice the pattern in someones spam firing and predict it.
The new movements like the wall jumps and double jumps make for some really intense firefights and its great to end up in an area with another really good player and be bouncing around each other off walls etc while you dodge each others fire.
Also with the addition of the adrenaline feature at least it means that people cant just cycle powerups, they have to earn them with kills, it takes ages to get 100 adrenaline just picking up the pills. I am sure we all know that friend who just cycles the invisibility EVERY SINGLE ROUND that its on.
Fair enough if UT2k3 isnt your kind of game. I play CS alot aswell but I personally havent had this much fun since I first played Qtest. I think that people are trying to take it too seriously. Its not Counterstrike. This game is about fantasy not reality and its not meant to feature realistic apearing characters. Its meant to be a world that doesnt exist or maybe a world that doesnt exist yet. Open your mind a little and you might enjoy all the games you play more. People have been talking about how they dont like this kind of game and prefer realism FPS's becuase they have "grown up". Why is everyone in such a hurry to grow up. The successfull conclusion of growing up is death. I dont see why people who dont like this game are dissing it so much, isnt that a waste of your time? If you dont like a game then why do you bother giving it your attention? Shouldnt you be posting possitive things to threads about games you DO like?
Cant wait for the full version, I'm getting sick of cycling the same 2 maps and everyone I kill looks the same

I'm not interested in how they market the game. My only interest is in whether or not I enjoy it. I do. I've played and enjoyed fast shooters before (Doom etc.) and slower tactical shooters (Ghost Recon etc.). I take each game on it's own merits and judge it by the "fun factor". They are games afterall.

You don't like the "vanilla" UT2k3? Fine by me. Age has nothing to do with it anyway -- I'm 43. Somehow I doubt I got caught up in the "MTV" style marketing. I have no doubt this game will spawn mods galore, especially since it comes with all the tools necessary. Some of those are bound to offer the type of gameplay you enjoy. And that is the whole point of playing a game, isn't it?

As for "What's next?", who knows? Either way, if they screw up or push a good one out the door, the sales will let them know it. And their next game will build on the feed back from that.

Given I'm currently playing through the original NOLF game for the third time I doubt I'm going to uninstall the sequel after one play.

And yes, if these are brand new games then it is nice to know they run well on our hardware, rather than us having to wait to buy next gen gear just to play the game *cough*Doom3*cough*.

Um... what else...

Oh, Rock Climber - cartoony? UT2k3? UT was kinda cartoony in it's colourful nature but they seem to have toned this one down quite a bit, huh? Besides, I always thoughts Q3A was more guilty of being cartoony. I mean, look at the weapons Q3A had... half of them looked like kitchen appliances. Anyway. I agree that saying you're too old to enjoy a game is a bit dumb but... if it's been playtested and this is the speed people like then maybe it's the speed the game buying public will like. Maybe not you but... from a marketing point of view you're 1 in a 100 or thereabouts.

Well, from my point of view, this is totally marketed in a way that you guys will think "this is the newest, coolest stuff, look how fast you move!!!"

Well, I don't buy it. Contrary to popular belief, I am not here to bash the game, I am here to talk to other gamers about my opinion of it. I could have just broke into a slew of insults like many people do, but that was not my intent. I just wanted to discuss why I might not like the game, and get some other opinions. So far the best counter opinion anyone has come up with is "you are just too old for this game" which is exactly the kind of marketing crap that sells games like this. It's the classic "MTV Generation" crap you always fall for.

So, for those of you who think I am "to old", I say fine. Enjoy this turbo-speed, candybar, market-hyped, cartoony game, and I will just wait for a mod for it that rewards the sort of gameplay I enjoy (the kind where you have to aim, and players can't simply run away at insane speeds).

What's next? After you all adjust to the speed of this should they speed it up even more in the next version? Will that make you want UnrealTournament 3? Shit, you guys are an easy sell. No wonder they made it this way.

He cut the possum's face off then cut around the eye socket. In the center of the belt buckle, where the possum's eye would be, he has placed a small piece of wood from his old '52 Ford's home made railroad tie bumper. Damn, he misses that truck.

I have to agree with this post 100%. Things change. I am one of those old "skewl" gamers. I go back to the days of the commodore 64 and playing Pac Man on it. Imagine my excitement when Wolfenstein3D first came out. I am still a FPS enthusiast after all these years. Because, that gaming genre offers me the most fun for my gaminig bucks. Frankly, I don't give a rat's rear end if I'm better than you are, or if you are better than I am. I play because, I like to. Its that simple. I love the new graphics engines they keep coming up with. And I love them for the fast, furious, "eye candy" way the display the 3d action. I agree that Q2 was one of the best balanced games to come out of Id. But, I am looking forward with great anticipation to DOOM III (even though I'm sure I bought, and played a game from Id called "Final Doom" a few years ago). Why? Because Id will, once again, up the ante for this type of gaming experience.
If you are a real "hard core" gamer, I'd think you'd want as much of this kind of gaming out there as possible. To me, its all good (Well, ok, Gore sucked). And keep em coming! And I don't care whether there are "trolls" posting, or anon posting. I am capable of ignoring posts that look like they were posted by nihilistic kiddies interested in getting a rise out of people. And what is all this crap about BF1942?!? Who cares? This thread is about UT2k3. If we are interested in talking about, yet another WWII FPS/RTS/tactical ops game, I'm sure Blue will start a thread on that game too and then all you lovers of the game can rip all other games in that thread. Just leave us UTers alone please. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it

-Mission: One of the statements I saw from the publishers is that you would need the latest release of DirectX to run UT2k3. That would be DirectX 8.1a, which is released via the SP1 upgrade for XP, but can be downloaded separately for Win2k. I am running XP Pro at home, but have not downloaded the SP1 service pack from MS (due to it's large size and the number of changes it makes to the O/S, it would be a 2-3 hour download via dial-up), and the game plays fine on my rig. But, that is under OGL.

You know what's funny? All the people who hated Quake 3 because there was "nothing new" are now making the same complaints about the series that was "so much better." There's just no pleasing you people, is there?

Dumbest thing in UT/UT2K3: the stupid double-tap strafe button side-jumping thing. How the hell do you turn that lamest of lame features off? I don't know about all the other FPS babies, but I learned how to jump from side to side without this "feature" a long time ago. Is there any way to turn that stupid thing off? It keeps getting me killed.

I think this game is fun. I havent seen any problems with the physics really, and It's fast sure, but the models are big and spaces wide so I guess you will have to adjust. Really, I found my shot to hit ratio with sniper rifle better than the Q3 rail so I guess thats good. I think when you all get the retail and there are lots of maps, with maps coming out soon afterwards by the buttload, you will be happy. That and a dozen different player models will spice things up.

One of the things I enjoyed most about Q2/Q3 was custom maps. In a year there will be hundreds of great maps and some new great mods, so give it time. It certainly appears they are off to a better start than Q3, which, IMO, underperformed. But oh well, time will only tell. Like I said guys, if y ou cant just enjoy it, then maybe you are a ilttle too much into video games, or at least this genre, and need to diversify.

I’m a Troll Rock Climber? LOL. No, if I was a Troll than I would be constantly returning to the thread of a demo release and reiterating how I think it blows (and doing it in such a fashion that I’m belittling those that like it) and telling everyone, and not just on this thread but pretty much any thread I post on, on how great I am! Mind you I would remind them that I am not saying, “I’m the best”, hell no, but I am nonetheless great!

It’s not that I’m offended by your opinion of the game, I myself think it’s alright but could still use some work, it’s just that your conceited, self centered, smug posts turn my stomach.
But wait… Asmodeos has a point. We shouldn’t spend this time making enemies. So my apologies if I’ve offended you.

Regards,
Brick

I was so hyped about the game but when the DEMO came out, I was severly dissapointed. It was totally not what I expected. I was hoping for some new and innovating weapons but instead it was the same old thing with a new look (minus the rifle/grenade launcher and lightning gun). When I got into a game only with 8 other people, it was like a bad game of pin ball at the ol' arcade. People were running at the speed of sound. Everyone was everywhere and I couldn't even keep up to the pace of the game at all. I do admit I can be a slow gamer sometimes but this is too much, I dont want to be sweating when Im playing a game and have to have my little sister wipe the sweat off my head with a towel every 20 seconds. If I wanted a game this fast, I'll go play F1 2002. The cars are a bit slower and easyer to control than UT2003's players. The Graphics were a little less than what I expected, but the game play was too different. Although I really really enjoyed bombing run so I may buy the game for that. But this game doesnt compare to games like BF1942 or F1 2002 in my books. Or Mafia either.
I'll give it another chance when retail hits, but Im definately going to buy Unreal Championship on XBOX.
