UT2003 Gold

After a sprinkling of false rumors yesterday, a post to the Infogrames, Inc. Forums by Epic's Mark Rein (thanks JP) has word that Unreal Tournament 2003 has gone gold as of 5:00 AM EDT this morning, and the game is expected in stores by the end of the month. He describes the contents of the three CD distribution, which will include the game and its over 35 levels, tools including Maya Personal Learning Edition from Alias|Wavefront, The Karma Authoring Tool, a mod "starter kit," the game's Linux support (which is not mentioned in the packaging), including the client and the server. He also mentions plans for future related releases such as a stand-alone server which will not require ownership of the game, the UDE (Unreal Development Environment), a customized version of Gmax, and other cool features for a bonus pack. In a later post (thanks Unreality), Mark also lists the names of the 37 maps the game will ship with.

BF1942 sucks as bad or worse than this game. FPS games have gone to hell these days. The game companies have dumbed them all down and nerfed the weapons so they can sell more copies. Meanwhile, people like myself who can remember how much skill it used to take to be good at these games (quake1/2) are left with a half-dead feeling while playing these new games. They just dont get us stoked. I'm pretty much out of the gaming scene until something worthwhile comes out.

BF1942 CREATORS: Go buy a copy of Tribes 2 and see how smooth a huge outdoor game with vehicles can be. Great concept, but shitty execution.

UT2K3 CREATORS: Thanks but no thanks. I was stoked about this game up until recently. It's just too cartooney and too spammy for me. I'm sure many of you gamers that have only been around the last 2-3 years will like it, but many hardcore gamers think it's weak.

No offense meant to any of you. I just think the quality is going downhill instead of getting better. I already regret buying BF1942 and I've only had it a week.

Yay.

Another cartooned-out video game with nurfed weapons.

What do us skilled players play?

I think you accidently meant to say "rejoice" instead of "accept". Because I've already accepted it. I just don't agree with it.

It's ok, I forgive your error.

But, you seem so annoyed by the whole removal of anonymous posting that it is almost like you want to prove it wrong or a bad move.

Ultimately, it will come down to a matter of opinion. In my eyes, things have definitely improved. Has it been a profound, earth-shattering change? No. Are there people who register solely to be trolls? Yes. Has registration lost some of the respect that I previously gave it? Yes. Still, it does seem like the added effort to post (or just the increased ability to identify certain types of comments with certai people) has helped weed out some of the more unscrupulous posters.

There will always be jerks, but even that is easier for me to deal with now; I have an easier time identifying "Mark" from "Joe" than 12987 from 19287.

No matter what, it is frustrating to know that some people post, especially with the added registration requirement, solely to be jerks, but there is only so much we can do about that. <shrugging>

Hoping Devster was not directing the comment directly at me :|,

For the love of God, man, when are you going to accept that anon is gone? Get over it!

I haven't heard so much whining since the 2000 election.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not an asshole. SO, even though I gave the demo flak... I will wait to see how the reviews come along... hell the demo could just suck! It wouldn't be the first time! And I am a huge fan of the original UT... so why not?

I can't tell the teams apart
I'm thinking it's time to trade in that monochrome monitor for one of those newfangled VGA models

can't figure out the maps
Maps just take practice. I think the demo maps are quite good and pretty straightforward. Play on them for a little while and you'll learn how the battles flow on each.

I just couldn't seem to have any fun with it. So I'm holding out. I'll keep trying the demo, maybe it just takes getting used to.

I think it does. While it's still very much UT, it does have its quirks and it will take some getting used to. I've been playing the demo since it was released (mostly on instagib servers if I can manage to get a spot on one) and I love it now.

Well I have to respectfully disagree -- the signal to noise ratio in this thread is infinity better than it was prior to eliminating the anon posting. No contest.
Well, although I'm sure you read these threads as much as I do, it being your site and all :), I just don't really see much of a difference aside from the trolls having names now. Probably several names apiece even. I do hope you don't go do something silly like adding in the option to ignore certain users. If "hide anons" didn't make people happy, then ignore won't either since it will have the same ultimate effect, yet take more work by each user. I really don't see a solution, unless you're a whiz enough coder to whip up an "Ignore every post that I won't like" button.

Wooops. Once again, we fail to understand that technology will never solve social problems.
I wasn't trying to solve a problem, just hide it.

Anyways. UT2003 looks good, sounds good, and I guess 3 CDs (instead of 1 DVD) will give the appearance of more filling, especially in one of the new boxes - be nice and weighty (if they give it a proper case).

I was also saying from the start that banning anons wasn't gonna help.

We used to have that. It was called "hide anonymous posters".

Well, you beat me to it But yeah, I was also saying from the start that banning anons wasn't gonna help. But does anybody listen? Of course not. Now we have trolls with names. Still no way to prevent them from posting. Ignoring specific users will cause the same problems that everyone bitched about with the "hide anons" feature. Even sites like Slashdot and Kuro5hin that have pretty robust rating systems and such can't prevent trolls from posting. Not to mention the fact that one man's "-1 Troll" is another man's "+1 Insightful".

at first, i would agree with you. i was a little upset and dissappointed by the unreal demo. i, like many others, got my greedy hands on one of the prerelease builds floating around.

now, after plenty of more time with unreal and battlefield, i think unreal takes the cake. its my opinion, so why should you care? i dunno, i feel like talking, rather than spying on this site for more than a few years.

unreal has the netcode.
battlefield has the massive levels.
unreal does combat.
battlefield struggles in combat situations. its terrible.

unreal looks awesome.
battlefield looks awesome.

even though battlefield is fresh and new, with all those badass things to do, i believe unreal is a better fighter.

just my thoughts. i wasn't expecting for it to gold so soon, but hot damn! im ready for this game.

cya on the demo servers.

It has been really hard for me to comprehend what you are saying in all the posts you make.

Is it that...do you mean...are you saying that you don't like UT2K3 and prefer B1942 instead?

I never knew.

UT2K3 is kewl looking, has some nice graphics and such, but it's simply not advanced enough to peak my interest. I've had the full version of it for a while and I've also played U2. I can say without a doubt that U2 blows away UT2K3.

To me UT2K3 is simply UT that has curved surfaces and the same nasty netcode UT had. I joined up on a server the other day and everyone was a freaking bunny. Hoping all over the level. Plus they took out 20% of the features that were supposed to be in the game.

I don't like UT2K3 and I doubt it will be anywhere as popular as Battlefield 1942.

Now if you want to talk about a game talk about B1942. So much content, so many things to do and way to much fun for one person to have in a day! All of you thinking of getting UT2K3 do yourself a favor and grab B1942 first.

Anyone out there that has played the full leaked version of UT2K3 and B1942 retail which would you keep if you had to choose one? Which would you like to have first?

UT2K3 gets old to fast and it simply doesn't offer up enough new things.... Epic needs to go back and redo it all like ID did with the upcoming Doom3.
