UT2003 Gold

After a sprinkling of false rumors yesterday, a post to the Infogrames, Inc. Forums by Epic's Mark Rein (thanks JP) has word that Unreal Tournament 2003 has gone gold as of 5:00 AM EDT this morning, and the game is expected in stores by the end of the month. He describes the contents of the three CD distribution, which will include the game and its over 35 levels, tools including Maya Personal Learning Edition from Alias|Wavefront, The Karma Authoring Tool, a mod "starter kit," the game's Linux support (which is not mentioned in the packaging), including the client and the server. He also mentions plans for future related releases such as a stand-alone server which will not require ownership of the game, the UDE (Unreal Development Environment), a customized version of Gmax, and other cool features for a bonus pack. In a later post (thanks Unreality), Mark also lists the names of the 37 maps the game will ship with.

They rushed the game out the door in order to make the October 7th date the CPL gave them to have the game used in winter competition!

There are a ton of things that need to be addressed with this game, no way they got to a small percentage of them in ONE WEEK!

This is terrible, might have to wait until the second or third patch to get a COMPLETE game, and hell by then people will be used to playing it in it's current untweaked state and players will reject logical changes that need to be made.

no reason to rush this out.... christmas is FAR away, they just gave us the demo.... what would be the need to rush it out the door and axe features that were heavily ADVERTISED... the electrical fields are shown on the front page of the official site.

YEA!!! This is me doing the happy dance. Now im humping the air in front of my pc. DON'T STOP, GET IT GET IT! Man, I can really kick ass at this game when I have the energy. I won 4 15 player matches the other day. This is one reason DM will never die. Personal Glory! Love it. People were telling me how much they hated me, it's good to be admired like that. And i'll see you all on the battle field. You know my name, and you know the game.

Yep. Not ready, so they axed them to get the product out the door. We'll see them again in the first bonus pack.

Uhmm...why the hell would you need to have a DVD burner to
own a DVD drive?

Yeah, I know, I know. I just don't want to spend money on a player when if I wait I can get a great combo. I have a TV and DVD player for watching movies. I have no desire to watch a movie on my monitor when I can watch it on my 52" ws.

Unlike some people around here, when it comes to software/hardware I don't own one of everything

I think the Baldurs Gate DVD edition was done later and incorporated "The Sword Coast" expansion. I'd not bet my nads on it, but I'm pretty sure it's what I had.

Can't be sure if it's your problem, but my friend (and a number of reviews I read) has had a nightmare with that motherboard - VIA is especially known to have 'issues'.

My comp still locks up requiring a hard reset after no more than 10 minutes of play every time I try the demo. This after the patch too.

Its not very encouraging if the game has already gone gold and I'm still crashing. I wont be picking this up for at least a few months, when I read about updates that fix crashes on.

-Windows 2000 (sp3 installed)
-DirectX 8.1
-Athlon Tbird 1.33
-Via KT133A with Via 4in1 (4.37)
-GeForce 3 with 21.83 drivers (I know they're older)
-SB Audigy Gamer with updated drivers (software sound in-game)

I think the biggest drawback for the moment of DVD-Rom
penetration is the lack of being able to play MPEG2 at
decent speeds without, I'd guess, paying thousands upon
thousands of dollars for a software license. Once that's
available I'm sure we'll see an influx of games using DVDs.

I won't buy one until I can get a burner that won't become obsolete due to a competing standard. Once that happens I'll jump on the band wagon.

i just checked out the ut2003 offical forums and they sure did axe alot of planned features:

They take out swimmable water.
Change December drastically.
Change the Awsome ion cannon effect.
Took out Lavagiant 2.
Took out Electric Fields.
took away Female Announcer.
Now no Rain.

The electronic fields were heavily p1mped in many videos and used as graphics on many sites. It seems quite stupid to take this feature out.

any ideas?

Ojam I really can't say how well it sold, or if it was even sold in stores however.

It was sold in stores; at least, I saw it in one up here - I only presume they managed to sell it.

Ray Was that DVD release on the original launch/ship day or something that they did later, down the road?

Down the road, I think; I seem to recall it included an expansion or something.

I was just too unimpressed with the demo. I was really excited about it for awhile, but when it came out it just wasn't any fun. I can't tell the teams apart, can't tell some of the weapons apart, can't figure out the maps. I just couldn't seem to have any fun with it. So I'm holding out. I'll keep trying the demo, maybe it just takes getting used to.

Was that DVD release on the original launch/ship day or something that they did later, down the road? The few DVD released that I have seen have all been after the fact (like Myst), sometimes as a collection of games.

Off to hit CompUSA,

Well, look at the movie DVD industry. You think it caught
on because people decided to blow a few hundred bucks on
the initial DVD players? No...

It caught on because it started out saturating the market
and only got worse from there. The DVD section at Block-
buster was originally 2 shelving units. Now, it has been
expanded to more than half the store. And I went to the
local Fry's Electronics a couple weeks ago(by local I mean
40 miles from a major city ~,~)...One shelf o'VHS for
relatively obscure titles, and about 15 LONG isles full
of DVDs.
