UT2003 Gold

After a sprinkling of false rumors yesterday, a post to the Infogrames, Inc. Forums by Epic's Mark Rein (thanks JP) has word that Unreal Tournament 2003 has gone gold as of 5:00 AM EDT this morning, and the game is expected in stores by the end of the month. He describes the contents of the three CD distribution, which will include the game and its over 35 levels, tools including Maya Personal Learning Edition from Alias|Wavefront, The Karma Authoring Tool, a mod "starter kit," the game's Linux support (which is not mentioned in the packaging), including the client and the server. He also mentions plans for future related releases such as a stand-alone server which will not require ownership of the game, the UDE (Unreal Development Environment), a customized version of Gmax, and other cool features for a bonus pack. In a later post (thanks Unreality), Mark also lists the names of the 37 maps the game will ship with.

Oh.. sorry.. I should have been more clear: 3 CDs is the problem. Not using a single DVD-Rom is the problem. And uhh.. a "Play CD" eh? Sure pal. Why does the game require 3GB of hard disk space then?

An "Install CD" that you use once. A "Play CD" that you leave in the drive. And an "Extras CD" if you want to install Maya or the Editor. SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM ?

Come on... people have DVD-ROMs these days. Start using them! Every current console uses some form of high capacity disc format, it's about time the PC caught up. Remember the old days when you could get games on 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" diskettes? At least give people the option to pick up a DVD-ROM rather than the Deck Of Discs that I'm sure is going to become more common as games continue to grow in size.

...for a little more solid netcode than what we got in the demo. The demo seems completely intolerable of even a little bit of packet loss - instead of gracefully recovering, your character keeps popping back to where he was a few seconds ago. It's extremely frustrating, especially given the huge number of people running servers with poor upstream (*cough* cable modems *cough*) that are bound to drop some packets.

How about waiting until you actually try the full version of the game before whining about how many bugs it might have?

Sweet f**king Christ - it's finished. Having recently worked for over a year with Atari/Infogrames I can say this'll be a huge relief to them AND us

Bizarrely, the demo runs like a dream on my machine with everything turned to highest level and @ 1024x768@32-bit on:

P3 800Mhz
256Mb SDRAM
ATi Radeon 7200 DDR

I'm still reeling in shock at not having to purchase a whole new system!

Congrats Epic, Atari, NVidia et al - good luck with the sales. Bring on the fragging.

The fact that you have an issue with the game (or not, if OGL works) doesn't mean the whole world has that problem. While the demo had bugs and the final will certainly have them, I didn't get the impression that the game was overly buggy, quite to the contrary in fact. Of course, that impression might be wrong, it's hard to say either way for sure.

Normally I have not been the one in this situation, but considering the amount of crashes people are experiencing with the Demo, isn't it a bit premature to release this game?

I mean really, I am using a new 4200 Ti video card by Nvidia who placed an Ad screen on the game, using the drivers recommended by Epic, and yet the game still won't play for more than a few seconds in Direct3D, the graphics mode recommended by Epic.

I love OpenGL, and the game plays well in that renderer, but really, doesn't the D3D crashing justify holding out just a little longer when we have waited so long already?

Wooo! Now I have, what, 10 days before "the end of the month"? I need a new computer by then!

Still haven't tried the demo, not that that would have any influence on my future purchase / non-purchase of the game... original UT was so slick.
