Blizzard Countdown

The countdown is underway on the Blizzard Entertainment Website (thanks Hanzo) where they started the clock ticking yesterday for their promised big announcement (story). Meanwhile, the mailbag here at the Blue Tower has been filling up with entries from folks excited to see the same countdown on www.starcraft2.com (thanks StarmiT) which would seem to be an indicator of what today's announcement from the Tokyo Game Show will center around. Just to clarify, while the announcement may well indeed be about plans for a StarCraft sequel to satisfy those eager for such a project, the countdown actually appears on other domains Blizzard owns currently pointed at the same server, so you will also see this dramatic countdown (at 7-some odd hours as of this writing) on warcraft.com, as well, so there's no reason to be certain the announcement relates to StarCraft.

Yeah, except that starcraft2.com was registered by Vivendi Universal:

Mr. Roper (three is comapny too...) has already stated it's not SC2.
WC3 just came out and WoW is under construction, so it won't be anything WC related.
Diablo 3? Nah, not yet.
I have a feeling it'll be somthing brand spankin' new.
It'd be cool if they did an update of Syndicate by Bullfrog, or some post apocalypse Fallout type game.
Doubtful, but a man can dream, can't he?

"IM HERE SOMEBODY CALL FOR AN EXTERMINATOR CALL THE SHOT IM ALL OVER IT NEVER KNOW WHAT HIT EM IM ABOUT TO OVERLOAD MY AGGRESSION INHIBITORS"

Obviously Starcraft something. And since they stated it's not Starcraft 2, and those things sound pretty Duke-y, it's obviously a Starcraft FPS. Probably a bit like the C&C FPS.

Now we can just wait for the screens.

Rumor is it's an MGS style game set in the StarCraft universe. Given the clues from the countdown, the main character would be a Ghost (as seen in StarCraft).

If it has anything to do with the StarCraft world, my first choice would be another RTS. But if not that, a squad-based FPS would be pretty cool.

I see it now....

It's like Alien Vs. Predator. You play as Raynor sent to the Zerg planet to take down Kerrigan. This being a FPS makes it totally different.

Of course, this would sadden me immensely. I loved StarCraft and would hope they extend rather than revolutionsise it. Hell, same as last time, take WarCraft and change the story and number of races. I'm easy%)

Forget Syndicate, we got enough mob with GTAIII, forget Post Apoc, you can cover that with a creative StarCraft mission....I want Blizzard SUPERHEROES, baby! Hopefully in a dystopian world like in White Wolf's Aberrant or JMS's Rising Stars Comic. My spider-sense tingles just thinking about it.

If the picture behind the countdown is any clue, it appears to be something with swords. After cranking up the gamma of the background image, it looks like a man (or biped to more exact) crouching and holding a sword.

I doubt that this announcement is of a rts in the starcraft world- it is too soon after wc3 for them to have their own new product competing with it, since they are similar in design.

I'm inclined to agree with the ghost theory. To me when I crank up the gamma it looks like that sword is actually one of the rifles that the ghosts hold.

That image behind the countdown could be a ghost- what he is holding looks like a sniper rifle to me rather than a sword- you can see the end of the scope in it as well as the clip. Perhaps an fps in the starcraft world on a console game?

I believe he is referring to metal gear solid. Whatever it turns out to be, I don't think it will suck. Blizzard games have been consistently well done due to the polish they put in them.

I agree. When was the last time that Blizzard released a bad game (that most people agreed was not good)? I don't think they ever did...

They've just released WC3, it would be illogical to announce SC2 already. Yeah they're probably working on it but they won't announce it now, not until they have released at least an expansion for WC3.

I just hope they're going to do an original game for a change. Not just another sequel.

I, for one, could not care less what the announcement is. The last Blizzard game I bought was Warcraft II and I didn't finish that because the last mission was damn near impossible.

As soon as Blizzard stops creating click-fests (all of their RTSs) and stops hindering ingame saving (Diablo series),,, I'll be back for more games.

It's a pity that the great RTS genre was abused by the likes of Blizzard, Westwood, and Ensemble. RTS should be about thinking and those 3 companies have made them glorified click-fests.

Thank god for the following with ingame pausing and save anywhere: ORB, Hegamonia, Warlord Battlecry, MechCommander2, the Total War series, etc., etc., etc.

hehe, j/k

I predict it will be a highly polished game with multiplayer support through battle.net

but then again, it might not.

I know you are just trolling and my reply will probably invoke the release of some bodily fluid, but here goes.

1) Blizzard invented RTS.

2) You don't need to save in diablo. You just save when you are done! It autosaves like every 5 min anyway in case your power goes out. How is that annoying? I feel *better* that way because I can get into the game and not worry about saving.

3) RTS stands for Real Time Strategy. You can't pause real time. If you are a fan of turn based, cool. I like both.

4) Click-fest? Hardly. Sure you have to micro manage which causes you to click a lot. It's not like a fighting game where the mouse equivalent of "button-mashing" does you any good.

It sounds to me like you just suck royal at WC3 and have to cry about it anywhere you can.
